  • This study explored the effects of the parasocial relationship formed by CCTV (China Central Television) TV news and non-traditional news on users' perceived media credibility and their online and offline political participation. This study conducted a survey with the Chinese CCTV users between April 19 and April 30, 2021, and finally, 701 respondents' data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The study results showed that both TV news and non-traditional news had positive effects on parasocial relationships and the parasocial relationship positively influenced media credibility, which subsequently facilitated political participation. However, there was no direct effect between media usage and media credibility. This implies the important mediating role of parasocial interactions, which enables CCTV news to gain media credibility and subsequently influence political participation. This study suggests that CCTV needs to improve the parasocial interactions between their audience and media figures by utilizing the interactive mechanism of non-traditional media.

  • Based on the secondary data of the 2018 news media audience conducted by the Korean Press Foundation, this study examines how the credibility of news on web portals and from news media outlets affects the types of web portal usage. The web portal usage was categorized into the two types: paying attention to news edited by the web portals and paying attention to news media outlets. These were named "portal site centered" and "news media outlet centered," respectively. This study found that the credibility of news from the web portals showed positive relationships with both portal site centered and news media outlet centered. The credibility of news from news media outlets had statistically significant relationships with the two types of web portal usage, but it differed depending on the audiences' preferences toward news media outlets. In other words, the credibility of news from news media outlets that are usually preferred or frequently used showed a positive relationship with the portal site centered, but has a negative relationship with the news media outlet centered. On the other hand, the credibility of news from news media outlets that are not preferred or not frequently used had a negative relationship with the portal site centered, but had a positive relationship with the news media outlet centered.

  • This study explored how Korean immigrants education, length of stay and English fluency affect their political socialization, mediated through traditional news media and the news Web use. Political socialization included political knowledge, interest, and participation. The media usage patterns included U.S. news media, U.S. news Web, Korean news Web, and Korean news Media use by Korean immigrants in the United State. This study found as follows. First, education, length of stay, and English fluency indirectly increased political socialization(political knowledge, interest, and participation) through their relationship with U.S. news media use. Second, U.S. news Web played a potentially important role in Korean immigrants' political socialization by increasing their political interest. Third, Korean news media partly contributed to Korean immigrants' political socialization by increasing their political interest. Fourth, Korean news Web use did not contribute to Korean immigrants' political socialization in terms of political knowledge, interest, and participation at all. In conclusion, this study found that traditional news media's role was more important than news Web's one in the process of immigrants' political socialization to the host society.

  • Are intentions important in deciding the outcome of an action such as sharing misinformation among social media users during the pandemic? What is their role and how far they are important for the very act of fake sharing news? The social media users' actions on the social platform are determined by what they plan to do themselves; however, their motivation has an immense role to play in the dissemination of fake news on social media. The study proposes a conceptual model for understanding how select factors affect fake news sharing motivation and intentions of social media users. The study scrutinizes the relationship between content and context, fear of missing out (FoMO), news verification and news sharing gratification on the motivation and intention of social media users of networked Asian society. Empirical Data were drawn from social media users (N = 243) from India, using an online questionnaire based on prior studies and structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used to analyze the data collected. Results indicate that news content, news verification, and news sharing gratification have a direct and positive relationship with sharing motivation. On the other hand, news context and content, FoMO and news sharing gratification have a positive significant relationship with sharing intention. Likewise, it was discovered that news verification will decrease sharing intention of the social media users. However, news context, that is the pandemic in the case of the present study and FoMO were not identified as determinant variables for sharing motivation among social media users. The research limitations and further scope were discussed.

  • This study aims to understand how people evaluate the credibility of news they use every day and how such evaluation is related to their credibility assessment of news on media overall. For this purpose, this study examines the relationship between credibility of "news I use" and credibility of news on television and news portals overall, respectively. It also explores whether the relationship is moderated by the strength of political ideology. From regression analyses of a nationwide survey of 5,010 adults in South Korea in 2021, the results showed a lower level of credibility for "news I use" than for overall news on television and portals. The results also revealed a significant relationship between the credibility of "news I use" and credibility of overall news on the two media respectively. The expected moderation effect was significant for portal news, but not for television news. Findings and implications are discussed.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the intention of using a news media platform using block chain through media company workers in a situation where various platform services using block chain are being newly released in the media industry. Therefore, in this paper, we intend to explore the development direction of the news media platform service using the block chain in the future by deriving implications through the characteristics of the block chain, user characteristics, and self-determination factors. Design/methodology/approach This study conducted a survey on the main characteristics of blockchain, user characteristics, self-determination, resistance to innovation, etc., and designed a research model by integrating factors on the continuity of intention to use the news media platform. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, in this study, it was confirmed that the intention to use the blockchain news media platform is significantly related to decentralization, which is a characteristic variable of the blockchain, perceived risk, which is a user characteristic variable, and competence and relationship, which is a self-determination variable. In addition, it was confirmed that it affects the perceived ease of use with respect to the intention to use. In addition, in this study, news writers write more careful articles as they cannot edit articles once written, which can contribute to improving the quality of news content.

  • This study investigated news comprehension via the social media by comparing the reading of a news story on the news paper. A news story on the social media was suggested to present information in a conversational form, which differs from a traditional reporting style. To compare the different forms of news information presentation, two conditions were created: in a control condition, a news story was written in a traditional reporting form. In the experimental condition, the same news story was constructed in a conversational form. Participants were assigned randomly in one of two conditions. They read the news story and afterwards, they were asked to recall firstly, the core idea of the news story, secondly the whole news story, and finally to answer to the 10 questions that assessed how well they learned from the news story. Participants' responses were content-analyzed and produced six variables, the extent to recall the core idea, the extent to recall the whole story, the extent to recall wrong information, the extent to recall additional information, the extent to recall causally related contents in general, and finally the extent to recall causally related contents in story-specific. Analyses on the six variables revealed that the group in the news paper condition recalled more core idea, the whole story, and additional information than the group in the social media. But the news paper condition recalled less of wrong information than the group in the social media condition. Additionally, the news paper condition learned more than the group in the social media. Regarding the recall of causally related contents, the general causal relationships were recalled more in the group in the social media condition but the story specific causal relationships were recalled more in the group in the news paper condition. The findings seemingly indicated that a traditional news reporting contributes to news story comprehension more than the conversational form. Authors however added discussions and advised that the findings needed to be read under caution.

In this paper, the data of 2 news media (BBC and CNN) and 2 social media (Facebook and Twitter) were collected for the three global leading Korean companies (Samsung, Hyundai Motor Company, and LG) from April, 2018 to April, 2019. The findings of this paper have shown that traditional news media and also modern social media have become devastating tools to extract global trends or phenomena for businesses. Moreover, this presents that a company can adopt a two-track strategy through two different types of media by deriving the key issues or trends from news media channels and also grasping consumers' sentiments, preference or issues of interest such as battery or design from social media. In addition, analyzing the texts of those media and understanding the association rules greatly contribute to the comparison between two different types of media channels to see the difference. Lastly, this provides meaningful and valuable data empowered insights to find a future direction comprehensively and develop a global strategy for sustainability of business.
