Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have been prepared without using surfactants to assess their stability at different time intervals. The synthesized particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of the samples were also investigated. The average particle size was measured to be 12.7 nm even in the polydispersed form. The magnetic and dielectric characteristics of the $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles have also been studied and discussed in detail.
In this study, we evaluated the effect of the type of sewage sludge (digested, non digested) on drying efficiency according to the polymer injection rate. The drying characteristics were shown using a near-infrared ray (NIR) and a microwave. As a result of the drying characteristics with NIR at a polymer dose ratio of 8%, the heating up period is up to 6 minutes after the start of the drying experiment. Afterwards, the constant rate drying period of the digested sludge (A, C and G sites) was 6 minute → 18 minute, showing a rapid decrease in moisture. On the other hand, non digested sludge (B, D, E, F, H, I, J and K sites) showed gradual drying characteristics compared to digested sludge until complete drying (10%). As the polymer dose ratio of 10% and 12%, the heating up period for digested sludge is up to 6 minute after the start of the experiment. Afterwards, the constant rate drying period of the digested sludge was 6 minute → 20 minute, showing a rapid decrease in moisture. On the other hand, the heating up period of non digested sludge was up to 10 minute after the start of the experiment, and the constant rate drying period was 10 minute → 22 minute, which was shorter than digested sludge. As a result of the drying characteristics with microwave at a polymer dose ratio of 8%, 10% and 12%, the constant rate drying period the digested sludge was 4 minute → 20~22 minute, showing a rapid decrease in moisture. On the other hand, non digested sludge of the constant rate drying period was 4 minute → 22~30 minute, which was longer than digested sludge.
Generalized 2D correlation spectroscopy has been applied extensively to the analysis of spectral data sets obtained during the observation of a system under some external perturbation. It is used in various fields of spectroscopy including IR, Raman, UV, fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as chromatography. 2D hetero-spectral correlation analysis compares two completely different types of spectra obtained for a system under the same perturbation. Because of the wide range of applications of this technique, it has become one of the standard analytical techniques for the analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and so on, and for studies of polymers, biomolecules, nanomaterials, etc. In this paper, we will introduce the principle of generalized 2D correlation spectroscopy and its applications that we have studied.

Many non-destructive inspection methods have recently been developed for concrete structures. However, these methods can obtain only physical information of concrete, such as crack depth, delamination or position of reinforcement etc. near its surface. If chemical information is required, sampling and componential analyses may be earned out. Non-destructive method that can detect deterioration factors such as carbonation, chloride content or sulfate attack would be an outstanding innovation in inspection methodologies. In this research, near-infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence analysis were applied for componential analysis for concrete. These methods are very effective compared to traditional methods, therefore, working efficiency and maintenance cost will be improved.
In this paper, we argue that the gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) quasars are special blazars, blazars in dense and dusty gas enviornment. The ROSAT detection rate of GPS quasars is similar to that of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), suggesting that the relativistic jets in GPS quasars are oriented at small angle to the line of sight. Due to strong inverse Compton scattering off infrared photons from dense and dusty nuclear interstellar media in GPS quasars, most of them may have significant soft gamma-ray and X-ray emission, which is consistent with ASCA X-ray observations. Because Compton cooling in GPS quasars is stronger than that in FSRQs, synchrotron emission in GPS quasars may less dominate over thermal emission of the accretion disk and hot dust, hence most GPS quasars show low optical polarization and small variability, consistent with observations. We suggest that it is the significant radio emission of electron/positron pairs produced by the interaction of gamma-rays with the dense gas and dust grains in GPS quasars that makes GPS quasars show steep radio spectra, low radio polarization, and relatively faint VLBI/VLBA cores. Whether GPS quasars are special blazars can be tested by gamma-ray observations with GLAST in the near future, with the detection rate of GPS quasars being similar to that of FSRQs.

