Evaluation indicators for the restoration of degraded urban ecosystems and the analysis of restoration performance (훼손된 도시생태계 생태복원 평가지표 제시 및 복원성과 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze the effect of urban ecosystem restoration projects by evaluating the short-term restoration performance of the project sites, from both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. In this study, for the qualitative evaluation, we derived the evaluation frame from previous studies and literature. For the quantitative evaluation, the changes in ecological connectivity after the restoration project were described using landscape permeability and network analysis. In addition, changes in habitat quality after the restoration project were evaluated by using InVEST Habitat Quality Model. These evaluations were applied to the three natural madang (ecological restoration) projects and two ecosystem conservation cooperation projects. As a result, three categories, 10 indicators, and 13 sub-indicators were derived from literature as the evaluation frame for this study. In the case of quantitative evaluation of restoration performance, habitat quality increased by 45% and ecological connectivity by 37% in natural-madang, and habitat quality by about 12% and ecological connectivity by about 19% in ecosystem conservation cooperation projects. This implies that the ecological restoration project can increase the ecological connectivity and the habitat quality of degraded sites even in a short period of time by improving the land-cover and land use. The results by applying the evaluation frame indicated that ecological and environmental factors and the ecological functions were improved by the restoration works, even though the magnitude of performances were diverse depending on the specific evaluation items, project type, and site characteristics. This study clarified that the success of ecological restoration project should be assessed by both of the short-term and long-term goals, which can be achieved by the maintenance and sustainable management, respectively.

An Empirical Study on the Network Theory, Economic Structure and Economic Shocks: The Implications on Technology Economics (네트워크이론과 경제구조 그리고 경제충격에 관한 실증연구: 기술경제적 함의)

  • The theoretical discussion of generation process and development directions of economic fluctuations are actively discussed. This study describes the economic changes applied to empirical research on economic volatility in Korea under the economic theory of network theory [Acemoglu, et al. 2012, 2010]. For the three years in 2000, 2005, and 2010, the network analysis were applied to industry input-output tables. The research results show that the network economic structures in Korea is shifted from a high connectivity among sectors to a lower connectivity. Also, the impact of key industries and the mutual connectivity of input and out among industrial sectors are weaken. Implications for industry and technology policy are derived form the study results.

  • This study is a fundamental research to determine the emergency evacuation roads considering road network function and connectivity. First of all, the functional aspects of the road networks are analyzed in the target area, Sejong city, by using degree centrality(DC) and closeness centrality(CC) from GIS based database. Secondly, how network connectivity makes a change in user's travel pattern and travel time and how it affects the whole network are analyzed using TransCAD simulation program. Finally, after performing cluster analysis of index, first and second emergency evacuation roads are determined by judging the characteristics of clusters. The results of this research will be helpful for making a decision to diminish secondary damages when confronting unexpected disasters.

  • By intergrating technologies for protable computers, radio communications, and computer networking, the Land Mobile Computer Network(LMCN) is supposed to overcome the time and space limitation of present computer communication network. However, because the MHs(mobile hosts) do move any time, the network connectivity is often changed causing temporarily duplicated lost, or out-of-sequenced message delivery as well as frequent communications for maintainning the network connectivity. Previous works solved the problems through message flooding, used also in multicasting, resulting in high communication cost(i.e., number of communication messages). In this paper, new protocols for efficient mobility management and multicasting are proposed. The protocols define location update, handover, and multicasting procedure of a MH over a hierarchical LMCN architecture. The protocol specification is presented, and it is shown that the communication cost of the new protocols is superior to the existing ones in terms of the communication cost.

  • This paper designs and Implements a connectivity analyzer for the hybrid vehicular network based on the real-life movement history data achieved from the Taxi telematics system currently in operation, aiming at providing a useful guideline and information to build a telematics network. The simulator traces the location of each vehicle, sets the vehicle type, either gateway or normal, decides whether it can be connected to a mobile gateway, keeps track of status of the vehicle, and calculates the duration of disconnected state. With this analysis considering the transmission range and gateway ratio, we can decide the cost-effective number of mobile gateways having both cellular and ad-hoc network interfaces, and buffer space requirement based on the measured disconnection time and message generation ratio.

