  • This paper focuses on the relationship between innovation and export performance of technology-based firms in Korea. This study analyses the relationship between innovative activity and firm's performances using a sample of 760 technology-based firms in Korea. As for the firm's performance indicators, export is employed. The empirical results support that innovation has a positive effect on firm's export performance. However, for small and medium firms, the relationship between innovative activity and export performance is an U-shape quadratic form, which shows that small firms takes a minimum innovative expenditure in order to access the abroad market. Also, with product differentiation, innovative firms tends to devot more to domestic market than to abroad market. Therefore, it can be concluded that innovative activity builds market power and accelerates export performance. And product differentiation through advertising expenditure make innovative firms less exporting.

  • This article analyzes the venture firm based upon the new framework of Dynamic Firm Capability (DFC) to identify the process mechanism. Research methodology includes the case study involving structured interview and data collection from two leading Korean ICT(Information Communication Technology) firms in the same sector (DVR). IDIS, spun off from the university, has accumulated the innovative capability based on the R&D department. On the other hand, KODICOM has retained the technological trajectory in terms of marketing competence. Underlying hypothesis is that a firm should show a idiosyncratic evolutionary pattern by acquiring different complimentary assets(CA). In addition, effective internal process should be matched with the essential characteristics not only at the firm level but also at the sectoral level. By analyzing those two different firms, we will find the strategic successful factors based upon the evolutionary point of view. It is a key contribution of this paper to study on the process mechanism of ventures, and to explain detailed process mechanism by viewing two different characteristics of the firm at the functional level.

  • Recently, Kim and Mauborgne (2005a) has introduced the concept of blue ocean strategy that provides quantum leap in value innovation, thus creating new market space. This study, based on the blue ocean strategy concept, suggests blue ocean new product development strategy, and attempts to examine how much impact this blue ocean new product development strategy has on new product performance, compared to existing new product development strategy perspectives based on competitive strategy-based new product development strategy and resource-based new product development strategy, in an empirical way. The research results show that the blue ocean new product development strategy has a statistically significant impact on new product performance. In addition, it was revealed that such contingency variables as firm size and environmental dynamism have moderating effect on the relationship between the blue ocean new product development strategy and new product performance. The blue ocean new product development strategy is more effective in the small-sized firms than the large-sized ones, and its effect on new product performance is different according to environmental dynamism.

  • This study is an attempt to explore the nature and characteristics of strategic impact of green strategy by environmental capital, corporate reputation, and technology strengths on the firm's performance across countries. The main question addressed in this paper relates to how corporate sustainability, corporate reputation, technology strength, and capabilities influence the firm's economic performance with respect to diverse dimensions of performance measures including sustained growth through the leading firms across countries in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia-Pacific countries. Particularly, this study attempts to empirically explore the directions and magnitudes of the operational links between new emerging strategic core competencies (e.g., sustainability green strategy by environmental focus for more sustainable path, corporate reputation by corporate social responsibility and image enhancement, and technology strengths to develop a new product and market) and the firm's economic performance with respect to diverse dimensions of performance such as accounting (ROE and EOA) - and market-based performance (Market value and Tobin's q). Considering all possible limitations that might exist with regard to selected samples and methods, this study demonstrates that environmental sustainability, corporate reputation, technological capabilities and competencies through R&D intensity and patent are most likely to be significantly associated with most market-based performance measures, but the strategic significance of other variables such as capital intensity, leverage, and administrative cost efficiency on performance tends to be different depending on which performance measure is used across different countries with diverse economic and business contexts.

  • This study examines how experience diversity of chief technology officer (CTO) drives radical innovation of the firm, and the moderation effect of group attributes of top management team. Using data of 148 firms in U.S. manufacturing industries, this study finds that a CTO's diverse functional experience increases a firm radicalness, and diverse industrial experience also increases the radicalness. This study also examined the moderating effect of top management team (TMT) characteristics such as TMT size, TMT tenure, and gender composition in TMT. The positive relationship of CTO knowledge diversity and firm radicalness is weakened as TMT size or TMT tenure increased while the relationship is strengthened as gender diversity in TMT increased. These results of the analysis of firm-level radicalness provide implications for both academics and practitioners.

