Optical imaging modalities with properties of real-time, non-invasive, in vivo, and high resolution for image-guided surgery have been widely studied. In this review, we introduce two optical imaging systems, that could be the core of image-guided surgery and introduce the system configuration, implementation, and operation methods. First, we introduce the optical coherence tomography (OCT) system implemented by our research group. This system is implemented based on a swept-source, and the system has an axial resolution of 11 ㎛ and a lateral resolution of 22 ㎛. Second, we introduce a fluorescence imaging system. The fluorescence imaging system was implemented based on the absorption and fluorescence wavelength of indocyanine green (ICG), with a light-emitting diode (LED) light source. To confirm the performance of the two imaging systems, human malignant melanoma cells were injected into BALB/c nude mice to create a xenograft model and using this, OCT images of cancer and pathological slide images were compared. In addition, in a mouse model, an intravenous injection of indocyanine green was used with a fluorescence imaging system to detect real-time images moving along blood vessels and to detect sentinel lymph nodes, which could be very important for cancer staging. Finally, polarization-sensitive OCT to find the boundaries of cancer in real-time and real-time image-guided surgery using a developed contrast agent and fluorescence imaging system were introduced.
Background and Objectives Although lasers have been widely applied in tissue treatment, the light penetration depth in tissues is limited by the tissue turbidity and affected by its absorption and scattering characteristics. This study investigated the effect of using an optical clearing agent (OCA) on tissue to improve the therapeutic effect of 1064 nm wavelength laser light by reducing the heat generated on the skin surface and increasing the penetration depth. Materials and Methods A diode laser (λ = 1064 nm) was applied to a porcine specimen with and without OCA to investigate the penetration depth of the laser light and temperature distribution. A numerical simulation using the finite element method was performed to investigate the temperature distribution of the specimen compared to ex-vivo experiments using a thermocouple and double-integrating sphere to measure the temperature profile and optical properties of the tissue, respectively. Results Simulation results showed a decrease in tissue surface temperature with increased penetration depth when the OCA was applied. Furthermore, both absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with the application of OCA. In ex-vivo experiments, temperatures decreased for the tissue surface and the fat layer with the OCA, but not for the muscle layer. Conclusion The use of an OCA may be helpful for reducing surface heat generation and enhance the light penetration depth in various near-infrared laser treatments.

The use of multi-spectral cameras is essential for day and night pedestrian detection. In this paper, a color camera and a thermal imaging infrared camera were used to detect pedestrians near a crosswalk for 24 hours at an intersection with a high risk of traffic accidents. For pedestrian detection, the YOLOv5 object detector was used, and the detection performance was improved by using color images and thermal images at the same time. The proposed system showed a high performance of 0.940 mAP in the day/night multi-spectral (color and thermal image) pedestrian dataset obtained from the actual crosswalk site.
Fundus images can reflect ocular diseases and systemic diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Thus, research on fundus-detection equipment is of great importance. The fundus camera has been widely used as a kind of noninvasive detection equipment. Most existing devices can only obtain two-dimensional (2D) retinal-image information, yet the fundus of the human eye also has spectral characteristics. The fundus has many pigments, and their different distributions in the eye lead to dissimilar tissue penetration for light waves, which can reflect the corresponding fundus structure. To obtain more abundant information and improve the detection level of equipment, a snapshot nonmydriatic fundus imaging spectral system, including fundus-imaging spectrometer and illumination system, is studied in this paper. The system uses a microlens array to realize snapshot technology; information can be obtained from only a single exposure. The system does not need to dilate the pupil. Hence, the operation is simple, which reduces its influence on the detected object. The system works in the visible and near-infrared bands (550-800 nm), with a volume less than 400 mm × 120 mm × 75 mm and a spectral resolution better than 6 nm.
The micro-Kjeldahl method, a common technique for analyzing crude proteins, is time-consuming and dangerous due to the employment of reagents such as sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. However, a Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectrophotometer analysis can be completed in under a minute after simple pre-processing if data has been gathered using sufficient reference material in advance. Furthermore, the use of safe reagents in this technique ensures the safety of the experimenter and the environment. In addition, a portable FT-NIR spectrophotometer enables real-time measurement at processing or distribution sites and has recently gained popularity. The standard errors of calibration and regression (r2) for the calibration result for estimating the crude protein content of dried laver were 0.9775 and 1.2526, respectively. The standard error of prediction was 1.1814, and the r2 was 0.9303 in the validation results, which was a good level. In the present study, a method for predicting the crude protein content of dried laver using an FT-NIR spectrophotometer in the range of 29%-40% crude protein content has been reported.
Halide perovskites are emerging materials for next-generation display applications, thanks to their narrow emission linewidth and band gap tunability, capable of covering the entire range of visible light. Despite their short period of research, perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have shown rapid progress in device external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the near-infrared (NIR), red, and green emission wavelengths, and the record EQE has exceeded over 20 %. However there has been limited progress with blue emission compared to the red and green counterparts. In this review, the current status and challenges of blue PeLEDs are introduced, and strategies to produce spectrally stable blue PeLEDs are discussed. The strategies include 1) a mixed halide system in the form of 3-dimensional (3D) perovskites, 2) colloidal perovskite nanocrystals and 3) low dimensional perovskites, known as quasi-2D perovskites. In the mixed halide system, previous reports based on the compositional engineering of 3D perovskites to reduce spectral instability (i.e., halide segregation) will be discussed. Since spectral instability issue originate from the mixed halide composition in perovskites, the two other strategies are based on enlarging the band gap with a single halide composition. Finally, the prospects for each strategy are discussed, for further improvement in spectrally stable blue PeLEDs.

