This paper represents the first comprehensive comparison of the Newton-Raphson's method and Simple Iterative Procedure (SIP) in the maximum likelihood estimation of the two-parameter Weibull distribution. Computer simulation is employed to compare these two methods for multiply censored, singly censored data (Type I or Type Ⅱ censoring) and complete data. Results indicate the Newton-Raphson's with the Menon's estimated value, as an initial point remains the effective iterative procedure for estimating the parameters.

An effective and practical method is presented for solving the forward kinematics of a 6-DOF Stewart Platform, using neural network algorithm together with Newton-Raphson method. An approximated solution is obtained from trained neural network, then it is used as an initial estimate for Newton-Raphson method. A series of accurate solutions are calculated with reasonable speed for the entire workspace of the platform. The solution procedure can be used for driving a real-time simulation platform.

Machine learning becomes increasingly important in the big data era. Logistic regression is a type of classification in machine leaning, and has been widely used in various fields, including medicine, economics, marketing, and social sciences. Rhipe that integrates R and Hadoop environment, has not been discussed by many researchers owing to the difficulty of its installation and MapReduce implementation. In this paper, we present the MapReduce implementation of Gradient Descent algorithm and Newton-Raphson algorithm for logistic regression using Rhipe. The Newton-Raphson algorithm does not require a learning rate, while Gradient Descent algorithm needs to manually pick a learning rate. We choose the learning rate by performing the mixed procedure of grid search and binary search for processing big data efficiently. In the performance study, our Newton-Raphson algorithm outpeforms Gradient Descent algorithm in all the tested data.

A new evaluation procedure for calculating the Jacobian elliptic parameter is presented. This procedure is useful in calculating the trajectory for cnoidal wave generation. Upon specification of water depth, the wave height and either the wave period or the wavelength, the presented algorithm uses the Newton-Raphson method and the arithmetic and geometric-mean scales to calculate the profile directly, without trial and error procedures or look-up in tables. It is shown that the algorithm provides equally accurate result as the ad hoc methods previously used.
In the present research post-buckling of a cut out plate reinforced through carbon nanotubes (CNTs) resting on an elastic foundation is studied. Material characteristics of CNTs are hypothesized to be altered within thickness orientation which are calculated according to Mori-Tanaka model. For modeling the system mathematically, first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is applied and using energy procedure, the governing equations can be derived. With respect to Rayleigh-Ritz procedure as well as Newton-Raphson iterative scheme, the motion equations are solved and therefore, post-buckling behavior of structure will be tracked. Diverse parameters as well as their reactions on post-buckling paths focusing cut out measurement, CNT's volume fraction and agglomeration, dimension of plate and an elastic foundation are investigated. It is revealed that presence of a square cut out can affect negatively post-buckling behavior of structure. Moreover, adding nanocompsits in the matrix leads to enhancement of post-buckling response of system.
An ARIMA signal observed with measurement error is shown to have another ARIMA representation with nonlinear restrictions on parameters. For this model, the restricted Newton-Raphson estimator(RNRE) of the unit root is shown to have the same limiting distribution as the ordinary least squares estimator of the unit root in an AR(1) model tabulated by Dickey and Fuller (1979). The RNRE of parameters of the ARIMA(p,1,k) process and unit root tests base on the RNRE are developed.

In this paper, a non-linear finite element formulation for the spatial cable-net structures is simulated and using this formulation, the characteristics of structural behaviors for the elastic catenary cable are examined In the simulating procedure for the elastic catenary cable, nodal forces and tangential stiffness matrices are derived using catenary parameters of the exact solutions by a governing differential equation of catenary cable, cable self-weights and unstressed cable length. Dynamic Relaxation Method that considers kinetic damping is used for the structure analysis and Newton Raphson Method is used to verify the accuracy of solutions. In the analysis of two dimensional cable, the results obtain from the elastic catenary elements are shown more accurate than does of truss elements and in the case of spatial cable-net structures, Dynamic Relaxation Method is more stable to be converged than Newton Raphson Method.

Vector autoregressive process disturbed by measurement error is a vector autoregressive process with nonlineat parametric restrictions on the parameter. A Newton-Raphson procedure for estimating the parameter which take advantage of the information contained in the restrictions is proposed.

This paper presents the closing analysis of a symmetric steel cable-stayed bridge erected by a free cantilever method. Two independent structural systems are formed before the closing procedure of a bridge is performed, and thus the compatibility conditions for vertical displacement and rotational angle are not satisfied at the closing section without the application of proper sectional forces. Since, however, it is usually impossible to apply sectional forces at the closing section, the compatibility conditions should be satisfied by proper external forces that can be actually applicable to a bridge. Unstrained lengths of selected cables and the pull-up force of a derrick crane are adjusted to satisfy nonlinear compatibility conditions, which are solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Cable members are modeled by the elastic catenary cable elements, and towers and main girders are discretized by linear 3-D frame elements. The sensitivities of displacement with respect to the unstrained lengths of selected cables and the pull-up force of the derrick crane are evaluated by the direct differentiation of the equilibrium equation. A Monte-Carlo simulation approach is proposed to estimate expected construction errors for a given confidence level. The proposed method is applied to the second Jindo Grand Bridge to demonstrate its validity and effectiveness.

Buckling analysis of thin compressed beam has been carried out. Pre-buckling and post-buckling are simulated by finite element method incorporating with the incremental nonlinear theory and the Newton-Raphson solution technique. In order to find the bifurcation point, the determinent of the stiffness matrix is calculated at every iteration procedure. For post-buckling analysis, a small perturbed initial guess is given along the eigenvector direction at the bifurcation point. Nonlinear elastic buckling and elastic-plastic buckling of cantilever beam are analyzed. The buckling load and buckled shape of the two models are compared.
