New hybrid composite material CPAL(Carbon Patched ALuminum alloy), an Al2024-T3 plate doubleside reinforced with carbon/epoxy laminates were made. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out at R=0.2, 0.5 in the CPAL specimens. The retardation mechanism and behavior of fatigue crack growth were examined basing on investigation of the crack and the delamination using a X-Ray and a ultrasonic C-Scan. The fatigue crack growth rates of CPAL specimens were remarkedly retarded compared to that of the Al2024-T3 specimen. The retardations amounts of the fatigue crack growth rates get higher in $0^{\circ}$/$90^{\circ}$ CPAL specimen than in $\pm$$45^{\circ}$ CPAL specimen, and get higher at R=0.2 than at R=0.5. The retardation of fatigue crack growth rates in CPAL specimen was generated by the crack bridging mechanism, that is the behavior that the fibers in CFRP layers decrease the COD in the Al2024-T3 plate.
Background: Industrial X-ray CT system is normally applied to non-destructive testing (NDT) for industrial product made from metal. Furthermore there are some special CT systems, which have an ability to inspect nuclear fuel assemblies or rocket motors, using high power and high energy (more than 6 MeV) pulsed X-ray source. In these case, pulsed X-ray are produced by the electron linear accelerator, and a huge number of photons with a wide energy spectrum are produced within a very short period. Consequently, it is difficult to measure the X-ray energy spectrum for such accelerator-based X-ray sources using simple spectrometry. Due to this difficulty, unexpected images and artifacts which lead to incorrect density information and dimensions of specimens cannot be avoided in CT images. For getting highly precise CT images, it is important to know the precise energy spectrum of emitted X-rays. Materials and Methods: In order to realize it we investigated a new approach utilizing the Bayesian estimation method combined with an attenuation curve measurement using step shaped attenuation material. This method was validated by precise measurement of energy spectrum from a 1 MeV electron accelerator. In this study, to extend the applicable X-ray energy range we tried to measure energy spectra of X-ray sources from 6 and 9 MeV linear accelerators by using the recently developed method. Results and Discussion: In this study, an attenuation curves are measured by using a step-shaped attenuation materials of aluminum and steel individually, and the each X-ray spectrum is reconstructed from the measured attenuation curve by the spectrum type Bayesian estimation method. Conclusion: The obtained result shows good agreement with simulated spectra, and the presently developed technique is adaptable for high energy X-ray source more than 6 MeV.
Industrial equipment, such as power plant, is required to operate reliably, continuously and economically under rather severe conditions of temperature, stress, and enbironment. To test structural integrity and fitness, ultrasonic nondestructive testing is used because of effectiveness and simplicity. In this paper, wavelet transform based least mean square(LMS) algorithm is applied to reduce the influence of the interference occurring between randomly positioned small scatters. The RUN test is performed to check the nonstationarity of the speckle noise signal. The performance of this new approach is compared with that of the time domain LMS algorithm by means of condition numbers, signal-to-noise ratio and 3-D image. As a result, the wavelet transform based LMS algorithm shows better performance than the time domain LMS algorithm in this experiment.

Shearography is one of optical methods that has been applied to nondestructive testing (NDT) and strain/stress analysis. The technique has the merit of the directly measuring relative displacement, which is insensitive to environmental vibration disturbance. Previous studies about the method have emphasized on extending its application to new fields and lack insufficient research on effective parameters for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of defects. In this paper, the influence of shearing amount on the detection of an internal defect is investigated. In experiment, slender defects along longitudinal direction of pipeline are artificially designed and detection results according to the change of shearing amount are analyzed. Based on the investigation, we propose the technique for the determination of defect size and accurate source location.
This study is about manufacturing and producing girder, which is an essential component of bridge structure, in a composite of FRP + concrete. This has a higher competitive power in price than steel girder. The girder used in this study is made of glass fiber which has a lower elastic modulus than steel and thus has some technical limitations such as excessive deflection compared to steel girder and lack of production facilities in FRP production companies to make a large-section component material. Thus, this study suggested a section of a new module that will allow for applying a large section in order to solve the technical difficulties mentioned above and to secure low stiffness of FRP, developed a new FRP+concrete composite girder that is filled with the appropriate amount of concrete. To identify the structural behavior of this FRP+concrete composite girder, experiments were conducted to measure its flexural strength according to the difference in the strength of confined concrete and the existence of stud. The results of the flexural strength test confirmed the composite effect from confining concrete and the effect of increase in strength proportional to the strength of concrete. In developing FRP+concrete composite girder, NDT study was also conducted to analyze the interface characteristics of concrete and FRP.

Recently, urban retrofit and extension, development of new buildings and facilities, and construction of underground structures like subway tunnels in urban areas give rise to significance of site investigation at urban areas. However, ambient electric noises, traffic vibrations, embedded objects work as obstacles to high-quality and accuracy in site investigation at urban areas. In this paper, a new technique called the pseudo-DC resistivity survey (in brief, PDC-R) was proposed to minimize the adverse effect of ambient electrical noises in resistivity survey. PDC-R technique utilizes an AC current with frequency range of 0.1 to 1.0 Hz rather than DC current, which is used for conventional resistivity survey. The motivation of using low-frequency AC current is to avoid 60-Hz components or its multiples in the resistivity survey which ambient noises are mostly composed of. The implementation of PDC-R technique also included the parametric study on skin effect, frequency effect and current-level effect, which led to the determination of optimal values of frequency and current level for PDC-R survey. The reliability and feasibility of PDC-R technique was verified through field tests, accompanied by the comparison with DC resistivity survey and CapSASW tests.

This study examines which models are more suitable for representing mechanical property of unbound materials to analyze behavior of asphalt pavement structure. Results from FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) test were used to apply to nonlinear elastic model. The new method which can deduct material constants of nonlinear elastic model is suggested from FWD test data rather than laboratory resilient modulus ($M_R$) test. It is confirmed that the material constants are within the common range in subbase. Test output from FWD and MDD (Multi-Depth Deflectometer) was used to verify reliability of the model. From the results of verification, this study shows that a non-linear elastic model agrees to MDD test data more than a linear elastic model does.
