A Study on the Relationship between Meteorological Condition and Wave Measurement using X-band Radar (X-밴드 레이더 파랑 계측과 기상 상태 연관성 고찰)

  • This paper analyzes wave measurement using X-band navigation (ship) radar, changes in radar signal due to snowfall and precipitation, and factors that obstruct wave measurement. Data obtained from the radar installed at Sokcho Beach were used, and data from the Korea Meteorological Administration and the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency were used for the meteorological data needed for comparative verification. Data from the Korea Meteorological Administration are measured at Sokcho Meteorological Observatory, which is about 7km away from the radar, and data from the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency are measured at a buoy about 3km away from the radar. To this point, changes in radar signals due to rainfall or snowfall have been transmitted empirically, and there is no case of an analysis comparing the results to actual weather data. Therefore, in this paper, precipitation, snowfall data, CCTV, and radar signals from the Korea Meteorological Administration were comprehensively analyzed in time series. As a result, it was confirmed that the wave height measured by the radar according to snowfall and rainfall was reduced compared to the actual wave height, and a decrease in the radar signal strength according to the distance was also confirmed. This paper is meaningful in that it comprehensively analyzes the decrease in the signal strength of radar according to snowfall and rainfall.

  • The problem for parameters estimation of the received signals impinging on array sensors has long been of great research Interest in a great variety of applications, such as radar, sonar, and land mobile communications systems. Conventional subspace-based algorithms, such as MUSIC and ESPRIT, require an extensive computation of inverse matrix and eigen-decomposition In this paper, we propose a new parameters estimation algorithm via nonlinear minimization, which is simplified computationally and estimates signal parameters simultaneously.

  • Microwave absorbers for X-Band RADAR have been designed and fabricated trialy both in sheet and paint types, as a result of which the relative bandwidth of nearly 8% in both cases has been obtained under the tolerance limits of the reflection coefficients lower than -20dB. The matching thickness becomes 1.36 to 1.56mm which is significantly thinner than that of the conventional ones. Furthermore, it was shown that the microwave absorbing characteristics vary in accordance with the density and the mixing ratios of the materials constituting absorbs.

  • This paper is concerned with the vehicle platooning in the AHS (Automated Highway Systems). For this, a relative navigation system is developed for the vehicles operating as a platoon. The relative navigation system is based on two sensors including GPS and MMWR (Millimeter-Wave Radar) and the federated Kalman Iter processing measurements of them. The architecture of this system requires GPS measurements of a preceding vehicle via communication link.   • A new adaptive filter is proposed for an aided strapdown inertial navigation system(SDINS). The proposed filter can be used to effectively estimate the time-varying variance of the measurement noise. Then, the in-flight alignment for the radar aided SDINS is designed using the additive quatermion error model. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive filter effectively improves the performance of the radar aided SDINS.

  • Since 2000, the authors have been developing remote radar network system to observe the vessel traffic in Tokyo Bay. In December 2002, the first operational remote radar station was set at the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, and vessel traffic observation was started. However, it was impossible to perform accurate observation in the northern part of Tokyo Bay by this Yokosuka radar station only. In September 2003, the second remote radar station and AIS receiving station were installed at Higashi Ogishima in Kawasaki. This second radar enabled us to carry out accurate observation in that area. Both radars can be remotely controlled from the monitoring station in Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. On September 30 and October 1,2003, the vessel traffic observation was carried out using both radars. Combining radar images observed by both radars, the ships' tracks were taken and the dangerous ships were extracted by using SJ value and Bumper Model. The time changes of dangerous ship density in some areas in Tokyo Bay and utilization ratio of the traffic routes were also investigated. In addition, analyzing the AIS date received at Kawasaki station, the positions and speed vectors of the ships equipped with AIS were shown.

  • The detectability of radar depends on RCS(radar cross section). The RCS for complex radar targets may be only approximately calculated by using low-frequency or high-frequency scattering methods, while the RCS for simple rob targets can be exactly obtained by applying an eigen-function method. However, the conventional methods for calculation of RCS are computationally complex. We propose an approximation method for RCS calculation by MUSIC algorithm In this research, it is assumed toot the radar target is considered as a ring of scatterers. The amplitudes of scatterers may be statistically distributed. As the result, the radar signal model is proposed to use MUSIC, and the RCS is calculated by a simple linear algebraic method.

Development of Remote Radar/AIS Network System for Observing and Analyzing Vessel Traffic in Tokyo Bay

  • Accurate vessel traffic observation is indispensable to carry out vessel traffic management, design of vessel traffic route, planning of port construction, etc. In order to observe the vessel traffic accurately without many efforts such as the use of a ship or car equipped with special radar observation system and the preparation of observation staff, the authors have been developing completely automated remote radar/AIS network system covering the main traffic area in Tokyo Bay. The composite radar image observed at Yokosuka and Kawasaki radar stations with AIS information can be seen on web site of Internet. In addition to the development of radar/AIS observation system, the software to analyze observed vessel traffic flow has been developed. This software has various functions such as automatic tracking of ship's positions, automatic estimation of ship's size, automatic integration of radar image and AIS data, animation of ships' movements, extraction of dangerous ship encounters, etc. The configuration and functions of the developed remote radar/AIS network system are shown first in this paper. Then various functions of the software to analyze vessel traffic are introduced, and some analyzed results on the vessel traffic in Tokyo Bay are described demonstrating the effectiveness of the developed system.

  • Data Fusion algorithm is essential in Target Detection using radar, and it has more reliability. In this paper, Multi Radar Fusion algorithm using IMM(Interacting Multiple Model) filter is suggested. This well-known IMM filter has better performance than Kalman filter has. In this simulation, Distributed Data Fusion process was applied, and three sub-filters and one main filter were employed. In addition, this simulation was evaluated by virtual radar data which include constant velocity, constant accelerate, turn rate. The result of an evaluation shows better performance in the maneuvering section of aircraft.

  • Based on IALA guidelines, the fundamental requirements of radar system for vessel traffic services are analyzed in this paper. target separation, target position accuracy, target track accuracy of X-band radar and recommended test conditions are analyzed. Also, in order to check if it satisfies the requirement of target position accuracy from IALA guideline, the test is carried out through processing of radar raw image acquired at VTS center.
