  • In this study, micro electrochemical machining method was introduced for accomplishment the fabrication technology of functional parts and smart structures using the Ni-Ti shape memory alloy. From the experimental result, the micro part which has very fine surface could be achieved by use of micro electrochemical process with point electrode method. Concretely, the optimal performance of micro electrochemical process in Ni-Ti SMA was obtained at the condition of approximately 100% of current efficiency and high frequency pulse current. That is, much finer surface integrity and shape memory effect can be obtained at the same condition mentioned above.

  • The effects of mechanical grinding(MG) treatment on the hydrogen storage of $Mg_2Ni$ alloy and $Mg_2Ni$ composite alloy($Mg_2Ni+graphite$) were investigated by pressure-composition-temperature(PCT) measurement, the micro-electrode technique of electrochemistry and etc, in which PCT was measured at high temperature(around $300[^{\circ}C]$) of gas phase and a carbon-filament micro-electrode for electrochemical evaluation was manipulated to make electrical contact with the particle in 1M KOH aqueous solution. It was found that the hydrogenation properties of $Mg_2Ni$ and graphite composite particle were greatly improved by the mechanical grinding treatment by which the $Mg_2Ni$ and graphite composite alloys could be changed into microstructure and nano-level particles. namely; the hydrogen dissociation pressure of PCT measurement was decreased from 0.55[MPa] to 0.42[MPa] and hydrogenation peaks by micro-electrode were also observed more clearly on the same sample.

  • In this study, we investigated the deactivation characteristics of Ni-Zn-Fe electrodes due to intermittent operation in alkaline water electrolysis. To find suitable method to accelerate deactivation of electrode, the accelerated stress-test (AST) which repeated on/off step was performed with constant current/voltage control. The AST under constant voltage control is suitable to deactivate electrode so it were selected to investigate deactivation of electrode. The AST which repeated on/off step in range of -1.3 V and 0 V was performed and the relationship between oxidation current and electrode deactivation in the off step was investigate. As results, it was confirmed that the nickel and zinc on electrode surface were oxidized due to anodic current which occurred at off step.

  • The $0.3Li_2MnO_3{\cdot}0.7LiMn_{0.55}Ni_{0.30}Co_{0.15}O_2$ cathode material was prepared via a co-precipitation method. The vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) was used as a conductive material and its effects on electrochemical properties of the $0.3Li_2MnO_3{\cdot}0.7LiMn_{0.55}Ni_{0.30}Co_{0.15}O_2$ cathode material were investigated. From the XRD pattern, the typical complex layered structure was confirmed and a solid solution between $Li_2MnO_3$ and $LiMO_2$ (M = Ni, Co and Mn) was formed without any secondary phases. The VGCF was properly distributed between cathode materials and conductive sources by a FE-SEM. In voltage profiles, the electrode with VGCF showed higher discharge capacity than the pristine electrode. At a 5C rate, 146 mAh/g was obtained compared with 232 mAh/g at initial discharge in the electrode with VGCF. Furthermore, the impedance of the electrode with VGCF did not changed much around $9-10{\Omega}$ while the pristine electrode increased from 21.5${\Omega}$ to $46.3{\Omega}$ after the $30^{th}$ charge/discharge cycling.

  • Five different processes were selected and tested to find an useful method of manufacturing Fe-Ti type electrode. Initially, FeTi alloy was prepared by melting in plasma arc furnace and then powdered for shaping. Electroless Ni plating on these powder particles before shaping improved the discharge characteristics. The effects of heat-treatments on the electrode characteristics were also investigated. The discharge capacities of electrods were increased with the increasing heat-treatment temperatures. When heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ after shaping, the best results were acquired in the discharge capacity and cycle life. Both electroless Ni plating and heat-treatment were appeared to be crucial for the performance improvement of FeTi type electrode. Fe-Ti -Mn electrodes were prepared according to the process suggested in this study and tested to verify the promising effects of that.

