Diversity of Yeasts Associated with Natural Environments in Korea

  • Biodiversity af yeasts in various natural environments including soils, swamps and plants was investigated. By molecular identification methods based on the partial sequences of 265 rDNA, 69 isolates were assigned to 44 taxa including 27 known species. The remaining 17 taxa could potentially form new species. All of them were classified into Ascomycota, Hymenomycetes, Urediniomycetes and Ustilaginomycetes. Ascomycetous and ustilaginomycetous yeasts were generally isolated from flower samples, and hymenomycetous and urediniomycetous yeasts were generally isolated from soil samples. Distribution of yeast groups exhibited geographical variation. Yeast biodiversity of root sail also varied according to the associated plant species.

  • 단풍고리장님노린재속 N. hakusanensis (Yasunaga, 1991), N. roseus (Yasunaga, 1991)와 N. zhugei (Yasunaga, 1991) 3종의 국내분포를 처음으로 보고하고, 각 종의 종 동정에 필요한 사진자료와 웅성생식기 그림 및 간략한 형태정보를 기술하였다.

  • Eucephalobus oxyuroides (de Man, 1876) Steiner, 1936 belonging to the family Cephalobidae Filpijev, 1934 (Cephalobomorpha) is newly reported from South Korea. This species is distinguished from other Eucephalobus species by its pointed tail terminus, high lips and relatively longer female tail and body. From many previous studies, intraspecific variation in this species has been reported for body length, absence/presence of probolae, and number/position of papillae in the posterior region of male, posing an obstacle for identification and phylogenetic analysis. In this study, details of the morphological characters and morphometric of E. oxyuroides Korean population are described and illustrated based on optical microscopy.

First Record of Ulva pertusa Kjellman (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in the Pacific Coast of Mexico

  • Based on samplings during 2006-2007 on the intertidal zone of Playa Tampico, Eréndira and Punta Baja, Baja California, Ulva pertusa Kjellman (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) was recorded for the first time for the Pacific coast of Mexico. An alga native to Asia, U. pertusa has just recently been recorded in the southern coast of California (USA). The identification of U. pertusa was based on the observation of the morphology and reproductive characters of the collected specimens. Furthermore, the species identity was confirmed by molecular comparison between nuclearencoded ITS2 sequences of the Mexican samples and those of other Ulva species in GenBnak data. Habitat and distribution of U. pertusa along the Pacific coast of North America are also described. Considering our new report of its occurrence in Mexico, we conclude that U. pertusa is expanding its geographical distribution by trans-ocean introductions.

Six New Records of Springtails (Collembola) from North Korea

  • Six species of springtails (Collembola) are reported for the first time from North Korea: Pachyotoma takeshitai (Kinoshita, 1916), Folsomia bisetosa Gisin, 1953 and Agrenia agilis Fjellberg, 1986 of Isotomidae, Entomobrya sibirica Stach, 1963 and Willowsia buski (Lubbock, 1870) of Entomobryidae, and Ptenothrix setosa (Krausbauer, 1898) of Dicyrtomidae. The genus Pachyotoma Bagnall, 1949 is mentioned for the first time from the Korean Peninsula. In order to facilitate the identification of these species, illustrations and short diagnoses are provided and the poorly known P. takeshitai is described in detail. Ptenothrix setosa and E. sibirica link the Korean peninsular fauna with Central Asia, P. takeshitai shows the zoogeographical connection of the Korean Peninsula with the Japanese Islands and A. agilis has a trans-pacific distribution. Folsomia bisetosa is an interesting circumpolar element in the Korean fauna while W. buski is a subcosmopolitan species.

Galatheoid squat lobsters (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) from Korean waters

  • Ten species of Galatheoidea (squat lobsters), belonging to two families, were collected in the Korean exclusive economic zone: Galathea balssi Miyake and Baba, 1964, Galathea orientalis Stimpson, 1858, Galathea pubescens Stimpson, 1858, and Galathea rubromaculata Miyake and Baba, 1967 belonging to Galatheidae; Bathymunida brevirostris Yokoya, 1933, Cervimunida princeps Benedict, 1902, Munida caesura Macpherson and Baba, 1993, Munida japonica Stimpson, 1858, Munida pherusa Macpherson and Baba, 1993, and Paramunida scabra (Henderson, 1885) belonging to Munididae. The present study comprises the morphological description of these ten species, including drawings and color photographs, a brief review of their regional records, and a key for their identification. Although all species are common in Japanese waters, G. balssi, G. rubromaculata, B. brevirostris, C. princeps, M. caesura, and M. pherusa are new to Korean marine fauna.

홍조 비단풀속 식물의 실내부양에 따른 형태변화와 생식에 관하여 (Morphology and Reproduction of Some Species of Ceramium (Rhodophyta) in Culture)

  • Ceramium kindoi Yendo demonstrates a Polysiphonia type of life history without diviation in unialgal culture. However, cultures of C. paniculatum Okamura and C. aduncum Nakamura from Kangneung shows considerable phenotypic variations in laboratory. In C. paniculatum, the subulate spines disappear, the transverse cell-rows of corticating bands decrease in number, and the growing direction of corticating cells is changed during the culture. In C. aduncum, a species new to Korea, frond apices become slightly incurved in contrast to strongly rolled ones in the field, and the rows of corticating cells decrease in number and height during the culture. These results suggest that some significant taxonomic characters currently used for identification of Ceramium species are reconsidered.

Three New Records of Penicillium Species Isolated from Insect Specimens in Korea

  • Three Penicillium species have been isolated from insect specimens in Korea; Penicillium sp., P. steckii, and P. polonicum. Penicillium sp. (KNU12-3-2) was isolated from Lixus imperessiventris, while P. polonicum (KNU12-1-8) and Penicillium steckii (KNU12-2-9) were isolated from Muljarus japonicas and Meloe proscarabaeus, respectively. The identification was based on the morphological characteristics of the fungi and in internal transcribed spacer analysis. This is the first report on the isolation of these three species of Penicillium from insects in Korea.

  • Recently many studies show that genetic characters can be used to provide unambiguous taxonomic discrimination when morphological characters are not practical for routine identification to species level (Bucklin et al., 1996, 1998; Lindeque et al., 1999). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA are also one of appropriate markers for species-level studies because it contains sufficient diversity to address intra- and interspecific phylogenetic relationships in invertebrates (Odorico and Miller,1997; Schizas et al., 1999). Notes on the Earwig Family Spongiphoridae (Insecta: Dermaptera), with a New Record of Spongovostox sakaii in Korea

  • The earwig species Spongovostox sakaii Nishikawa, 2006 is reported from the Korean Peninsula for the first time. The species was originally described from Amami-Oshima, Nansei Islands, Japan, which is located in the Oriental Region. Its distribution in Korea was confirmed by collections from Gwangneung Forest, which is located in the middle of South Korea. This is also first record of the pantropical genus Spongovostox Burr, 1911a from the Palearctic Region. Along with Labia minor Linnaeus, 1758 and Paralabellula curvicauda (Motschulsky, 1863), which had been reported from Korea previously, notes on the species are provided. And a key, descriptions, photos, and illustrations are given for their identification.
