  • The adsorption strength of liquid crystal molecules on the polymer surface was compared measuring temperature dependence of retardation above Nematic-Isotoropic transition temperature ($T_{NI}$). The relationship between surface order parameter and adsorption strength on the polymer surface was discussed.

  • A new photoalignment material PFCPMI, poly[4-(fluorocinnamate)phenylmaleimide], was synthesized and the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer surface. The NLC pretilt angle generated by non-UV filter method on the PFCPMI surface was higher than that of the UV filter method. A good LC alignment by non-UV filter method was observed at $150^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. However, the alignment defect of the NLC by UV filter method was measured above $150^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good LC alignment in NLC using non-UV filter method can be acheived.

  • Liquid crystalline compounds with amine terminal group and related linear and cross-linked liquid crystal polymers with epoxy resin structure were synthesized and characterized to develope matrix materials for polymer dispersed liquid display applications. Both linear and crosslinked side chain type liquid crystal polymers made with aromatic amine mesogens and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether exhibited nematic texture as shown by polarized optical microscope(POM) and their transition temperatures were determined both by DSC and POM. Liquid crystal polymer samples also showed even-odd effect as the spacer length of aromatic amine mesogens were varied, however, the effect was samller than that of low molecular weight mesogens. Changes of nematic-to-isotropic transition($T_{NI}$) of crosslinked type polymer liquid crystals were also disscussed in relation to the concentration change of crosslinking agent 1,10-diaminodecane.

  • We have investigated the anisotropic dispersion force effects for surfaces alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) on rubbed polystyrene (PS) surfaces by unidirection. In microphotographs an of the textures, we obtained the nematic (N) LCs are shown to align in both direction parallel and perpendicular to the rubbing for region up to medium rubbing, however to align in the direction perpendicular to the rubbing for strong rubbing region. We suggest that the anisotropic dispersion force is very important rather than macro-surface groove effect to uniform alignment of LCs. We also measured the temperature dependence of extrapolation length of 5CB on rubbed PS surfaces for strong rubbing. It is shown that the polar anchoring strength of 5CB is very weak on rubbed PS surface compared to the rubbed polyimide (PI) surface.

  • Here we report a photo polymerization-induced hybrid alignment of a nematic liquid crystal cell which can be applied for a roll to roll fabrication process. Predominant polymerization in the vicinity of UV incident front induced a diffusion of monomers toward front slide and anisotropic polymer network was formed parallel to the polarization direction of the UV light. This induced planar alignment of liquid crystals at the front slide. Simultaneously, homeotropic alignment was induced at the bottom slide as the polymers are phase-separated from a bottom slide.

  • Liquid crystal (LC) alignment on $a-SiO_x$ thin film was investigated by means of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and optical transmittance as we varied the deposition temperature and the target-to-substrate distance. LC molecules can be aligned vertically on $a-SiO_x$ film when the stoichiometric parameter x of $a-SiO_x$ is smaller than 1.56, but they can be aligned homogeneously when x is larger than 1.56. We also found that whether liquid crystals can be aligned vertically or homogeneously on $a-SiO_x$ film can be predicted simply by measuring the change in optical transmittance by deposition of $a-SiO_x$ thin film layers.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value of the cell is $0.289{\mu}m$, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than $3{\mu}m$ when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114% for an incident light 550nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7%. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $120^{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.

  • We propose a method to enhance the response time of a twisted nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) cell using an anisotropic polymer. Polymer networks are formed by the phase separation between a LC and a UV-curable polymer. A TN-LC cell is exposed to UV light after the mixture of LC and anisotropic polymer is injected into the TN-LC cell. As a result, turn-off time of a TN-LC cell can be decreased remarkably without any loss of the transmittance. The turn-off time of a TN-LC cell with pure LC was 16 ms, but those of polymer networked TN-LC cells were 12, 11, and 9 ms when the concentration of the polymer was 3, 5, and 10 wt%, respectively. Moreover, by virtue of the polymer network, the backflow effect and the delay time generated during the turn-off process disappeared.

  • We have studied the motion of charged micro-particles that are immersed in a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and controlled by in-plane field. The LC is an anisotropic liquid such that the viscosity of the LC depends on flow direction, phase of the LC, and temperature, which affects the motion of the charged particles under the influence of electric field. This study shows that the motion of charged particles mainly depends on the applied voltage and the LC phase, but does not show any significant influence from the initial alignment of LC, although one may expect directional difference in drag force due to interaction between LC and particle. The viscosity changes due to temperature variations in nematic phase also show no signification influence on particle velocity when compared to the effect from varying in-plane field strength.
