  • Introduction: Gutkha contains harmful and carcinogenic chemicals and oral cancer caused by tobacco usage has been reported as a major preventable cause of death worldwide by the World Health Organization. The Telangana state government implemented a ban on gutkha usage starting in 2013 but how effective this ban has been remains unclear. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the actual impact of the gutkha ban on users and vendors. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among gutkha users and tobacco vendors in Ranga Reddy district, Telangana. Based on a pilot study the sample size was determined as 368 and 384 for users and vendors respectively. Two separate questionnaires were administered to these groups. The parameters studied mainly included knowledge regarding the ban, and its impact. Results: About 49.1% of the users were aware of the ban on gutkha. Newspapers were the main source of information regarding the ban as reported by 45.3% of users. After the ban, 29.8% of gutkha users switched to other tobacco products. Awareness of health hazards and non-availability of gutkha was the most important reason stated for quitting or reducing consumption. Conclusion: The perspective of ban when visualized from the users point of view depicted a negative impact while the vendors portrayed a positive impact. Considering the addictive potential of the ingredients of gutkha, recording the effects of the ban on regular consumers and determining whether they can still obtain the products by illicit trade, would be noteworthy for implementation of strict rules.

  • The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty was ratified in 1991. With the aim to ensure comprehensive protection of the Antarctic environment, it contains provisions on environmental protection and conservation of the Antarctic area, including provisions for Environmental Impact Assessment. Environmental Impact Assessment is a method used to predict environmental impacts at an early stage in project planning and design, and find ways to mitigate or prevent adverse impacts in order to maintain balance between development activities and environmental conservation. Internationally, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in the Antarctic is classified into three types - preliminary, Initial, and Comprehensive - based on the environmental impacts of the proposed activities. In case of the Preliminary Environmental Review (PER), proposed activity may proceed in accordance to the national procedures and drafting of an outline. However, Initial (IEE) and Comprehensive Environmental Evaluation (CEE) assess and verify the impacts of the proposed activity, and require methods or alternatives for mitigating or eliminating negative impacts on the environment. Although Korea's Act of 'Activities and Environmental Protection in Antarctica' also includes provisions on EIA for activities in Antarctica, there are obvious contrasts with the EIAs currently being conducted in Korea, in regards to deciding the level of EIA through screening and identifying key issues for assessment through scoping. In order to implement the proper EIA, more improved methods for drafting and reviewing the EIA to Antarctica in Korea are necessary.

  • Poly(butylenes terephthalate) have made large strides in applications of injection, extrusion, and molding material due to their excellent thermal resistance and appropriate mechanical properties. However, PBT was not hard polymer but a soft polymer which caused low absorption of external energy and the defect of being easily broken with the strong impact. Thus, the electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation doses from 100 to 1,000 kGy for enhancing the properties. The decreases of $T_m$, $T_c$, and enthalpy were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The improvement in the impact strength of PBT was clearly observed as the absorbed dose was increased. This was probably due to the 3-dimensional network structures, resulting in increasing the absorption of impact energy. In addition, the wear properties had increased at higher than 300 kGy. The negative deviation of weight loss confirmed the improvement of the wear properties of PBT, as evidenced by SEM observation on the wear surfaces.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of childbirth on socioeconomic status changes of women. Data were collected from Korean Health Panel (2008-2015). A difference-in-differences model with propensity score matching was applied to assess the impact of childbirth on socioeconomic status changes. As a result, variables showing significant differences in the interaction terms indicating the impact of birth were the savings, economic activity, and occupational status. The impact of birth were significant in decreasing the amount of savings and negatively affecting women's economic activities, but in increasing the probability of full-time and regular employees in occupational status. Childbirth appears to have a negative impact on the home economics and socioeconomic status of women. The belief that home economies can be stabilized even after childbirth should be established, and a long-term and sustained support plan should be set up to realize this belief.

  • Objective: The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of three types of different running shoes with different properties on impact variables (PVRGF and VLR) and the lower extremity joint's dynamic stability variables (LyEs of DPA, IEA, FEA, DPAV, IEAV, and FEAV) during running. Method: The participants in this research were 12 males (Age: 22.0 ± 3.3 years, Height: 177.2 ± 4.1 cm, Weight: 74.3 ± 9.6 kg). One type of N company's running shoes and two types (FA, FB) of F company's running shoes were used. As for the properties of the running shoes, thickness (mm), dwell time (ms), peak acceleration (m/s2), and energy return (%) were measured. The motions running at 3.5 m/s on a treadmill (Instrumented treadmill, Bertec, USA) wearing each type of running shoes were analyzed. Results: Although the VLR of the thick running shoes (FB) was smaller than that of the other running shoes (N, FA), the LyEs of PVGRF and DPA were larger (p<.05). Even though the running shoes' dwell time (i.e., impact absorption time) and peak acceleration showed a positive correlation with the LyEs of DPAV, IEAV, and FEAV, the energy return showed a negative correlation (p<.05). Conclusion: Our results indicated that the running shoes with excellent impact absorption function are predicted to be suitable for running beginners who need to reduce the burden of the lower extremity joint during running. The running shoes with excellent energy return are expected to be suitable for mid-and long-distance running elite athletes or marathoners to whom stability and consistency are essential during running.

  • To investigate the effect of snowfall on the traffic of general roads in Gangwon-do, case analysis was performed in Gangneung, Pyeongchang, and Chuncheon using ASOS (Automated Synoptic Observing System) snowfall data and VDS (Vehicle Detector System) traffic data. First, we analyzed how much the traffic volume and speed decrease in snowfall cases on regional roads compared to non-snow cases, and the characteristics of monthly reduction due to snowfall were investigated. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed to quantitatively grasp the effect of snowfall on traffic volume and speed, and sensitivity tests for snowfall intensity and cumulative snowfall were performed. The results showed that the amount of snowfall caused decrease both in the traffic volume and speed from usual (non-snowfall) condition. However, the trend was different by region: The decrease rate in traffic volume was in the order of Gangneung (17~22%), Chuncheon (14~17%), and Pyeongchang (11~14%). The decrease rate in traffic speed was in the order of Chuncheon (9~10%), Gangneung (8~9%), Pyeongchang (5~6%). No significant results were found in the monthly decrease rate analysis. In all regions, traffic volume and speed showed a negative correlation with snowfall. It was confirmed that the greater the amount of traffic entering the road, the greater the slope of the trend line indicating the change in snowfall due to the traffic volume. As a result of the sensitivity test for snowfall intensity and cumulative snowfall, the snowfall information at intervals of 6-hours was the most significant.

  • Cyber attacks on the aviation weapon system, a state-of-the-art asset, have become a reality and are approaching as a constant threat. However, due to the characteristics of embedded software of the current aviation weapon system, it is managed and operated without connection to the network in peacetime, so the response management to cyber attacks is relatively weak. Therefore, when a cyber attack becomes a reality, it is urgent to prepare and evaluate measures for the adverse effects that such attack will have on the execution of the Air Tasking Order(ATO). In this paper, we propose a framework for operational impact assessment in order to avoid confusion in ATO execution and systematic response to cyber attacks on aviation weapons systems. The proposed framework is designed to minimize the negative impact on operations against cyber attacks that may occur under no warning by analyzing the impact on air operations for each aviation weapon system and standardizing countermeasures for this. In addition, it supports the operational commander to make a quick decision to command for the execution of the operation even in a situation where a cyber attack occurs.
