Flame Structure of a Liftoff Non-Premixed Turbulent Hydrogen Jet with Coaxial Air (부상된 수소 난류확산화염의 화염구조)

  • To understand hydrogen jet liftoff height, the stabilization mechanism of turbulent lifted jet flames under non-premixed conditions was studied. The objectives were to determine flame stability mechanisms, to analyze coexistence of two different flame structure, and to characterize the lifted jet at the flame stabilization point. Hydrogen flow velocity varied from 100 to 300 m/s. Coaxial air velocity was changed from 12 to 20 m/s. Simultaneous velocity field and reaction zone measurements used, PIV/OH PLIF techniques with Nd:YAG lasers and CCD/ICCD cameras. Liftoff height decreased with the increase of fuel velocity. The flame stabilized in a lower velocity region next to the faster fuel jet due to the mixing effects of the coaxial air flow. The flame stabilization was related to turbulent intensity and strain rate assuming that combustion occurs where local flow velocity and turbulent flame propagation velocity are balanced. At the flame base, two different flame structures were found that was the partial premixed flames and premixed flame.

  • To reveal the newly found liftoff height behavior of hydrogen jet, we have experimentally studied the stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition. The objectives of the present research are to report the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity, to analyse the flame structure and behavior of the lifted jet, and to explain the mechanisms of flame stability in hydrogen turbulent non-premixed jet flames. The velocity of hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone, PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. As results, it has been found that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means that combustion occurs at the point where the local flow velocity is balanced with the turbulent flame propagation velocity.

  • Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve a wear resistance and a corrosion resistance of the industrial parts. The objective of this research works is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as the welding for SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. The bead-on-plate welding tests are carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the dissimilar welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stain-stress behavior and the hardness of the welded part are investigated. From the results of the investigation, it has been shown that the optimal welding condition without defects in the vicinity of the welded area and with a good welding qualify is 1600W of the laser power, 0.85m/min of welding speed and $4{\ell}/min$ of pressure for shielding gas.

  • The laser material processing has replaced a conventional material processing such as a welding, cutting, drilling and surface modification and so on. LTH(Laser Transformation Hardening) is one branch of the laser surface modification process. A lot of energy is needed for the LTH process to elevate workpiece surface to temperature of the austenite transformation($A_3$), which results from utilizing a beam with a larger size and lower power intensity comparatively. The absorptivity of the laser energy with respect to material depends on the wave length of a beam. This study is related to the surface hardening for the rod-shaped carbon steel by the high power diode laser(HPDL) whose beam absorptivity is better than conventional types of lasers such as $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser. Because a beam proceeds on the rotating specimen the pretreated hardened-phase can be tempered and softened by the overlapping between hardened tracks. Accordingly, the longitudinal hardness measurement and observation of the micro structure was carried out for an assessment of the hardening characteristics. In addition, a hardening characteristics as a hardenability of materials was compared in the point of view of the hardness distribution and hardening depth and width.

Comparison of Degradation Behaviors for Titanium-based Hard Coatings by Pulsed Laser Thermal Shock

  • Ti-based coatings following laser ablation were studied to compare degradation behaviors by thermomechanical stress. TiN, TiCN, and TiAlN coatings were degraded by a Nd:YAG pulsed laser with an increase in the laser pulses. A decrease in the hardness was identified as the pulses increased, and the hardness levels were in the order of TiAlN > TiCN > TiN. The TiN showed cracks on the surface, and cracks with pores formed along the cracks were observed in the TiCN. The dominant degradation behavior of the TiAlN was surface pore formation. EDS results revealed that diffusion of substrate atoms to the coating surface occurred in the TiN. Delamination occurred in the TiN and TiCN, while the TiAlN which has higher thermal stability than the TiN and TiCN maintained adhesion to the substrate. It was considered that the decrease in the hardness of the Ti-based hard coatings is attributed to surface cracking and the diffusion of substrate atoms.

Clinical evaluation of Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure® (LANAP®) surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis: a retrospective case series of 1-year results in 22 consecutive patients

  • Purpose: Treatment for periodontitis has evolved over the years as new technologies have become available. Currently, lasers seem attractive as a treatment modality, but their effectiveness needs to be verified. The purpose of this project was to evaluate Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure® (LANAP®) surgery as a single treatment modality. Methods: As part of a mandatory training program for periodontists and other dentists, 22 consecutive patients diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontitis (probing depth [PD] up to 11 mm) were treated with the LANAP® surgical approach using a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser as part of a multi-step protocol. Following single-session active therapy, they were entered into a maintenance program. Their clinical status was re-evaluated at 12-18 months following surgery. Results: All 22 patients completed the 12- to 18-month follow-up. PD, clinical attachment level, and furcation (FURC) showed substantial improvement. Recession was minimal (mean, 0.1 mm), while 93.5% of PD measurements were 3 mm or less at re-evaluation. Furthermore, 40% of grade 2 FURC closed clinically. Conclusions: Within the limits of this case series, LANAP® was found to be an effective, minimally invasive, laser surgical therapy for moderate to advanced periodontitis.

  • Solid propellants allow thrusters to be light-weight, com-pact and robust because they require neither tank nor valve, Moreover, the solid propellant will not leak, spill or slosh. Consequently, the solid propellant thruster is one of the potential candidates for the microthruster. On the other hand, the control of the solid propellant combustion is difficult, since the conventional solid propellant continues to bum until all the stored propellant is consumed. Although particular devices like thrust reverser were designed to control the combustion, these devices were rarely used in the practical rocket motors. These devices rise thruster weight as well as complicate the thruster operation. In this study, a solid propellant microthruster using laser sustained combustion was designed in order to develop a high-efficiency microthruster overcoming the previously-mentioned difficulty. This designed thruster has semiconductor lasers and non-self-combustible solid propellants in addition to the conventional solid propellant thruster. In this designed thruster, the semiconductor laser controls the combustion of the non-self-combustible solid propellant. In order to demonstrate that the solid propellant combustion is controllable with laser, some non-self-combustible solid propellants were irradiated with the laser at a back-pressure of about 1㎪. A 40-W class Neodymium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (ND:YAG) laser was used as a tentative alternate to the semiconductor laser. This experiment has shown that the solid propellant combustion was controllable with 10- W class laser irradiation.
