This paper proposes a ubiquitous robot, Ubibot, as an integration of three forms of robots: Software robot (Sobot), Embedded robot (Embot) and Mobile robot (Mobot). A Sobot is a virtual robot, which has the ability to move to any place or connect to any device through a network in order to overcome spatial limitations. It has the capacity to interpret the context and thus interact with the user. An Embot is embedded within the environment or within physical robots. It can recognize the locations of and authenticate the user or robot, and synthesize sensing information. Also it has the ability to deliver essential information to the user or other components of Ubibot by using various types of output devices. A Mobot provides integrated mobile service. In addition, Middleware intervenes different protocols between Sobot, Embot, and Mobot in order to incorporate them reliably. The services provided by Ubibot will be seamless, calm and context-aware based on the combination of these components. This paper presents the basic concepts and structure of Ubibot. A Sobot, called Rity, is introduced in order to investigate the usability of the proposed concepts. Rity is a 3D synthetic character which exists in the virtual world, has a unique IP address and interacts with human beings through Vision Embot, Sound Embot, Position Embot and Voice Embot. Rity is capable of moving into a Mobot and controlling its mobility. In doing so, Rity can express its behavior in the virtual world, for example, wondering or moving about in the real world. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a Ubibot in a networked environment.
$\textbullet$ An autonomous mobile robot was controlled through the Internet. $\textbullet$ For the direct control, the feedback data should be provided properly. $\textbullet$ Therefore, an efficient communication scheme should be defined. $\textbullet$ To overcome the transmission delay, the highly abstracted message format was used. $\textbullet$ As the feedback data, the real image sequences may suffer the transmission delay or loss of content. $\textbullet$ To resolve this, the feature information was used to construct the synthetic feedback information. $\textbullet$ By doing this, the operator could feel the hands-on control with an Internet-based robot.
Despite significant advances in multimedia transferring technologies in various fields of robotics, it is sometimes quite difficult for the operator to fully understand the context of 3D remote environments from 2D image feedback. Particularly, in the remote control of mobile robots, the recognition of the object associated with the task is very important, because the operator has to control the robot safely in various situations not through trial and error. Therefore, it is necessary to provide the operator with 3D volumetric models of the object and object-related information as well such as locations, shape, size, material properties, and so on. Thus, in this paper, we propose a vision-based human interface system that provides an interactive, information-rich map through network-based information brokering. The system consists of an object recognition part, a 3D map building part, a networked knowledge base part, and a control part of the mobile robot.
In recent years, a lot of industrial equipments have serial communication channel such as FieldBus (CAN, Profibus, etc.) or Ethernet that provides real time communication between industrial equipments. Theses applications include gantry crane, robot, chip mounter, etc.. In this paper, we discuss the synchronization technique for networked multi-motor systems where controllers (commercial servo amps) are distributed and interconnected by CAN (Controller Area Networks). We first describe the equivalent model for the individual servo-amp and motor using the frequency response. We design the $H{\infty}$ controller for motion synchronization. Finally, the synchronization technique using the equivalent model and the $H{\infty}$ controller is verified by the simulation and the experiment.

In this paper, a sensor fusion based robot navigation method for the autonomous control of a miniature human interaction robot is presented. The method of navigation blends the optimality of the Fuzzy Neural Network(FNN) based control algorithm with the capabilities in expressing knowledge and learning of the networked Intelligent Robotic Space(IRS). States of robot and IR space, for examples, the distance between the mobile robot and obstacles and the velocity of mobile robot, are used as the inputs of fuzzy logic controller. The navigation strategy is based on the combination of fuzzy rules tuned for both goal-approach and obstacle-avoidance. To identify the environments, a sensor fusion technique is introduced, where the sensory data of ultrasonic sensors and a vision sensor are fused into the identification process. Preliminary experiment and results are shown to demonstrate the merit of the introduced navigation control algorithm.
The paper proposes a human-following behavior of mobile robot and an intelligent space (ISpace) is used in order to achieve these goals. An ISpace is a 3-D environment in which many sensors and intelligent devices are distributed. Mobile robots exist in this space as physical agents providing humans with services. A mobile robot is controlled to track a walking human using distributed intelligent sensors as stably and precisely as possible. The moving objects is assumed to be a point-object and projected onto an image plane to form a geometrical constraint equation that provides position data of the object based on the kinematics of the intelligent space. Uncertainties in the position estimation caused by the point-object assumption are compensated using the Kalman filter. To generate the shortest time trajectory to track the walking human, the linear and angular velocities are estimated and utilized. The computer simulation and experimental results of estimating and trackinging of the walking human with the mobile robot are presented.
This paper characterizes the performance for a remote path tracking control of the mobile robot in IP network viamiddleware. The middleware is used to alleviate the effect of the delay time on a mobile robot path tracking in Network-Based Control environment. The middleware also can be implemented in a modular structure. Thus, a controller upgrade or modification for other types of network protocols or different control objectives can be achieved easily. A case study on a mobile robot path-tracking with IP network delays is described. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by experimental results.
This research addresses sound command based human tracking problems for autonomous cleaning mobile robot in a networked AI space. To solve the problem, the difference among the traveling times of the sound command to each of three microphones has been used to calculate the distance and orientation of the sound from the cleaning mobile robot, which carries the microphone array. The cross-correlation between two signals has been applied for detecting the time difference between two signals, which provides reliable and precise value of the time difference compared to the conventional methods. To generate the tracking direction to the sound command, fuzzy rules are applied and the results are used to control the cleaning mobile robot in a real-time. Finally the experiment results show that the proposed algorithm works well, even though the mobile robot knows little about the environment.
In this paper, the Artificial Intelligence Space(AI-Space) for human-robot interface is presented, which can enable human-computer interfacing, networked camera conferencing, industrial monitoring, service and training applications. We present a method for representing, tracking, and objects(human, robot, chair) following by fusing distributed multiple vision systems in AI-Space. The article presents the integration of color distributions into particle filtering. Particle filters provide a robust tracking framework under ambiguous conditions. We propose to track the moving objects(human, robot, chair) by generating hypotheses not in the image plane but on the top-view reconstruction of the scene.
A security robot system named EGIS-SR is a mobile security robot through one of the new growth engine project in robotic industries. It allows home surveillance through an autonomous mobile platform using onboard cameras and wireless security sensors. EGIS-SR has many sensors to allow autonomous navigation, hierarchical control architecture to handle lots of situations in monitoring home surveillance and mighty networks to achieve unmanned security services. EGIS-SR is tightly coupled with a networked security environment, where the information of the robot is remotely connected with the remote cockpit and patrol man. It achieved an intelligent unmanned security service. The robot is a two-wheeled mobile robot and has casters and suspension to overcome a doorsill. The dynamic motion is verified through $ADAMS^{TM}$ simulation. For the main controller, PXA270 based hardware platform based on linux kernel 2.6 is developed. In the linux platform, data handling for various sensors and the localization algorithm are performed. Also, a local path planning algorithm for object avoidance with ultrasonic sensors and localization using $StarGazer^{TM}$ is developed. Finally, for the automatic charging, a docking algorithm with infrared ray system is implemented.