Sensor dataset for autonomous driving is one of the essential components as the deep learning approaches are widely used. However, most driving datasets are focused on typical environments such as sunny or cloudy. In addition, most datasets deal with color images and lidar. In this paper, we propose a driving dataset with multi-spectral images and lidar in adverse weather conditions such as snowy, rainy, smoky, and dusty. The proposed data acquisition system has 4 types of cameras (color, near-infrared, shortwave, thermal), 1 lidar, 2 radars, and a navigation sensor. Our dataset is the first dataset that handles multi-spectral cameras in adverse weather conditions. The Proposed dataset is annotated as 2D semantic labels, 3D semantic labels, and 2D/3D bounding boxes. Many tasks are available on our dataset, for example, object detection and driveable region detection. We also present some experimental results on the adverse weather dataset.
Extinction curves observed toward individual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) usually show a steep rise toward Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) wavelengths and can be described by the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-like dust model. This feature suggests the dominance of small dust grains of size a < 0.1 ㎛ in the local environment of AGN, but the origin of such small grains is unclear. In this paper, we aim to explain this observed feature by applying the RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD) to model the extinction of AGN radiation from FUV to Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelengths. We find that in the intense radiation field of AGN, large composite grains of size a > 0.1 ㎛ are significantly disrupted to smaller sizes by RATD up to dRATD > 100 pc in the polar direction and dRATD ~ 10 pc in the torus region. Consequently, optical-MIR extinction decreases, whereas FUV-near-Ultraviolet extinction increases, producing a steep far-UV rise extinction curve. The resulting total-to selective visual extinction ratio thus significantly drops to RV < 3.1 with decreasing distances to AGN center due to the enhancement of small grains. The dependence of RV with the efficiency of RATD will help us to study the dust properties in the AGN environment via photometric observations. In addition, we suggest that the combination of the strength between RATD and other dust destruction mechanisms that are responsible for destroying very small grains of a <0.05 ㎛ is the key for explaining the dichotomy observed "SMC" and "gray" extinction curve toward many AGN.

Six images of IRC+10216 taken by the Hubble Space Telescope at three epochs in 2001, 2011, and 2016 are compared in the rest frame of the central carbon star. An accurate astrometry has been achieved with the help of Gaia Data Release 2. The positions of the carbon star in the individual epochs are determined using its known proper motion, defining the rest frame of the star. In 2016, a local brightness peak with compact and red nature is detected at the stellar position. A comparison of the color maps between 2016 and 2011 epochs reveals that the reddest spot moved along with the star, suggesting a possibility of its being the dusty material surrounding the carbon star. Relatively red, ambient region is distributed in an Ω shape and well corresponds to the dusty disk previously suggested based on near-infrared polarization observations. In a larger scale, differential proper motion of multiple ring-like pattern in the rest frame of the star is used to derive the average expansion velocity of transverse wind components, resulting in ~12.5 km s-1 (d/123 pc), where d is the distance to IRC+10216. Three dimensional geometry is implied from its comparison with the line-of-sight wind velocity determined from half-widths of submillimeter emission line profiles of abundant molecules. Uneven temporal variations in brightness for different searchlight beams and anisotropic distribution of extended halo are revisited in the context of the stellar light illumination through a porous envelope with postulated longer-term variations for a period of 10 years.

We present results from our long-term observing campaign, using the NASA IRTF at Maunakea, to obtain 2 - 4 ㎛ spectra of 118 red point sources in the line of sight to the Galactic Center (GC). Our sample is largely composed of point sources selected from near- and mid-infrared photometry, but also includes a number of massive young stellar objects. Many of these sources show high foreground extinction as shown by deep 3.4 ㎛ aliphatic hydrocarbon absorption feature, which is a characteristic of the diffuse ISM and comes from the long line of sight through the diffuse medium toward the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the central 300 pc region of the GC. The deep 3.1 ㎛ H2O ice absorption band coming from the local, dense material in the GC CMZ suggests that most sources are likely located in the GC CMZ. A few of these sources show weak CCH3OH ice absorption at 3.535 ㎛, which can provide a strong constraint on the CCH3OH ice formation in the unique environment of the CMZ. From the best-fitting models, the optical depths of these features are determined and used to generate a well-rounded view of the ice composition across the GC CMZ and the spectral characteristics of massive YSOs in the GC.
