  • Optical-based imaging technology has high resolution and can assess images in real time. Numerous studies have been conducted for its application in the dental field. The current research introduces an oral camera that includes fluorescent imaging, a second study examining a 3D intraoral scanner applying a confocal method and a polarization structure that identifies the 3D image of a tooth, and finally, an optical coherence tomography technique. Using this technique, we introduce a new concept 3D oral scanner that simultaneously implements 3D structural imaging as well as images that diagnose the inside of teeth. With the development of light source technology and detector technology, various optical-based imaging technologies are expected to be applied in dentistry.

  • Blood pressure is one of the important vital signs for monitoring the medical condition of a patient. Automated NIBP(non-invasive blood pressure) monitoring devices calculate systolic and diastolic blood pressures from the oscillation in cuff pressure caused by a pulsation of an artery. To validate the NIBP devices, we developed a simulator to supply the oscillometric waveforms obtained from human subjects. The simulator provided pressure pulses to device-under-test and device readings were compared to the auscultatory references. Fully automated simulation system including OCR(optical character recognition) were developed and used for NIBP monitoring devices. The validation results using the simulator agreed well with previous clinical validation. More validation studies using the standardized oscillometric waveforms would be required for the replacement of clinical trials to validate a new automated NIBP monitoring device.

  • The evaluation of interval changes between temporally sequential chest radiographs is necessary for the detection of new abnormalities or interval changes, such as pulmonary nodules and interstitial disease. For interstitial lung disease, the interval changes are very important for diagnosis and treatment. Especially, interstitial lung disease may show rapid changes in the radiographs, show changes in the entire lung field in minute detail, or show changes in multiple parts depending on the type. It is therefore difficult to have an accurate grasp of the condition of the disease only with conventional radiographs. The temporal subtraction technique which was developed at the University of Chicago, provides a subtraction image of the current warped image and the previous image. A temporal subtraction image, shows only differences and changes between the two images, can be very useful for a diagnosis of interstitial lung disease. However, the evaluation of the temporal subtraction technique for interstitial lung disease using receiver operating characteristic(ROC) studies has not been reported yet. Therefore, we have evaluated the clinical usefulness of a temporal subtraction technique for detection of interval changes of interstitial lung disease by ROC analysis.

  • Custom medical treatment is being widely adapted to lots of medical applications. A technology for 3D modeling is strongly required to fabricate medical implants for individual patient. Needs on true 3D CAD data of a patient is strongly required for tissue engineering and human body simulations. Medical imaging devices show human inner section and 3D volume rendering images of human organs. CT or MRI is one of the popular imaging devices for that use. However, those image data is not sufficient to use for medical fabrication or simulation. This paper mainly deals how to generate 3D geometry data from those medical images. A new image processing technology is introduced to reconstruct 3D geometry of a human body vacancy from the medical images. Then a surface geometry data is reconstructed by using Marching cube algorithm. Resulting CAD data is a custom 3D geometry data of human vacancy. This paper introduces a novel 3D reconstruction process and shows some typical examples with implemented software.