  • The paper aims to evaluate the combination of strategies that influence the success of New Technology Based Firms (NTBFs) located in isolated areas with resource constraints. We utilize the Kauffman Firm Survey to construct a subset of 224 firms operating in primary metal manufacturing industries and who are located in non-thriving areas. We focus on the impact of technological strategy, in the form of Inward Technology Licensing (ITL), combined with financial strategy, in the form of increased financial slack. Using a negative binomial-specification technique to model these relations, we find that ITL positively impacts internal innovation in the firm and this relation is strengthened by the presence of greater financial slack. This positive impact of financial slack supports the behavioral theory of the firm rather than agency theory in that financial slack enables further innovation rather than stifling it. This research confirms the importance of resource acquisition, suggesting that entrepreneurs may utilize external sources of knowledge in an effort to build a favorable situation when facing the challenges of location. Finally, by presenting evidence showing the compatibility of a financial strategy with a knowledge strategy (ITL), this study emphasizes the importance to entrepreneurs of choosing the proper combination of varying strategies.

  • The paper evaluates the Korean science, technology, and innovation policy(STIP) in terms of an individual firm. The firm is Viromed(Ltd), a new technology-based venture company in the field of biotechnology. The case is compared with the 'Hwang Project', which is known as a typical failure case in Korea. In order to evaluate the Korean STIP, we establish 6 areas, which are technological infrastructure, institutional infrastructure, human capital infrastructure, technology market, industrial base, and innovation networks. The study shows that the policy schemes relating with technological infrastructure, institutional infrastructure, human capital infrastructure, and industrial base play a positive role in the start-up, development and innovation of Viromed(Ltd). However, we can hardly find the role of Korean government in fostering the technology market, transferring the technological output to economic performance. Although the international networks with the British, American, and Japanese firms or investors were a key success factor of the growth of Viromed(Ltd), the role of the government in this policy area was not enough. As for the 'Hwang Project', we suggest that the government should consider the possibility of commercialization in choosing R&D projects and determining the size of financial aids. Since the evaluation of the Korean STIP is based on an individual firm, the results of the paper need to be confirmed by a systematic comparison with other cases or industries.

  • Along with the uprising of sustainability issues in the field of business and management, firms increasingly strategize and mobilize resources towards sustainability related activities and processes much more than ever. Together with this phenomenon, the concept of corporate sustainability has been noticed much more by scholars and practitioners from diverse fields. However, differently with an expectation, it is undoubted that there is a small controversy when we treat the issues related to its definition, antecedents, consequences, processes and so on. Based on this kind of understanding, this study tries to suggest and advance a new approach to the corporate sustainability based on the premises of social capital theory for social relations, which explains the role of institutions, and norms that shape firms 'social interactions. Main argument is that firm's voluntary, progressive, and proactive activities for sustainability issues can be understood as the firm's social capital building processes. Though there are a little existing study dealing with this issue, this study has a difference with them by proposing social capital building issues based on firm's real activities. Finally, case analyses based on a new approach are suggested and the theoretical considerations with some limitations are explained.

  • As technology convergence is recognized as a driver of innovation, the identification of technology convergence opportunities is critical to expanding a firm's technology portfolio. Recently, wearable technology has emerged as an important factor in creating new business opportunities and providing technology investment alternatives for firms in the era of Industry 4.0. Against this background, this study provides a new patent analysis framework for identifying and proposing technology convergence opportunities in the wearable field. Using 8,621 patents filed between 2011 and 2021, a case study was conducted to identify technological convergence opportunities by applying Word2Vec algorithm. The analysis framework can be divided into four stages, with the final stage recommending potential technology convergence opportunities for a specific candidate firm's technology area by calculating similarities between technology codes. This study aims to better understand the current status of wearable technology development as well as to propose a new methodology for capturing technology convergence opportunities in the wearable industry. The case study result suggests that the convergence of healthcare and ICT may provide new development opportunities. Furthermore, the results are expected to provide alternative perspectives on the development of new markets and technologies using wearable technology and can support the strategic decision-making on future technology planning in the wearable field.
