  • An antimicrobial molecule was purified from centipede, Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans L. Koch, by reverse phase-HPLC. Its molecular weight was determined to be 1208.5493 by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Total amino acid composition analysis revealed that it consists of E, G, P, V, L, F, and W. It exhibited a broad antimicrobial spectrum against not only Gram-negative, but also Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, it was found to have an antimicrobial activity against vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE). It may be a useful molecule for a new antibiotic development, especially against drug-resistant bacteria. We suggest that it may playa role in the defense system of this animal. This is the first report of a peptidic antimicrobial substance from centipede.

  • We aim to develop a simple method for simultaneous and quantitative determination of benzoic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid in seeds of Eriobotrya japonica. In addition, antibacterial effect of these three phenolic acids was examined. A basic method is performed on the high performance liquid chromatography system coupled to an UV-detector (230 nm) and reverse phase C-18 column ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$). Each phenolic acid was confirmed via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS system under the multiple-reaction monitoring with negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI(-)) mode. It is demonstrated that the method was could be applied to samples for an analytical study of the phenolic acids. On the other hand, three phenolic acids in seeds of E. japonica exhibited antibacterial effect against several pathogenic bacteria. Of these, benzoic acid was found to have stronger antibacterial effect.

  • Non-LTE calculations, with the non-thermal ionization effects included, indicated that for electron bombardment, the H$\alpha$ line is widely broadened and shows a strong central reversal. Significant enhancements at the line wings of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ are also predicted at the beginning of the impulsive phase of flares. For the proton bombardment, no strong broadening and no large central reversal are expected. However, due to proton-hydrogen charge exchange, the enhancements at the red wings of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ lines at the early impulsive phase of flares are significant. Our results show that the electron beam can also in some cases generate visible and UV continuum emission in white-light flares. However, at the onset phase, a negative flare may appear within several seconds, due to the increase of the H- opacity. Another spectroscopic signature of energetic particles, i.e. the impact polarization of atomic lines, is also mentioned.

  • A Sputter ion Plating(SIP) system with a r.f. coil electrode and the Facing Target Sputter(FTS) source was designed for high-quality thin film formation. The rf discharge was combined with DC facing target sputtering in order to enhance ionization degree of a sputtered atoms. The energy of ions incident on the substrate depended on the health potential of DC biased substrate. The mean impact ion energy increased with negative bias voltage and rf power. The adhesive force of the TiN film formed was in the range of 30$\sim$50N, and markedly influenced by substrate bias voltage.

  • This paper deals with the prebreakdown phenomena of $SF_{6}$ gap stressed by non-oscillating and oscillating impulse voltages in a strong inhomogeneous field disturbed by a fred needle shaped-protrusion on the earth-side electrode. The breakdown voltage-time characteristics were measured for both positive and negative polarities and over the gas pressure range of 0.1∼0.5 MPa, and the temporal developments of the 77breakdown were observed by a shunt of 50 n. The dependence of the leader stopping time on the gas pressure were obtained. The local field enhancement due to the space charges, which is produced by the streamer corona, has influence with the electrical breakdown of the test gap. The test streamer corona is oxy a necessary condition for the electrical breakdown and the subsequent ionization activities launch the leader at the local field region.

  • The mechanism of striation in the coplanar- and matrix-type plasma display panel (PDP) cells has been studied using the particle-in-cell Monte-Carlo Collision (PIC-MCC) model. The striation formation is related to the ionization energy of neutral atoms and the well-like deformation of space potential by space charge distribution. Negative wall charge accumulation by electrons on the MgO surface of the anode region is also one of the key factors for the formation of striation. The clearness of the striation phenomenon in PIC-MCC code in comparison with fluid code can be explained by using nonlocal electron kinetic effect.

  • Based on experimental and theoretical analyses, we suggested a new possibility that the CVD diamond films grow not by the atomic unit but by the charged clusters containing a few hundreds of carbon atoms, which form spontaneously in the gas phase [J. Crysta] Growth 62 (1996) 55]. These hypothetical negatively-charged clusters were experimentally confirmed under a typical hot-filament diamond CVD process. Thin film growth by charged clusters or gas phase colloids of a few nanometers was also confirmed in Si and ZrO₂ CVD and appears to be general in many other CVD processes. Many puzzling phenomena in the CVD process such as selective deposition and nanowire growth could be explained by the deposition behavior of charged clusters. Charged clusters were shown to generate and contribute at least partially to the film deposition by thermal evaporation. Origin of charging at the relatively low temperature was explained by the surface ionization described by Saha-Langmuir equation. The hot surface with a high work function favors positive charging of clusters while that of a low work function favors negative charging.

  • In this ppaer, temeprature dependent transport and heat transport models have been incorperated to the two dimensional device simulator SNU-2D provides a solid bse for nonisothermal device simulation. As an example to study the nonisothermal problem. we consider SOI MOSFET's I-V characteristics have been simulated and compared with the measurements. It is shown that negative slopes in the Ids-Vds characteristics are casused by the temperature dependence of the saturation velocity and the degradation of the temperature dependence mobility. Also it is shown that the kink effect occurs when impact ionization near the drain produces a buildup of holes in this isolated device island, and the hysteresis is caused by the creation of holes in the channel and their flow to the source.

  • Non-genotoxic diamines 2,2'-dimethyl-5,5'-dipropoxybenzidine and 5,5'-dipropoxy-benzidine were employed as potential alternatives to benzidine in the synthesis and evaluation of new direct dyes for cotton. Assessment of the resultant dyes indicated that both diamines can be used to prepare new direct dyes having colors and fastness properties that make them comparable to commercial direct dyes, and that the structures of the new direct dyes can be confirmed by negative ion electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS). The mutagenic properties of new direct dyes were established using the standard Ames Salmonella mammalian mutagenicity assay.

  • The spatial distribution of the optogalvanic (OG) signal in argon at the 801.489 nm ($1s_5-2p_8$ transition at the metastable level in Paschen notation) was investigated in the radial direction of a hollow cathode discharge tube. The results of this experiment showed that the OG signal amplitude decreases in accordance with the following two conditions; first, the level of discharge current and second, the distance from the cathode dark space. These results can be quantified by analyzing the electron density profile along the discharge regions, which can directly influence the collisional ionization induced by electron impact.
