An oxyfluoride glass ceramic containing Eu2+-doped nepheline and LaF3 crystals was modified, with BaF2 replacing LaF3 up to 20 mole percent, and its luminescence change was monitored. With increasing BaF2 content, the greenish yellow emission centered at 540 nm under 400-nm excitation decreased, and a new afterglow emission from the modified ceramic was observed after removal of the excitation light source. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) were used to investigate the changes in the crystalline phases within the glass matrix. Time dependent emission intensity was monitored to observe the afterglow, and the possible mechanism for the afterglow due to BaF2 addition was considered.

The glass-ceramics composed of coal bottom ash produced from a thermal power plant, $Na_{2}O$ and $Li_{2}O$ as a flux agent and $TiO_2$ as a nucleation agent were fabricated and its microstructures were analyzed. The nepheline was a major crystal phase in the glass-ceramics fabricated and its amount increased with $TiO_2$ addition. The glass-ceramics without $TiO_2$ addition had the thick surface crystals induced by a surface-crystallization mechanism and no crystal in the interior matrix. The surface crystallization, however, was restrained and the interior matrix was completely crystallized showing dendrite shape spread with fine particles < $1{\mu}m$ when added with $TiO_2$ above 4 wt%. For the glass-ceramics containing 6 wt% $TiO_2$, the $5{\mu}m$-long dendrite crystal; were interlocked each other which could suppress the crack propagation effectively at the external loading applied.
This study has been investigated to analyze the thermal stability of cesium reacted with fly ash with changing mole ratio of Cs/Al in hydrogen atmosphere. When the $CsNO_3$ and fly ash were reacted at $1000^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen atmosphere, cesium $nepheline(CsAlSiO_4)$ Phase began to emerge in addition to $pollucite(CsAlSi_2O_6)$ phase when the cesium loading quantity was greater than $0.32(g-Cs_2O/g-fly\; ash)$. Cesium $nepheline(CsAlSiO_4)$ Phase increased with increasing cesium loading quantity. When cesium trapped on a fly ash was exposed to $1200^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen atmosphere, no weight loss due to the volatilization was shown until the cesium loading quantity was reached at $0.32(g-Cs_2O/g-fly\; ash)$. In the case of the cesium loading quantity of $0.48-0.74(g-Cs_2O/g-fly\;ash)$ in hydrogen atmosphere, the weight loss increased with increasing the cesium loading quantity. This is considered to be due to the cesium $nepheline(CsAlSiO_4)$ whose vapor pressure is higher than that of $pollucite(CsAlSi_2O_6)$.
Understanding the effect of boron content on atomic structures of boron-bearing multicomponent silicate melts is essential to reveal the atomistic origins of diverse geochemical processes involving silica-rich magmas, such as explosive volcanic eruption. The detailed atomic environments around B and Al in boron-bearing complex aluminosilicate glasses yield atomistic insights into reactivity of nuclear waste glasses in contact with aqueous solutions. We report experimental results on the effect of boron content on the atomic structures of sodium borate glasses and boron-bearing multicomponent silicate melts [malinkoite ($NaBSiO_4$)-nepheline ($NaAlSiO_4$) pseudo-binary glasses] using the high-resolution solid-state NMR ($^{11}B$ and $^{27}Al$). The $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra of sodium borate glasses show that three-coodrinated boron ($^{[3]}B$) increases with increasing $B_2O_3$ content. While the spectra imply that the fraction of non-ring species decreases with decreasing boron content, peak position of the species is expected to vary with Na content. Therefore, the quantitative estimation of the fractions of the ring/non-ring species remains to be explored. The $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra of the glasses in the malinkoite-nepheline join show that four-coordinated boron ($^{[4]}B$) increases as $X_{Ma}$ [$=NaBSiO_4/(NaBSiO_4+NaAlSiO_4)$] increases while $^{[3]}B$ decreases. $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectra of the multicomponent glasses confirm that four-coordinated aluminum ($^{[4]}Al$) is dominant. It is also observed that a drastic decrease in the peak widths (full-width at half-maximum, FWHM) of $^{[4]}Al$ with an addition of boron ($X_{Ma}=0.25$) in nepheline glasses. This indicates a decrease in structural and topological disorder around $^{[4]}Al$ in the glasses with increasing boron content. The quantitative atomic environments around boron of both binary and multicomponent glasses were estimated from the simulation results of $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra, revealing complex-nonlinear variation of boron topology with varying composition. The current results can be potentially used to account for the structural origins of the change in macroscopic properties of boron-bearing oxide melts with varying boron content.
