The development of diesel power generation is predominantly geared toward island areas or ships because diesel exhibits weak scale-merit characteristics and power quality problems, which are associated with environmental pollution. However, a new energy paradigm, distribution energy resource (DER), has been emerging as a renewable energy source due to the existing structural problems in waste disposal and complex factors such as the conversion technology of waste emulsified oil (WDF). By combining extended producer responsibility (EPR) support and renewable energy certificates (REC), including waste energy REC 0.25 for other bioenergy and REC 1.0 for power transactions, an adequate profit model can be built through self-energetic power generation, thereby drawing keen attention from related industries. Therefore, if WDF is used appropriately as a high-quality engine fuel, it can lead to the development of various fields such as novel renewable energy sectors, waste management, and EPR-related industries. This study is intended to produce WDF using plastic waste by using it as engine-generator fuel. Moreover, we investigate ways to improve the quality and suitability of WDF as an engine fuel.
In this paper, the first forecasting system of wind power generation, KIER Forecaster is presented. KIER Forecaster has been constructed based on statistical models and was trained with wind speed data observed at Gosan Weather Station nearby Walryong Site. Due to short period of measurements at Walryong Site for training the model, Gosan wind data were substituted and transplanted to Walryong Site by using Measure-Correlate-Predict(MCP) technique. The results of One to Three-hour advanced forecasting models are consistent with the measurement at Walryong site. In particular, the multiple regression model by classification of wind speed pattern, which has been developed in this work, shows the best performance comparing with neural network and auto-regressive models.
This study examines the issues regarding the selection competition process of offshore wind power operators conducted in Japan in 2020. It also explores the implications of the findings on the legal system of Korea for the introduction of offshore wind power in the future. Drawing on Japan's example, Korea must reconsider the importance of the price aspect when introducing offshore wind power and adopt policies that prioritize balanced industrial development and focus on regional and domestic economic ripple effects.

Tidal current energy is an important alternative energy resource among the various ocean energy resources available. The tidal currents in the South-Western sea of Korea can be utilized for the development of tidal current power generation. Tidal power generation can be beneficial for many fishing nurseries and nearby islands in the southwest region of Korea. Moreover, tidal power generation is necessary for promoting energy self-sufficient islands. As tidal currents are always available, power generation is predictable; thus, tidal power is a reliable renewable energy resource. The selection of an appropriate hydrofoil is important for designing a tidal current turbine. This study concentrates on the selection and numerical analysis of four different hydrofoils (MNU26, NACA63421, DU91_W2_250, and DU93_W_210LM). Blade element momentum theory is used for configuring the design of a 50 W class turbine rotor blade. The optimized blade geometry is used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with hexahedral numerical grids. Among the four blades, NACA63421 blade showed the maximum power coefficient of 0.45 at a tip speed ratio of 6. CFD analysis is used to investigate the power coefficient, pressure coefficient, and streamline distribution of a 50 W class horizontal axis tidal current turbine for different hydrofoils.
Most countries in the world are trying to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity and replace them with renewable energy technologies. In Korea, there are abundant ocean renewable energy sources that will play an important role in power generation in the future. This paper introduces a new tidal energy converter utilizing flow induced vibration (FIV), which can work efficiently, even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s. All tests were conducted at the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory at the University of Michigan to examine the effects of the damping ratio of the electric generators on the power outputs and power efficiencies. In these tests, two identical circular cylinders were used, and passive turbulence controllers were applied to the surface of the cylinders to enhance the FIV. The experimental results showed that by using the two cylinders in the FIV, the power output and efficiency reached up to 31 W and 36%, respectively. In particular, the results showed that the power efficiency was higher at the relatively low flow speed (4
Recent alarming acceleration of global warming has made power generations using renewable energy to be in the middle of the spotlight. Korean government has also announced that it will make the related industry to be nation's one of main export items with high investments to low carbon green growth industry. To achieve this goal of exporting the renewable energy power generation system beyond domestic use, internationally acceptable rules should be applied and the three step processes of design, performance assessment and certification should follow international standards. Corresponding this international requests, IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) is conducting the establishment of rules in TC88 for technical requirements of wind turbines. Design life-time of a wind turbine is required to be at least 20 years. In the meantime, the wind turbine will experience a lot of load cases such as extreme loads and fatigue loads which will include several typhoons per year and extreme gusts with 50 years recurrence period as well as endless turbulence flow. Therefore, IEC 61400-1 specifies design load cases to be considered in the wind turbine design and requires the wind turbine to withstand the load cases in various operational situations. It thus appears that the examination of contents and decisions discussed in the international standard committee will help people in the field of offshore wind energy and ocean energy converters.
Biogas is a carbon neutral energy and consists of mostly methane and carbon dioxide, with smaller amounts of water vapor, and trace amounts of $H_2S$, Siloxane and other impurities. Hydrogen sulfide and Siloxane usually must be removed before the gas can be used for generation of electricity or heat. The goals of this project are to develope the Fuel conditioning system of Land Fill Gas for 30kW-Micro Gas Turbine co-generation system. The fuel conditioning system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Land Fill Gas compressor, Siloxane removal system and many filtering systems. The fuel requirement of 30kW MGT is at least 32% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane (<5ppb) and supply pressure (> 0.6 MPa) from LFG compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Micro Gas Turbine system by using LFG have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (96,000 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<9 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for LFG fuel conditioning system. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of Land Fill Gas (LFG), this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.
The paper presents a method of assessing the adequate tapaclty of photovoltaic generation systems for public buildings based on analysis of load variation patterns of customers. When PV systems are installed for supplying power for the customer load, reverse power relay is required by the guideline to be installed at the point of common coupling with the power network. The suggested method analyzes daily, weekly and monthly load demand of the customer that Irishes PV system installation, and determines the appropriate rating of the PV system for preventing PV generation from exceeding the customer demand. This work is expected to support renewable energy dissemination projects of public organizations.
Solar thermal power generation allows additional benefits of cheap thermal storage and easy hybridization with other fossil fuel-driven power generation. KIER has been performing the project for solar thermal chemical reaction hybrid power generation. The project is to build and operate the first solar thermal chemical reaction hybrid power generation system in Korea. For concentrating solar thermal energy $m^2$ dish type concentrator was adapted and a heliostat is installed for reflecting horizontal insolation to the dish concentrator. At the moment building the dish concentrator including mirror and heliostat with sun tracking system was completed and it's performance are being closely evaluated. This paper will introduce some detailed designs and construction procedures which we have experienced so far.
Bio energy development by using Low Calorific Gas Turbine(LCGT) has been developed for New & Renewable energy source for next generation power system, low fuel and operating cost method by using the renewable energy source in landfill gas (LFG), Food Waste, water waste and Livestock biogas. Low calorific fuel purification by pretreatment system and carbon dioxide fixation by green house system are very important design target for evaluate optimum applications for bio energy. Main problems and accidents of Low Calorific Gas Turbine system was derived from bio fuel condition such as hydro sulfide concentration, siloxane level, moisture concentration and so on. Even if the quality of the bio fuel is not better than natural gas, LCGT system has the various fuel range and environmental friendly power system. The mechanical characterisitics of LCGT system is a high total efficiency (>70%), wide range of output power (30kW - 30MW class) and very clean emmission from power system (low NOx). Also, we can use co-generation system. A green house designed for four different carbon dioxide concentration from ambient air to 2000 ppm by utilizing the exhaust gas and hot water from LCGT system. We look forward to contribute the policy for Renewable Portfolio Standards(RPS) by using LCGT power system.
