News credibility is on a decline for many democratic countries. Among the countries, South Korea is currently witnessing one of the steepest declining curves. Since people obtain news from various media, for example, television and portals, news credibility can be measured for each of the media separately. Most often, television news credibility is much higher than portal news credibility because people tend to trust traditional media more than online ones. To understand the discrepancy between news credibility of the two media in specific relation to South Koreans' everyday news use and overall news credibility evaluation, this exploratory study examined how the factors that influence television news credibility and portal news credibility differ from each other by examining the relations of news credibility of the two media to credibility of news I use and of news in general. Drawing from previous research on partisan news use, it assumed that normative beliefs for television as a traditional medium work for television news credibility in the similar way as the mechanisms of selective exposure and bias perception do. It also assumed that the experiences dimension of news trust works for credibility of portal news and of news in general similarly. To verify these assumptions, a regression analysis was conducted from a sample of 58,936 South Koreans collected in 2022. As assumed, results revealed a greater relation between credibility of television news and of news I use, and between credibility of portal news and of news in general respectively. The findings suggest that measurement of credibility should be revised in the way that reflects media characteristics and the differing expectations held by news users.
This study aims to understand how people evaluate the credibility of news they use every day and how such evaluation is related to their credibility assessment of news on media overall. For this purpose, this study examines the relationship between credibility of "news I use" and credibility of news on television and news portals overall, respectively. It also explores whether the relationship is moderated by the strength of political ideology. From regression analyses of a nationwide survey of 5,010 adults in South Korea in 2021, the results showed a lower level of credibility for "news I use" than for overall news on television and portals. The results also revealed a significant relationship between the credibility of "news I use" and credibility of overall news on the two media respectively. The expected moderation effect was significant for portal news, but not for television news. Findings and implications are discussed.
Purpose: This study aims to understand if heterogeneous news is evenly consumed and distributed on portals as it examines people's news use and engagement behaviors and news credibility. Focusing on the four behaviors of news use, i.e., viewing news by keyword search, viewing news from subscribed sources, viewing news from the list of most-viewed news, and reading comments, and the three behaviors of news engagement, i.e., sharing news, 'liking' or 'recommending' news, and posting comments, this study investigates the relation between each of the behaviors and portal news credibility. Research design, data and methodology: From 2022 News Audience Survey in Korea, this study conducts a regression analysis to investigate the relations between each behavior and news credibility. Results: The results show a positive relation for the former two news use behaviors and the latter two news engagement behaviors, and a negative relation for the latter two news use behaviors. Conclusions: The positive relations between active news use and engagement behaviors and portal news credibility indicate that news consumers are more likely to use and engage in attitude-consistent news rather than attitude-challenging news, implying that heterogeneous news is less likely to be consumed and distributed evenly on portals across all news users.

This study attempted to empirically analyze how the use of portal news is related with user's social credibility levels. 1100 subjects were sampled and online-surveyed. The amount of news usage and level of social credibility were measured respectively by the PNRBS(Portal News Readership Behavior Score) and SCI(Social Credibility Index) which were developed by the researcher. The results show that the relationship between scocial credibility and portal new use is not a linear but some V type. In terms of the mean score of social credibility index, non-portal news user is the highest while the light user is the lowest and the heavy user is the second highest.
Based on the secondary data of the 2018 news media audience conducted by the Korean Press Foundation, this study examines how the credibility of news on web portals and from news media outlets affects the types of web portal usage. The web portal usage was categorized into the two types: paying attention to news edited by the web portals and paying attention to news media outlets. These were named "portal site centered" and "news media outlet centered," respectively. This study found that the credibility of news from the web portals showed positive relationships with both portal site centered and news media outlet centered. The credibility of news from news media outlets had statistically significant relationships with the two types of web portal usage, but it differed depending on the audiences' preferences toward news media outlets. In other words, the credibility of news from news media outlets that are usually preferred or frequently used showed a positive relationship with the portal site centered, but has a negative relationship with the news media outlet centered. On the other hand, the credibility of news from news media outlets that are not preferred or not frequently used had a negative relationship with the portal site centered, but had a positive relationship with the news media outlet centered.
This study explored the effects of the parasocial relationship formed by CCTV (China Central Television) TV news and non-traditional news on users' perceived media credibility and their online and offline political participation. This study conducted a survey with the Chinese CCTV users between April 19 and April 30, 2021, and finally, 701 respondents' data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The study results showed that both TV news and non-traditional news had positive effects on parasocial relationships and the parasocial relationship positively influenced media credibility, which subsequently facilitated political participation. However, there was no direct effect between media usage and media credibility. This implies the important mediating role of parasocial interactions, which enables CCTV news to gain media credibility and subsequently influence political participation. This study suggests that CCTV needs to improve the parasocial interactions between their audience and media figures by utilizing the interactive mechanism of non-traditional media.
This paper investigates audience perception on news content through comparison analysis on Comprehensive Programming Channels, TV chosun, JTBC, Channel A, and Terrestrial Broadcasting 'KBS'. How sensationalism created by video news affect audiences' credibility on news and media. The results shows that Comprehensive programming channels are assessed more sensational than terrestrial broadcasters by audience. Additionally, Comprehensive programming channels are assessed to get a lower credibility than terrestrial broadcasters by audience in the analysis of news and media credibility, comprehensive programming channels and terrestrial broadcasters. As a result, comprehensive programming channels showed lower news credibility and media credibility compared to that of the terrestrial broadcasters. This means that comprehensive programming channels must do the best not only recovering credibility from audiences but also constructing position as national broadcasting media.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the humor on anchor credibility, attitude and to examine the moderating impact of news type. We showed two versions of the news broadcast: one with humor, the other without it to 222 university students and analyzed how the presence of humor affects on the anchor credibility, attitude and examined the moderating role of news type. The results demonstrate that the use of humor has a negative influence on anchor credibility, but doesn't affect anchor attitude. Regarding the moderating effect of news type, the group who watched soft news was not influenced by the presence of humor, but the group who watched hard news revealed that their anchor attitude became dramatically better with the use of humor.
The purpose of this study investigates how the audience evaluation on independency of broadcasting and news credibility of KBS and MBC affect their channel brand equity(cognition, image, loyalty, and quality). The results indicate that the audience evaluation on news credibility of KBS and MBC has stronger influence on channel brand equity than the one of independency of broadcasting. On ages, the older generation group has more positive perception on channel image and loyalty of KBS than the college student group and the college student group has more positive perception on channel cognition and quality of MBC than the older generation group. On political traits, the politically conservative groups of both KBS and MBC have more positive perception on independency of broadcasting, news credibility, and channel brand equity than the other groups. Consequently, public broadcasting systems should improve the credibility of news for securing independency of broadcasting. These systems make audience change their perception toward public broadcasting as recovering integrity of news and improving professionalism of news. Public broadcasting systems should conduct a further research to improve the management of channel brand equity by studying audiences' age and political traits.
This study surveyed the relationship between television viewers' ages and Korean broadcasting companies' credibility and viewers' political involvement and resistant behavioral intention based on total 1,026 participants(206 adolescents, 518 college students, and 302 adults) during President Park, Guen Hye's political scandal. The results indicate that there is a significant difference between ages on political involvement and resistant behavioral intention. College students shows the higher scores of political involvement and resistant behavioral intention, followed by adolescents and adults. Secondly, the higher score of credibility on KBS and MBC news, the lower scores of political involvement and resistant behavioral intention, the higher scores of credibility on SBS and JTBC news, the higher score of political involvement and resistant behavioral intention.