In this paper, we investigated the electronic structures and defect states of $SrLaMgTaO_6$ (SLMTO) double perovskite structures by using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Recently, $Eu^{3+}$ doped SLMTO red phosphors have been vigorously investigated due to their higher red emission efficiency compared to commercial white light emitting diodes (W-LED). However, a comprehensive understanding on the electronic structures and defect states of host SLMTO compounds, which are specifically related to the W-LED and photoluminescence (PL), is far from complete. Here, we found that the PL spectra of SLMTO powder compounds sintered at a higher temperature, $1400^{\circ}C$, were weaker in the blue emission regions (at around 400 nm) and became enhanced in near infrared (NIR) regions compared to those sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. To elucidate the difference of the PL spectra, we performed resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (RIXS) at Ta L-edge. Our RIXS result implies that the microscopic origin of different PL spectra is not relevant to the Ta-related defects and oxygen vacancies.
The KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) is a ground-based Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging instrument developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). In this paper, we report the test results of the KASINICS camera optics system which is comprised of a 1-1 Offner relay. We measure that the surface RMS fluctuations of the Offner mirrors are at the level of $10^{-1}-10^{-2}$ of the target wavelengths, showing that the mirrors are sufficiently smooth for NIR observations. The alignment of the Offner optics system has been checked too. Our ray-tracing simulations find that the image quality should not degrade more than the pixel size of the KASINICS ($40{\mu}m$), if a de-centering or a tilt of the Offner mirrors are within 5mm, or $2.5^{\circ}$. Our measurement shows that the de-centering or the tilt of the Offner mirrors are less than 1 mm or $0.5^{\circ}$, assuring that the KASINICS image quality are not affected by the alignment errors. We have also measured that the optics resolution is $20{\mu}m$ and it does not degrade more than 10% over the detector surface area of 14.3 mm ${/times}$ 14.3mm. Overall, we conclude that the KASINICS optics system satisfies the design requirements for NIR imaging observations.
We conducted a fundamental study on geological and rock detection via drone-based hyperspectral imaging on various types of small rock samples and interpreted the obtained information to compare and classify rocks. Further, we performed hyperspectral imaging on ten rocks, and compared the peak data value and reflectance of rocks. Results showed a difference in the reflectance and data value of the rocks, indicating that the rock colors and minerals vary or the reflectance is different owing to the luster of the surface. Among the rocks, limestone used for hyperspectral imaging is grayish white, inverted rock contains various sizes and colors in the dark red matrix, and granite comprises colorless minerals, such as white, black, gray, and colored minerals, resulting in a difference in reflectance. The reflectance of the visible ray range in ten rocks was 16.00~85.78%, in the near infrared ray range, the average reflectance was 23.94~86.43%, the lowest in basalt and highest in marble in both cases. This is because of the pores in basalt, which caused the difference in reflectance.
Epitaxial Gd$_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$luminescent thin films have been grout on Si(III) substrates using ionized Cluster Beam Deposition (ICBD). After the film growing, they were implanted and post annealed to change the crystal structure. The initial growth stage was monitored by using in-situ Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED). The formed crystal structure was identified with X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and Fourier transform infrared (FT-R) spectroscopy. The electronic states variations were investigated by Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS). Photoluminescence (PL), Cathodoluminescence (CL). and Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectrum were used for examining the optical properties. We report the optical property changes depending on crystal structure and the electronic states.

Deep UBVI and $H{\alpha}$ photometry of the ${\eta}$ Carina nebula, one of the brightest nebulae on the sky, was obtained with the CTIO 4m telescope and MOSAIC II CCD Camera to determine the initial mass function down to low-mass (~1 M¤) stars. We modified the spatial variation coefficients in transformation relations of the MOSAIC II CCD. From the cross-identification of optical sources with previous surveys in X-ray, near-infrared, and mid-infrared, a clear PMS sequence is revealed in the optical color-magnitude diagrams down to V=23 mag. Our previous SSO 1m UBVI data for Trumpler 14 (Tr 14) and Trumpler 16 (Tr 16) region, and additional SSO 1m UBVI data for Trumpler 15 (Tr 15) region were combined with the CTIO 4m data to re-examine the reddening law and distance of the young open clusters in the ${\eta}$ Carina nebula. From the new photometric data for Tr 15 region, we report that RV[=AV/E(B-V)], the total-to-selective extinction ratio, decreases from southern part of the nebula (Tr 14 and Tr 16) to northern part (Tr 15) in our field of view.