  • Objectives : Korean medicine practice is not specifically described in medical law, and then has always been a quarrel. So far The criteria for judgment in Korean Medicine Doctor's Medical Devices Using should clinically prove it only by Korean medicine theory and academic Traditionally descending from old ancestors. Comprehensively review of Korean Medicine Doctor's Medical Devices Using and Duty of Care, and then present a new understandings to determine future Korean Medicine Practice. Method : An existing court cases of Korean Medicine Doctor's Medical Devices Using and Duty of Care were reviewed. After reviewing various papers published for several years, various opinions were reviewed and suggested. Results : The range of Korean Medicine Doctor's Medical Devices Using has changed since the 1951 National Medical Law stipulated Korean medicine as medical professionals. The issue of the recent ruling that distinguishes medical practice from Korean medicine practice were condensed into what emphasis to interpret amongst 1) The basic principles of learning, 2) Curriculum and professionalism, 3) Risks. The Constitutional Court's ruling was important in order of 'Risk', 'curriculum and expertise', and 'basic principles of learning.' A duty of Care means an obligation to pay attention to something. A duty of Care does not mean a "highest level," but requires a "best care" and does "best under given conditions." Even in the duty of Care, Because Korean medicine has a purpose to protect and promote the health of the people, Some standards of western medicine have to be adapted to the current general medical technology. Korean Medicine doctors can recognize the duty of care in the "some basic range" of knowledge belonging to western medicine. Conclusions : The interpretation of Korean Medicine practice are currently in compatible the argument that should clearly divide Korean medicine from Western medicine, and that should be changed in light of the changing medical environment. Therefore If Korean medicine's standard is applied to the extent to which Korean Medicine doctors are educated, it is necessary to define a new definition to actively interpret Korean Medical practice. The academic basis of Korean medicine and the level of Korean medicine practice based on the books that are traditionally available, and then current textbooks of Korean Medicine College, Korean Medicine Clinical Care Guidelines, and classification of Korean standard medical practices should be standardized. Increasingly, Korean Medicine practice should be interpreted according to reality, focusing on protecting and promoting the health of the people rather than academic differences.

  • Purpose: In order to keep the acceptable level of the radiation oncology linear accelerators, it is necessary to apply a reliable quality assurance (QA) program. Materials and Methods: The QA protocols, published by authoritative organizations, such as the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), determine the quality control (QC) tests which should be performed on the medical linear accelerators and the threshold levels for each test. The purpose of this study is to increase the accuracy and precision of the selected QC tests in order to increase the quality of treatment and also increase the speed of the tests to convince the crowded centers to start a reliable QA program. A new method has been developed for two of the QC tests; optical distance indicator (ODI) QC test as a daily test and gantry angle QC test as a monthly test. This method uses an image processing approach utilizing the snapshots taken by the CCD camera to measure the source to surface distance (SSD) and gantry angle. Results: The new method of ODI QC test has an accuracy of 99.95% with a standard deviation of 0.061 cm and the new method for gantry angle QC has a precision of $0.43^{\circ}$. The automated proposed method which is used for both ODI and gantry angle QC tests, contains highly accurate and precise results which are objective and the human-caused errors have no effect on the results. Conclusion: The results show that they are in the acceptable range for both of the QC tests, according to AAPM task group 142.

  • The current medical practices in Korea have raised many new ethical issues. The current education system in medical colleges, however, is finding it difficult to cope with these rapidly arising medical issues. Many educators, therefore, became much more concerned about the importance of ethics and character education in medical colleges, but teaching methods or educational programs centered around the same have not yet been developed. Dilemma discussion is regarded as an available teaching method but is not frequently used in medical education. In this respect, this study aims to apply dilemma discussion programs to ethics and character education for medical students. It was discovered that dilemma discussion is an effective instructional method for enhancing the moral reasoning ability of medical students. According to $Rest^{\circ}{\phi}s$ theoretical framework, however, a dilemma discussion program focuses on two components of morality: moral judgment and moral sensitivity. Moral judgment and moral sensitivity are major components in predicting moral behaviors. Therefore, the target of dilemma discussion programs is to focus on these two components. It is reasonable to integrate moral judgment with moral sensitivity for ethics and character education in medical schools.

  • With hope and concern, the first Korean proton therapy facility was introduced to the National Cancer Center (NCC) in 2007. It added a new chapter to the history of Korean radiation therapy. There have been challenging clinical trials using proton beam therapy, which has seen many impressive results in cancer treatment. Compared to the rapidly increasing number of proton therapy facilities in the world, only one more proton therapy center has been added since 2007 in Korea. The Samsung Medical Center installed a proton therapy facility in 2015. Most radiation oncology practitioners would agree that the physical properties of the proton beam provide a clear advantage in radiation treatment. But the expensive cost of proton therapy facilities is still one of the main reasons that hospitals are reluctant to introduce them in Korea. I herein introduce the history of proton therapy and the cutting edge technology used in proton therapy. In addition, I will cover the role of a medical physicist in proton therapy and the future prospects of proton therapy, based on personal experience in participating in proton therapy programs from the beginning at the NCC.
