  • k-nearest neighbor (K-NN) is a well-known classification algorithm, being feature space-based on nearest-neighbor training examples in machine learning. However, K-NN, as we know, is a lazy learning method. Therefore, if a K-NN-based system very much depends on a huge amount of history data to achieve an accurate prediction result for a particular task, it gradually faces a processing-time performance-degradation problem. We have noticed that many researchers usually contemplate only classification accuracy. But estimation speed also plays an essential role in real-time prediction systems. To compensate for this weakness, this paper proposes correlation coefficient-based clustering (CCC) aimed at upgrading the performance of K-NN by leveraging processing-time speed and plurality rule-based density (PRD) to improve estimation accuracy. For experiments, we used real datasets (on breast cancer, breast tissue, heart, and the iris) from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository. Moreover, real traffic data collected from Ojana Junction, Route 58, Okinawa, Japan, was also utilized to lay bare the efficiency of this method. By using these datasets, we proved better processing-time performance with the new approach by comparing it with classical K-NN. Besides, via experiments on real-world datasets, we compared the prediction accuracy of our approach with density peaks clustering based on K-NN and principal component analysis (DPC-KNN-PCA).

  • Purpose: This paper proposes a density adaptive grid algorithm for the k-NN regression model to reduce the computation time for large datasets without significant prediction accuracy loss. Methods: The proposed method utilizes the concept of the grid with centroid to reduce the number of reference data points so that the required computation time is much reduced. Since the grid generation process in this paper is based on quantiles of original variables, the proposed method can fully reflect the density information of the original reference data set. Results: Using five real-life datasets, the proposed k-NN regression model is compared with the original k-NN regression model. The results show that the proposed density adaptive grid-based k-NN regression model is superior to the original k-NN regression in terms of data reduction ratio and time efficiency ratio, and provides a similar prediction error if the appropriate number of grids is selected. Conclusion: The proposed density adaptive grid algorithm for the k-NN regression model is a simple and effective model which can help avoid a large loss of prediction accuracy with faster execution speed and fewer memory requirements during the testing phase.

  • Traffic speed is an important measure in transportation. It can be employed for various purposes, including traffic congestion detection, travel time estimation, and road design. Consequently, accurate speed prediction is essential in the development of intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, we present an analysis and speed prediction of a certain road section in Busan, South Korea. In previous works, only historical data of the target link are used for prediction. Here, we extract features from real traffic data by considering the neighboring links. After obtaining the candidate features, linear regression, model tree, and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) are employed for both feature selection and speed prediction. The experiment results show that k-NN outperforms model tree and linear regression for the given dataset. Compared to the other predictors, k-NN significantly reduces the error measures that we use, including mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE).

  • In order to make up the deficiencies of the existing research results which cannot effectively deal with the nearest neighbor query based on the line segments in obstacle space, the k nearest neighbor query method of line segment in obstacle space is proposed and the STA_OLkNN algorithm under the circumstance of static obstacle data set is put forward. The query process is divided into two stages, including the filtering process and refining process. In the filtration process, according to the properties of the line segment Voronoi diagram, the corresponding pruning rules are proposed and the filtering algorithm is presented. In the refining process, according to the relationship of the position between the line segments, the corresponding distance expression method is put forward and the final result is obtained by comparing the distance. Theoretical research and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively deal with the problem of k nearest neighbor query of the line segment in the obstacle environment.

  • As human activities in Korea are spread throughout the mountains, forest fires often affect residential areas, infrastructure, and other facilities. Hence, it is necessary to detect fire-damaged areas quickly to enable support and recovery. Remote sensing is the most efficient tool for this purpose. Fire damage detection experiments were conducted on the east coast of Korea. Because this area comprises a mixture of forest and artificial land cover, data with low resolution are not suitable. We used Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (MSI) data, which provide adequate temporal and spatial resolution, and the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm in this study. Six bands of Sentinel-2 MSI and two indices of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized burn ratio (NBR) were used as features for kNN classification. The kNN classifier was trained using 2,000 randomly selected samples in the fire-damaged and undamaged areas. Outliers were removed and a forest type map was used to improve classification performance. Numerous experiments for various neighbors for kNN and feature combinations have been conducted using bi-temporal and uni-temporal approaches. The bi-temporal classification performed better than the uni-temporal classification. However, the uni-temporal classification was able to detect severely damaged areas.

  • Nearest neighbor query retrieves nearest located target objects, and is very frequently used in mobile environment. In this paper we propose a novel neatest neighbor query processing technique that is able to retrieve nearest located target object from the user who is continuously moving with a direction. The proposed method retrieves objects using the direction property of moving object as well as euclidean distance to target object. The proposed method is applicable to traffic information system, travel information system, and location-based recommendation system which require retrieving nearest located object.

  • Location-based services (LBSs) are expected to process a large number of spatial queries, such as shortest path and k-nearest neighbor queries that arrive simultaneously at peak periods. Deploying more LBS servers to process these simultaneous spatial queries is a potential solution. However, this significantly increases service operating costs. Recently, batch processing solutions have been proposed to process a set of queries using shareable computation. In this study, we investigate the problem of batch processing moving k-nearest neighbor (MkNN) queries in dynamic spatial networks, where the travel time of each road segment changes frequently based on the traffic conditions. LBS servers based on one-query-at-a-time processing often fail to process simultaneous MkNN queries because of the significant number of redundant computations. We aim to improve the efficiency algorithmically by processing MkNN queries in batches and reusing sharable computations. Extensive evaluation using real-world roadmaps shows the superiority of our solution compared with state-of-the-art methods.

  • The Voronoi diagram (VD) is the most suitable mechanism to find the nearest neighbor (NN) for mobile clients. In NN query processing, it is important to reduce the query response time, since a late query response may contain out-of-date information. In this paper, we study the issue of location dependent information services (LDISs) using a VD. To begin our study, we first introduce a broadcast-based spatial query processing methods designed to support NN query processing. In further sections, we introduce a generic method for location-dependent sequential prefetching and caching. The performance of this scheme is studied in different simulated environments. The core contribution of this research resides in our analytical proof and experimental results.

  • TRecently, there has been enormous growth in the amount of commercial and scientific data, such as protein sequences, retail transactions, and web-logs. Such datasets consist of sequence data that have an inherent sequential nature. In this Paper, we study how to classify these sequence datasets. There are several kinds techniques for data classification such as decision tree induction, Bayesian classification and K-NN etc. In our approach, we use a K-NN algorithm for classifying sequences. In addition, we propose a new similarity measure to compute the similarity between two sequences and an efficient method for measuring similarity.