Dimensioning of linear and hierarchical wireless sensor networks for infrastructure monitoring with enhanced reliability

  • Wireless Sensor Networks have extensively been utilized for ambient data collection from simple linear structures to dense tiered deployments. Issues related to optimal resource allocation still persist for simplistic deployments including linear and hierarchical networks. In this work, we investigate the case of dimensioning parameters for linear and tiered wireless sensor network deployments with notion of providing extended lifetime and reliable data delivery over extensive infrastructures. We provide a single consolidated reference for selection of intrinsic sensor network parameters like number of required nodes for deployment over specified area, network operational lifetime, data aggregation requirements, energy dissipation concerns and communication channel related signal reliability. The dimensioning parameters have been analyzed in a pipeline monitoring scenario using ZigBee communication platform and subsequently referred with analytical models to ensure the dimensioning process is reflected in real world deployment with minimum resource consumption and best network connectivity. Concerns over data aggregation and routing delay minimization have been discussed with possible solutions. Finally, we propose a node placement strategy based on a dynamic programming model for achieving reliable received signals and consistent application in structural health monitoring with multi hop and long distance connectivity.

Indices Characterizing Road Network on Geo-Spatial Imagery as Transportation Network Analysis

  • In GIS-based network analysis, topological measure of network structure can be considered as one of important factors in the urban transportation analysis. Related to this measure, it is known that the connectivity indices such as alpha index and gamma index, which mean degree of network connectivity and complexity on a graph or a circuit, provide fundamental information. On the other hand, shimbel index is one of GIS-based spatial metrics to characterize degree of network concentration. However, the approach using these quantitative indices has not been widely used in practical level yet. In this study, an application program, in complied as extension, running on ArcView- GIS is implemented and demonstrated case examples using basic layers such as road centerline and administrative boundary. In this approach, geo-spatial imagery can be effectively used to actual applications to determine the analysis zone, which is composed of networks to extract these indices. As the results of the implementation and the case examples, it is notified that alpha and gamma indices as well as shimbel index can be used as referential data or auxiliary information for urban planning and transportation planning.

Connectivity of the GAODV Routing Protocol (GAODV 라우팅 프로토콜의 연결성)

  • The route request (RREQ) packet is selectively re-broadcasted in the routing protocols that improve the broadcast storm problem of the ad-hoc on-demand routing protocol (AODV). However, in a low node density scenario, the connectivity of these selective rebroadcast schemes becomes less than that of the AODV. In order to clarify the requirements of these selective re-broadcast routing protocols, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between the node density and the connectivity. In this paper, we drive a probability to preserve the connectivity of the GAODV at an intermediate rebroadcast node. In addition, we present an intuitive method to approximate the end-to-end connectivity of the GAODV. We draw the required node density to guarantee the connectivity of 0.9 and 0.99 through computer simulations, and verify the validity of the derived theoritical connectivity by comparing with the simulation results.

Attunement Disorder : A Disorder of Brain Connectivity (조현병(調鉉病) : 뇌 연결성의 장애)

  • Objectives We reviewed cellular and synaptic dysconnectivity, disturbances in micro- and macro- circuitries, and neurodevelopmentally-derived disruptions of neural connectivity in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Method We reviewed the selected articles about disturbances in neural circuits which had been proposed as a pathogenetic mechanism of schizophrenia. Results The literature review reveals that schizophrenia may be a disease related to disturbance in neurodevelopmental mechanism, shown as 'a misconnection syndrome of neural circuit or neural network'. In descriptive psychopathological view, definition of a disorder of brain connectivity has limitation to explain other aspects of schizophrenia including deterministic strictness in thought process. Conclusion Schizophrenia is considered as a disorder of brain connectivity as well as a neurodevelopmental disorder related with genetic and environmental factors. We could make a suggestion that "JoHyeonByung (attunement disorder)" denotes the disturbances of psychic fine-tuning which correspond to the neural correlates of brain dysconnectivity metaphorically.
