  • Recently, there were some successful examples that the laser welding was introduced into production line. However, the spread of laser welding is not sufficient in many industries. There are several reasons why it is difficult to penetrate the laser welding into production lines. Because it is different from reflection, absorption and permeation of laser beam according to material and surface condition. Moreover, there are significant problems in processing such as absorption and scattering of beam by the induced plasma or plume. Therefore, understanding of mechanism on formation of weld defect in laser welding of the laminated core for motor is very important. In this paper, it was analyzed in terms of materials which was source of defect in laser welding and conventional arc welding. As a results of analysis, insulation coating film of the laminated core was judged to main factor of weld defect. it could be well aware as tracing carbon volume, and it was deduced that weld defect by insulation coating film was caused by difference of mechanism between the two heat sources.

  • In material processing, a laser system with optimal laser parameters has been considered to be significant. Especially, the laser scribing technology is thought to be very important for fabricating DSSC(Dye sensitized solar eel!) modules with good quality. Moreover, the $TEM_{00}$ mode laser beam is the most dominant factor to decide the IPCE(Incident photon to current conversion efficiency) characteristics. In order to get the $TEM_{00}$ mode, a pin-hole is inserted within a simple pulsed Nd:YAG laser resonator. And the spatial field distribution is measured by using three size pin-hole diameters of 2.0, 6.0mm respectively. At that moment, each case has the same laser beam energy by adjusting the discharge voltage and pps(pulse per second). From those results, it is known that the pin-hole size of 2.0mm has the perfect $TEM_{00}$ mode. In addition, at the charging voltage of 1000V, 10pps and the feeding speed of 1.11mm/sec, the SEM photo of FTO(Fluorine-doped tin oxide) thin film layers shows the best scribing trace.

  • Background and Objectives Surgery for harvesting costal cartilage is often required for revision septorhinoplasty due to a lack of septal cartilage in patients with a severely contracted nose, and postoperative scarring on the anterolateral rib cage commonly requires additional treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of combined polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) and microlens array (MLA)-type nanosecond-domain neodymium (Nd):yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser treatment for postoperative scars after costal cartilage harvest surgery. Materials and Methods Nine Korean patients with scars after costal cartilage harvest surgery treated with PDRN injections and MLA-type Nd:YAG laser treatments were retrospectively reviewed. Results Most of the scar lesions exhibited clinical improvement at 2 weeks after PDRN and MLA-type nanosecond-domain laser treatments, and the lesions further improved after adding more treatment sessions. The median Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) score decreased from 6 (interquartile range [IQR]: 6-7) before combined intralesional PDRN injection and MLA-type, nanosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser treatments to 3 (IQR: 2-4) thereafter. Patient satisfaction after the combination treatments was rated as satisfactory. None of our patients reported major adverse events. Conclusion This case series study demonstrated that combined PDRN and MLA-type, nanosecond-domain Nd:YAG laser treatments are effective and safe for treating scars from costal cartilage harvest surgery.

  • For the conventional welding method, the high heat transfer makes the crystallization of the work material unavoidable. Whereas the laser is able to weld the amorphous metal without a crystallized zone, because heat transfer is limited withn a very small restricted volume. In this paper, the possibilities and the limits of the laser welding in a deep frozen environment by liquid nitrogen were studied to utilize the advantageous properties of amorphous metal foils. The author investigated, after laser welding in a deep frozen environment with a solid state laser (Nd:YAG-laser), the achievable strengths and the influences of the laser beam parameters on the strengths.

  • Pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used widely for materials processing and instrumentation. It is very important to control the laser energy density in materials processing by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. A pulse repetition rate and a pulse width are regarded as the most dominant factors to control the energy density of laser beam. In this study, the alternating charge-discharge system was designed to adjust a pulse repetition rate. And the parallel mesh is added to increase laser output power. This system is controlled by one chip microprocessor and allows to replace an expensive condenser for high frequency to a cheap condenser for low frequency. In addition, we have investigated the current pulse shape of flashlamp and the operating characteristics of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. As a result, it is found that the laser output of the power supply using the parallel mesh and the alternating charge-discharge system is not less than that of typical power supply. As the pulse repetition rate rises from 10pps to 110pps by the step of 20pps at 1000V and 1200V, it is found that the laser efficiency decreases but the laser output power increases about 5W at each step.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nd:YAG laser treatment on removal of smear layer and exposure of dentinal tubules. The experimental specimens were obtained from root planed surface of 30 human teeth which were extracted due to severe periodontal disease. The specimens were assigned randomly of three groups: root planed group, Tetracycline HCl(100mg/ml, 5min) group, and Nd:YAG laser ($Laser-35^{TM}$, U.S.A. 5 seconds )group. Nd:YAG laser group was divided into 4 subgroups according to 3.0W, 3.5W, 4.0W, 4.5W of power. The surface change of specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The number of exposed dentinal tubules and percentage of area occupied by dentinal tubule orifices per unit area between each group was statistically analyzed by paired Student t-test. The results were as follows: 1. By root planing only, dentinal tubule was not exposed, but scale-like smear layer and parallel instrument tracks were resulted. 2. Tetracycline HCl treated surfaces exhibited the small number of partially exposed dentinal tubules with long orifices. The number($3.80{\pm}0.79$) of exposed dentinal tubules on Tetracycline HCl group was significantly less than that in laser groups above 3.5W of power(P<0.001), and the percentage ($0.68{\pm}0.19$) of area occufied by dentinal tubule orifices per unit area($192\;{\mu}m^2$) was significantly lower than that of any laser group(P<0.001). 3. The laser group irradiated with 4.5W of power showed both the most number($10.60{\pm}0.97$) of exposed dentinal tubules among the experimental groups, and the highest percentage($3.75{\pm}0.55\;%$) of area occupied by dentinal tubule orifices. 4. Energy Surge during laser pulsing and overlapping passes of the fiber resulted in melted and resolidified surface textures with lava-like appearance.

  • Laser surface hardening is beneficially used for surface treatment of structural steel. Due to very rapid heating and cooling rates, structural low-alloy steel(SCM4) can be hardened as self quenching. The aim of this research project is to improve the influence of the process laser parameters: laser power, spot size, surface roughness, and traverse speed. The laser beam is allowed to scan on the surface of the workpiece at the constant power(1095W), varying the traverse speed at 0.3m/min, 0.5m/min and 0.8m/min. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide surface hardening area with uniform hardness. From the results of the experiment, it has been shown that the stable hardness is about 600$\sim$700Hv, when the laser power, focal position and the traverse speed are P=1095W, z=0mm and v=0.3m/min.

  • Laser shock peening is useful to improve fatigue characteristic of multiple number of metals and alloys. This process induces a compressive residual stress on the metal surface, and when tensile load is applied, growth of crack is delayed and which changes the characteristic of the metal surface. It is an innovative surface treatment technique for strengthening metals. Specimens of SM45C are used in this study. The effect of an inertial tamping layer on the residual stress field using laser shock peening setup and Nd:YAG laser power is evaluated. Residual stress distribution measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result of this study it can be presented that following condition of Nd:YAG laser power and inertial tamping layer parameters, compressive residual stress is generated on the surface of the SM45C. Results to experimental data indicate that laser shock peening has great potential as a means of improving the mechanical performance of the metal surface.