This study is proposed to find an appropriate body for high expansion glass ceramics of ${Na}_2O-{Al}_2O_3-{SiO}_2$ system. The compositions of basic glasses are selected to be melted easily and to be crystallized into nepheline with various contents of alumina. The crystallization temperatures of basic glasses are determined by DTA. The crystals in the basic glasses developed by heat treatment are investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermal properties such as expansion coefficients, fusion points are measured. We find, therefore, that crystallization temperatures, crystal phases and thermal properties are affected by content of alumina.
To use a tailing obtained from coal beneficiation as a raw material for glass material, the behaviors of phase transformation of the tailing was investigated according to sintered temperature with the addition of Na2CO3. As a result of the experiment, mullite was formed at 700~1,100 ℃, and the mullite and the cristobalite just only existed at 1,450 ℃. The glassification ratio of the coal tailing was to be 97.9 wt.% at 1,450 ℃ with the addition of Na2CO3 to tailing weight ratios of 10 wt.%. However, in the case of sample of coal tailing with 20 wt.% Na2CO3 added, nepheline(Na2O·Al2O3·2SiO2) was produced during the re-sintering(2nd sintering) at 1,100 ℃. From the results, the suitable addition amount of Na2CO3 for glassification of coal tailing was found around 10 wt.%.
A glass-ceramics material of composition %SiO_2$: 38.50, $Al_2O_3$: 26.00, $Na_2O$: 18.00, CaO: 6.00, MgO: 4.00, $TiO_2$: 7.50 was strengthened by coating a series of glazes$(SiO_2-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-CaO-PbO-Na_2O-)$, which has lower thermal expansion coefficient than that of the glass-ceramics. The thermal expansion coefficient of the glazes ranges $80~90{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$, whereas that of the glass-ceramics is $115{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$. The glass-ceramics was identified to be composed of nepheline, carnegieite low form, and meta sodium silicate crystal by X-ray diffraction phase analysis. The glaze, having lower melting point and appropriate thermal expansion coefficient, was tried to be stable and good at secondary heat treatment.
The adsorption performance of lead ion was studied using five zeolites (Na-P1, sodalite (SOD), analcime (ANA), nepheline hydrate (JBW), cancrinite (CAN)) synthesized from Jeju scoria. The adsorption performances of lead ion decreased in the order of Na-P1 > SOD > ANA > JBW > CAN. These results showed that the synthetic zeolite with a higher cationic exchange capacity showed a higher adsorption performance. The uptake of lead ion by synthetic zeolites were described by Freundlich model better than Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetics of lead ion by synthetic zeolites fitted the pseudo 2nd order kinetics better than pseudo 1st order kinetics. The effective diffusion coefficients of lead ion by synthetic zeolites were ten times higher than the zeolite A synthesized from coal fly ash.

The glass-ceramics made from the mixture of coal bottom ash, produced from a thermal power plant mixed with $Na_2O$ and $Li_2O$ was fabricated and their crystallization behavior was studied using a non-isothermal analyzing method. The temperature for 50% crystallization was higher than the exothermic peak temperature $T_p$ at DTA curve and the quickest crystallization temperature was much the same as $T_p$ as identified from the relationships of crystallized fraction and crystallization rate with temperature. By using Kissinger equation describing a crystallization behavior, the activation energy (262 kJ/mol), the Avrami constant (1.7) and the frequency ($5.7{\times}10^{16}/s$) for crystallization were calculated from which the nepheline crystal could be expected as showing an 1~2-dimensional surface crystallization behavior mainly with some bulk crystallization tendency at the same time. The actual observation of microstructure using SEM showed the considerable amount of surface crystals of dendrite and the bulk crystals with low fraction, so the prediction by the Kissinger equation was in accord with the crystallization behavior of glass-ceramics fabricated in this study.
In this paper the conditions of surface crystallization of glass were studied. The basic glass which is apt to crystallize, with $SiO_2$ 72.50, $Al_2O_3$ 5, 00, $Na_2O$ 8.00 $K_2O$ 3.50, CaO 5.00, MgO 3.00, $B_2O_3$ 3.00 Wt% is chosen. The strain point and softening point of this glass is 4$25^{\circ}C$ and 778$^{\circ}C$ each, and between the two temperatures we could get grystal on its surface by immersion in salt baths during some controlled hours. The kind of crystal on the surface of glass was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and the change of the thickness of crystalline layers depending on temperature and time, was surveyed by using optical microscope. The results are as follows; 1. The chloride group is more suitable than sulfate group for the treating salt. 2. In the condition with 50 LiCl.50NaCl at 62$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and with 50 LiCL.20-30 NaCl.30-20 $CaCl_2$ at 72$0^{\circ}C$ for 15-20 min. we could get the best crystalline layers. 3. The crystal was silica-O and petalite with a little tridymite and nepheline. 4. The thickness of crystalline layers increased with increasement of temperature and time.