  • During sintering of Ni-electrode multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), the Ni electrode often becomes discontinuous because of its lower sintering temperature relative to that of $BaTiO_3$. In an attempt to retard the sintering of Ni, we introduced passivation of the Ni powder. To find the optimal passivation conditions, a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted in air. After passivation at $250^{\circ}C$ for 11 h in air, a nickel oxide shell with a thickness of 4-5 nm was formed on nickel nanoparticles of 180 nm size. As anticipated, densification of the compacts of the passivated Ni/NiO core-shell powder was retarded: the starting temperature of densification increased from ${\sim}400^{\circ}C$ to ${\sim}600^{\circ}C$ in a $97N_2-3H_2$ (vol %) atmosphere. Grain growth was also retarded during sintering at temperatures of 750 and $1000^{\circ}C$. When the sintering atmosphere was changed from wet $99.93N_2-0.07H_2$ to wet $99.98N_2-0.02H_2$, the average grain size decreased at the same sintering temperature. The conductivity of the passivated powder sample sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in wet $99.93N_2-0.07H_2$ was measured to be $3.9{\times}10^4S/cm$, which is comparable with that, $4.6{\times}10^4S/cm$, of the Ni powder compact without passivation. These results demonstrate that passivation of Ni is a viable means of retarding sintering of a Ni electrode and hence improving its continuity in the fabrication of $BaTiO_3$-based multi-layer ceramic capacitors.

  • Lithium diffusivity of fluorine-free and -doped tin-nickel (Sn-Ni) film model electrodes with improved interfacial (solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)) stability has been determined, utilizing variable rate cyclic voltammetry (CV). The method for interfacial stabilization comprises fluorine-doping on the electrode together with the use of electrolyte including fluorinated ethylene carbonate (FEC) solvent and trimethyl phosphite additive. It is found that lithium diffusivity of Sn is largely dependent on the fluorine-doping on the Sn-Ni electrode and interfacial stability. Lithium diffusivity of fluorine-doped electrode is one order higher than that of fluorine-free electrode, which is ascribed to the enhanced electrical conductivity and interfacial stabilization effect.

  • The electrode resistance of semiconducting PTC BaTiO3 ceramic material was studied in some detail. Comme-rical In-Ag paste In-Ga alloy and electroless plated Ni as well as evaporated Al were chosen as electrode. The contact resistance of electroded samples were measured by both dc resistivity and ac impedance analysis. The aging effect on contact resistance under cyclic loading from -1$0^{\circ}C$ to 85$^{\circ}C$ was also monitored for the prolonged period of time. In case of Al electroded samples the heat treatment and protective coating had effects on the stability against contact resistance degradation. It was also found that the samples with commercial In-Ag paste and electroless plated Ni electrode had good properties of contact resistance against aging.

  • In the case of a metal sulfide electrode, it is used as an anode or cathode active material in a lithium battery. The reason is that the voltage exists between 0.8 and 2.0 V via lithium electrode and the discharge and charge capacity is high. In order to manufacture nickel sulfide for electrode, which are widely used, nano-nickel powder was sulfided using ammonium polysulfide, and single-phase NiS electrodes were manufactured through heat treatment. The prepared NiS electrode had a high initial capacity of 500 mAh/g or more, and was stabilized after 20 cycles to maintain a capacity of 400 mAh/g or more until 100 cycles.

  • Ni nanoparticles-$TiO_2$ nanotube arrays (Ni/$TiO_2NTs$) composites were prepared by pulsed electrodeposition method and subsequently characterized by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The FESEM results showed that highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles were not only loaded on the top of the $TiO_2NTs$ but also within the tubular structure, and the particle size of Ni prepared at different current amplitude (100, 200 and 300 $mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$) was in the range of 15 to 70 nm. The electrochemical studies indicated that Ni nanoparticles loaded on the highly ordered $TiO_2NTs$ are readily accessible for electrochemical reactions, which improve the efficiency of the Ni nanoparticles and $TiO_2NTs$. A maximum specific capacitance (27.3 $mF.cm^{-2}$) was obtained on the Ni/$TiO_2NTs$ composite electrode that prepared at a current of 200 $mA.cm^{-2}$, and the electrode also exhibited excellent electrochemical stability.
