  • The analysis of extracellular vesicles has been accelerated because of the technological advancements in omics methods in recent decades. Extracellular vesicles provide multifaceted information regarding the functional status of the cells. This information would be critical in case of central nervous system cells, which are confined in a relatively sealed biological compartment. This obstacle is more dramatic in psychiatric disorders since their diagnosis primarily depend on the symptoms and signs of the patients. In this paper, we reviewed this rapidly advancing field by discussing definition of extracellular vesicles, their biogenesis and potential use as clinical biomarkers. Then we focused on their potential use in psychiatric disorders in the context of diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. Finally, we tried to combine the RDoC (Research Domain Criteria) with the use of extracellular vesicles in psychiatry research and practice. This review may offer new insights in both basic and translational research focusing on psychiatric disorders.

  • Purpose : Eyeball movement is one of the main artifacts in EEG. A new approach to the removal of these artifacts is presented using independent component analysis(ICA). This technique is a signal-processing algorithm to separate independent sources from unknown mixed signals. This study was performed to show that ICA is a useful method for the separation of EEG components with little data deformity. Methods : 12 sets of 10 sec digital EEG data including eye opening and closure were obtained using international 10~20 system scalp electrodes. ICA with 18 tracings of double banana bipolar montage was performed. Among obtained 18 independent components, two components, which were thought to be eyeball movements were removed. Other 16 components were reconstructed into original bipolar montage. Power spectral analysis of EEGs before and after ICA was done and compared statistically. Total 12 pairs of data were compared by visual inspection and relative power comparison. Results : Waveforms of each pair looked alike by visual inspection. Means of relative power before and after ICA were 29.16% vs. 28.27%, 12.12% vs. 12.41%, 10.55% vs. 10.52%, and 19.33% vs. 18. 33% for alpha, beta, theta, and delta, respectively. These values were statistically same before and after ICA. Conclusions : We found little data deformity after ICA and it was possible to isolate eyeball movements in EEG recordings. Many other components of EEG could be selectively separated using ICA.

  • Power electronics modules are semiconductor components that are widely used in airplanes, trains, automobiles, and energy generation and conversion facilities. In particular, insulated gate bipolar transistors(IGBT) have been widely utilized in high power and fast switching applications for power management including power supplies, uninterruptible power systems, and AC/DC converters. In these days, IGBT are the predominant power semiconductors for high current applications in electrical and hybrid vehicles application. In these application environments, the physical conditions are often severe with strong electric currents, high voltage, high temperature, high humidity, and vibrations. Therefore, IGBT module packages involves a number of challenges for the design engineer in terms of reliability. Thermal and thermal-mechanical management are critical for power electronics modules. The failure mechanisms that limit the number of power cycles are caused by the coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the materials used in the IGBT modules. All interfaces in the module could be locations for potential failures. Therefore, a proper thermal design where the temperature does not exceed an allowable limit of the devices has been a key factor in developing IGBT modules. In this paper, we discussed the effects of various package materials on heat dissipation and thermal management, as well as recent technology of the new package materials.

  • As the power electronics system increases the frequency, the power loss and thermal management are paid more attention. This research presents a real time model of dissipation power with junction temperature response for 120kw IGBT inverter which is applied to the thermal management of high power IGBT inverter. Since the computational time is critical for real time simulation, look-up tables of IGBT module characteristic curve are implemented. The power loss from IGBT provides a clue to calculate the temperature of each module of IGBT. In this study, temperature of each layer in IGBT is predicted by lumped capacitance analysis of layers with convective heat transfer. The power loss and temperature of layers in IGBT is then communicated due to mutual dependence. In the dynamic model, PWM pulses are employed to calculation real time IGBT and diode power loss. Under Matlab/Simulink$^{(R)}$ environment, the dynamic model is validated with experiment. Results showed that the dynamic response of power loss is closely coupled with effective thermal management. The convective heat transfer is enough to achieve proper thermal management under guideline temperature.

  • This paper deals with the blocking of DC-fault current during DC cable short-circuit conditions in HVDC (High-Voltage DC) transmission systems utilizing Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs), where a new SubModule (SM) topology circuit for the MMC is proposed. In this SM circuit, an additional Insulated-Gate Bipolar Translator (IGBT) is required to be connected at the output terminal of a conventional SM with a half-bridge structure, hereafter referred to as HBSM, where the anti-parallel diodes of additional IGBTs are used to block current from the grid to the DC-link side. Compared with the existing MMCs based on full-bridge (FB) SMs, the hybrid topologies of HBSM and FBSM, and the clamp-double SMs, the proposed topology offers a lower cost and lower power loss while the fault current blocking capability in the DC short-circuit conditions is still provided. The effectiveness of the proposed topology has been validated by simulation results obtained from a 300-kV 300-MW HVDC transmission system and experimental results from a down-scaled HVDC system in the laboratory.

  • Currently, the AC-to-DC power conversion system using diode rectifiers is mainly used in large vessels. Also, to reduce the total harmonic distortion(THD) of current and voltage, this system requires an additional phase-shifting transformer which can be powered multi-pulses. In this case, due to the installation of the transformer, the spatial or economic loss occurs. This paper presents a novel active rectification scheme using silicon controlled rectifier(SCR) or insulated gate bipolar transistor(IGBT) devices on behalf of the diode rectifiers which are currently operating in large vessels such as LNG Carrier(LNGC). The proposed system can use the low voltage source and reduce current and voltage harmonics generated by nonlinear loads connected to the power distribution bus and save economic costs by removing the phase-shifting transformers which are used in conventional system. Computer simulations are performed under the electric propulsion system which is operating in current large vessel. The results are shown in support of the improvement of THD included in the current and voltage wave forms of propulsion motor.

  • This paper presents the new power dissipation model of individual switching device in a high-level modular multilevel converter (MMC), which can be mostly used in voltage sourced converter (VSC) based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS). Also, the voltage balancing method based on sorting algorithm is newly proposed to advance the MMC functionalities by effectively adjusting switching variations of the sub-module (SM). The proposed power dissipation model does not fully calculate the average power dissipation for numerous switching devices in an arm module. Instead, it estimates the power dissipation of every switching element based on the inherent operational principle of SM in MMC. In other words, the power dissipation is computed in every single switching event by using the polynomial curve fitting model with minimum computational efforts and high accuracy, which are required to manage the large number of SMs. After estimating the value of power dissipation, the thermal condition of every switching element is considered in the case of external disturbance. Then, the arm modeling for high-level MMC and its control scheme is implemented with the electromagnetic transient simulation program. Finally, the case study for applying to the MMC based HVDC system is carried out to select the appropriate insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module in a steady-state, as well as to estimate the proper thermal condition of every switching element in a transient state.
