A female English bulldog was gave birth two neonates by cesarean section on the sixty one days after mating, but both neonates were died soon after birth. The bodies of neonates were diagnosed using radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and necropsy immediately after death. Both neonates had caudal regression syndrome, butterfly vertebra, hydrocephalus, umbilical hernia, cleft palate and bow-legged hind-limb. At necropsy, neonates had mild fetal anasarca, cleft lip and the skull was remained non-union. At thoracic cavity, only three ribs and thoracic spines were existed and patent ductus arteriosus was found. At abnormal cavity, the renal ectopia was found with abnormal morphology. In the present case, those English bulldog neonates with multiple congenital malformation syndromes seriously suffered vertebral column anomalies and that may induced by neural tube defects in during embryonic period. To prevent congenital malformation occurring in English bulldog, further in depth studies are needed for the breed specific genetic diversity and for the reason of behind genetic abnormality in these breed.
Intravenous and oral acute toxicity tests in ICR mice and SD rats and percutaneous acute toxicity tests in SD rats and NZW rabbits were conducted to evaluate the toxicity of DA-5018 and DA-5018 cream, respectively Clinical signs observed in mice and rats after the administration of DA-5018 were similar regardless of administration route. The observed clinical signs were jumping, wild running, lacrimation, ataxia, reddening of extremities and ears, ventral or lateral recumbency, respiratory distress, cyanosis, convulsion and death. Pulmonary enlargement and hemorrhage were observed in the animals died immediately after the dosing of DA-5018. At terminal necropsy, pulmonary enlargement and hemorrhage, corneal opacity and focal scabbing and depilation around nose were seen. LD$_{50}$ Values of DA-5018 are 11.5 mg/kg (mice, male), 12.6 mg/kg (mice, female), 88.3 mg/kg (rat, male) and 73.2 mg/kg (rat, female) in oral toxicity tests and 11.0 mg/kg (mice, male), 18.7 mg/kg (mice, female), 0.12 mg/kg (rat, male) and 0.32 mg/kg (rat, female) in i.v. toxicity tests. In the percutaneous acute toxicity tests of DA-5018 cream, no deaths occured in all the tested groups during 14-day observation period. There were also no abnormalities in the general conditions, body weight changes and on necropsy findings in all groups. LD$_{50}$ values of 0.1 ~0.9% DA-5018 creams in male and female rats and rabbits are >2000 mg/kg./kg.
An 11-year-old mixed breed male dog was presented with a thoracoabdominal wall mass of 3-year duration. Initial tentative diagnosis of osteosarcoma was made. Despite chemotherapy treatment, 72 days following the date of presentation, the dog was euthanized. Based upon necropsy and histopathologic findings, the tumor was definitely diagnosed as a combined type osteosarcoma of the rib. At necropsy examination, the tumor extended the left kidney and diaphragm, but distant metastasis was not found. The tumor's weight was 2.3kg and that was 38.3% of the dog's weight. This case report describes the clinicopathological, computed tomographic, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings of extensive rib osteosarcoma in a small breed dog.
Necropsy was performed on a total of twenty three either white leghorn or ogol chickens which were more than 150 weeks of age. Among twenty three chickens examined, fifteen chickens were laying and the rest eight chickens were non-laying. On necropsy, neoplastic mass in the five chickens among non-laying chickens was found. These neoplastic masses were present mostly in the ovaries and one case in the liver and characterized by multifocal to coalescing 1 to 5 mm tan firm nodular formation. On histopathology, ovarian adenocarcinoma with widespread abdominal seeding and hepatic metastasis was diagnosed in the three chickens. Oviductal leiomyoma was also found in two chickens that had a focal well-demarcated nodules in the oviduct. Taken together, the number with ovarian adenocarcinoma among non-laying chickens over 150 week old was 37.5%. As most animal species do rarely develop ovarian tumors, the high rate of spontaneous ovarian adenocarcinoma in non-laying hen suggest that the hen is a proper model for human ovarian cancer study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute (4 hours) and repeated-dose (6 hours a day, 5 days a week, 4 weeks) toxic effects of 1-hexene on Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats which were treated by inhalation. The results were as follows; 1. The median lethal concentration(LC$_{50}$) was estimated 52,694 ppm (confidence limit 95%; 49,494~55,447 ppm) in acute inhalation. Abnormal clinical signs related to the 1-Hexene were not observed with the acute inhalation dose. Cross findings of necropsy revealed on evidence of specific toxicity related to the 1-hexene. II. By repeated inhalation exposure the body weight of male were more or less reduced by the dose of 2,500 ppm and 5,000 ppm compared with control group. However there were no significant variation hematology and blood biochemistry for the exposed rats compared with the control rats. Abnormal clinical signs and gross findings of necropsy related to the 1-hexene were not shown. In conclusion when we exposed 1-hexene to SD rats for 4 weeks, 5 days per week, 6 hours per day, the Lowest observed effect level (LOEL) was over 2,500 ppm and Non observed effect level (NOEL) was below 500 ppm.
There was a mass outbreak of death caused by transport stress and malnutrition in Japanese macaques imported from Japan at a farm stock in Korea, which were diagnosed on the ground of history taking, clinical finding, hematological examination and necropsy. Twenty eight Japanese macaques imported from Japan died suddenly from the 4th day after arrival in a farm. These animals were confined very small cages individually and lose the appetite for 10 days from shipping. Main clinical findings observed from alive Japanese macaques consisted of hypothermia and dehydration. On hematological observation for typical 4 cases showed increased erythrocytes and packed cell volume. On serum biochemical examination for 3 cases showed hypoglycemia, whereas blood urea nitrogen, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were increased. On necropsy for 3 cases, hemorrhage and congestion were observed on the lung and the walls of stomach and intestine were thinned. Histologically, hemorrhagic pneumonia and enteritis with loss of villi were seen. The death of these animal was caused by poor management during transport, which was resulted in transport stress and malnutrition.
The antibiotic chemotherapy produces sometimes side effects and fails to eliminate bacterial infection. The occurrence of strains resistant to antibiotics would be expected to increase, and it is nowadays important to search for non-antibiotic substances. We are aimed to evaluate the effects of Torilis fructus extracts against enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) in Piglets. The piglets were divided with three groups; Negative control group, E. coli-infected positive control group, and the Torilis fructus extracts treated group with E. coli infection. During the study period, we compared clinical signs, weight increase rate, fecal scores, gross findings between the treated group and non treated group. After necropsy, necropsy findings and histopathological findings were conducted with the comparison between the groups. As the results of this study, the Torilis fructus extracts additive showed the effects on the suppression of E. coli-induced lesions. On the basis of this study results, our data suggest that the Torilis fructus extracts additive have the antimicrobial effects. The Torilis fructus extracts additive could be used as the alternative material for antimicrobial feed additives.
Dead oscars (Astronotus ocellatus) were presented for necropsy in January, 2005. Oscars, which had been reared densely, were dead in large quantities. At necropsy, they were severely infected by Dactylogyrus spp. We requested for the oscar samples which had been raised in the same water tank. Two of them were sacrificed and necropsied. At the microscopic examination, we verified dactylogyrosis of oscars. The other oscars were treated by praziquantel. Treatment was started with a dosage of 2.5 mg/L. From a second day, we treated 5.0 mg/L every two days during 4 days. At sixth day, No Dactylogyrus flukes were found but only larvae were existed. After 2 weeks without additional medication, both Dactylogyrus flukes and larvae were eliminated.
