  • We described two brownish freshwater Cryptomonas species, C. marssonii Skuja and C. pyrenoidifera Geitler as first records in Korea. The identification was based on light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nuclear SSU rDNA sequences analysis. Cryptomonas marssonii is characterized by its sigmoid shape with a sharply pointed and dorsally curved antapex, dorso-ventrally flattened cell, two lateral plastids without pyrenoid, and its dimension of 18-25 μm in length and 8-13 μm in width. Cryptomonas pyrenoidifera is characterized by ovoid to elliptical shape with a partially twisted or rounded antapex, dorso-ventrally biconvex cell, lateral plastids with two pyrenoids, and the dimensions of 15-22 μm in length and 10-14 μm in width. Nuclear SSU rDNA sequences between C. marssonii WCK01 from Korea and CCAC0086 from Gernmay, and between C. pyrenoidifera WCK02 from Korea and CCMP152 from Australia were identical, respectively.

  • In April 2019, a single Peristediidae juvenile (14.1 mm SL) was collected from the waters off of Jeju-do Island, Korea. DNA barcoding identified the juvenile as Peristedion liorhynchus, an unrecorded species in Korea. P. liorhynchus has eight dorsal fin spines, 22 dorsal and 19 anal fin rays, and a long third pectoral fin ray that passes through the middle of the tail at the juvenile stage. Juvenile also have large heads, extensive head spination, and serrated edges on the ocular and parietal spines. This is the first record of P. liorhynchus in Korea; therefore, we propose the new Korean name, "Nam-bang-hwang-seong-dae".

  • During the investigation of Korean indigenous fungi from Seoul, three genera-Fuscoporia, Porostereum, and Trametopsis, and four species-Fuscoporia senex, Phlebia acerina, Porostereum spadiceum, and Trametopsis cervina were found. Their morphological characteristics were examined and their identification was confirmed by molecular analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA region sequences. These fungi are new to Korea and registered here with descriptions.

  • In this review, we discuss the ways in which our understanding of the controls of nitrogen use efficiency applied to crop improvement has been increased through the development of molecular physiology studies using transgenic plants or mutants with modified capacities for nitrogen uptake, assimilation and recycling. More recently, exploiting crop genetic variability through quantitative trait loci and candidate gene detection has opened new perspectives toward the identification of key structural or regulatory elements involved in the control of nitrogen metabolism for improving crop productivity. All together these studies strongly suggest that in the near future nitrogen use efficiency can be improved both by marker-assisted selection and genetic engineering, thus having the most promise for the practical application of increasing the capacity of a wide range of economically important species to take up and utilize nitrogen more efficiently.

  • Twelve strains of Bifidobacterium spp. were isolated from the feces of healthy Korean 20∼30 years. The identification of genera from isolates were performed by the microscopic observation and fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase (F6PPK) activity which is the key enzyme to distinguish the Bifidobacterium spp. from other anaerobic bacteria. To determine the antibacterial resistance patterns, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of several antibiotics (including anti-tuberculosis agents) was determined. Five of the isolate!, showed the high degree of resistance to vancomycin. To investigate the genetic diversity between isolates and type strain of Bifidobacterium spp. from KCTC, we peformed the RAPD-fingerprinting. Using a total set of four primers, it is possible to distinguish the isolates and Bifidobacterium spp. from KCTC. Thus, Bifidobacterium strains isolated from our samples may be a new species or strains of Bifidobacteriurn genera, and have the potential as a probiotics.

  • Two marine hypotrichous ciliates, Anteholosticha petzi and Ponturostyla enigmatica, were collected from the Yellow Sea and the Korea Strait, respectively, and described using live observation and protargol-impregnated specimens. Furthermore, the nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of each was sequenced and compared to previously annotated sequences retrieved from the GenBank. Anteholosticha petzi is characterized by 3 frontal cirri (FC), 2 frontoterminal cirri (FTC), 8-12 transverse cirri (TC), 1 buccal cirrus (BC), 9-12 midventral pairs (MP), 3 bipolar dorsal kineties (DK), and 3 types of colorless cortical granules. Ponturostyla enigmatica is characterized by 8 FC, 5 ventral cirri (VC), 5-7 TC, 6-7 marginal rows (MR) on each side, 4 complete and 2-3 partial DK, and greenish cortical granules. This is the first identification and description of these 2 species, A. petzi and P. enigmatica, in South Korea.

  • A strain that produces a high level of carboxymethyl cellulase was isolated from rotten leaves. The isolated strain was revealed to be gram-negative, oxidase-positive, and catalase-negative. From the electron microscopic features, it was identified as a rod-shaped bacterium with peritrichous flagella and did not form spores. Morphological and biochemical characteristics of the strain were found to be similar to the Pseudomonas species. However, carbon utilization test showed different results. Based on the results, this new strain was identified as Pseudomonas sp. CMC-50. CMCase produced by this strain showed a strong activity in neutral and weak acidic conditions and maximum activity at $50^{\circ}C$.

  • Oidiodendron flavum KNU13-6 was isolated for the first time from field soil in Korea and identified based on the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of rDNA and morphological characteristics. Based on phylogenetic analysis of ITS and morphological characteristics, the species has not been previously reported in Korea.

  • A series of excitation spectra (7Fo→5Do transition) of Eu(Ⅲ) ion in aqueous solution ([Eu(Ⅲ)]=1.12 × 10-2 mol L-1; pH 1.0 to 7.0) were obtained under CO2 free atmosphere using a pulsed tunable dye laser system. The broad and low intensity spectra (peak maximum: 578.89 nm) showed that the trivalent ion (Eu3+) underwent a low degree of hydrolysis at pH below 6.0. Eu(Ⅲ) hydroxo complex formation seemed more significant at pH above 6.0, shown by the occurrence of intense new peak at 578.63 nm. The spectra of those solutions prepared in N2 atmosphere showed no signs of the presence of interfering carbonate species. The Eu(Ⅲ) hydroxo complex formation was not observed when complexation studies between Eu(Ⅲ) ion and weak organic acids (e.g. glutarate and diglycolate) were conducted at pH 6.0 or below.
