  • The restrictions concerning the use of the radio waves have become severe, the marine radar with low spurious is being developed. Therefore, it is necessary to develop aids to navigation as a radar beacon can respond to new type of marine radar. Because the system of radar in the future is an indetermination, new radar beacon should correspond to old and new radar system during a transition period. New radar beacon that is also able to respond to pulse radar, pulse compression radar and FM-CW radar were considered in these years in Japan. The sign of the response of Morse code in a new system is generated by the delay synthesis system. Computer simulation and actual examination using trial circuit were curried out. A big possibility was set up in the development of the new radar beacon that was able to correspond to old and new radar system. These results and the state of new radar beacon is mentioned in this paper.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is developing the navigation radar display of navy ship with ecological interface design (EID) framework. Background: Navy ship radar operator must perform navigation support tasks by monitoring the complex and diverse information presented on the radar display. Current radar display is limited in effective navigation aid and response to an unusual state immediately. It is necessary to develop an effective radar display. Method: Ten navy radar operators performed a series of trials in a low-fidelity radar simulation in which they attempted to solve the problems of current navigation situation. Results: The result demonstrated that the ecological interface's performance was better than the existing radar display on performance time and subjective mental workload. Conclusion: This study expand EID study field to navy ship radar display and confirm ecological display is better than existing radar display in performance time, subjective mental work load. Application: The result of this study may help to improve navy ship navigation radar display currently in use.

  • Radar is an indispensible equipment in all vessels under way. In Korea there are many fishing net buoys near the coast, which causes an enormous threat to safe navigation because it is very difficult to detect the buoys by radar due to their small radar cross section. In this study RTE(Radar Target Enhancer) was installed on the fishing net buoy and its echo was analysed carefully. The results showed the possibility of wide detection of targets, especially small targets such as fishing net buoys, navigation buoys and etc.

  • Recently, Hybrid Navigation Systems combining Omega, NNSS, Loran C and Dead reckoning etc. served to give us highly accurate ship's position, and a number of ships are equipped with these navigation systems. In order to evaluate for the accuracy of this navigation system observations of Loran C, 5970 and 9970 chains and Radar at the same time were made on board m.s Jeonbuk 401 and 403 training ships of Gunsan Fisheries Collage at nine stations in the yellow sea from July, 1982 to June, 1983, and then were done by the Hybrid Navigation System combining Dead reckoning and Loran C at the same areas. The authors investigated the accuracy of the Hybrid Navigation System based on measurements of the relative positional error which is defined as the difference between the position fixed by this system or the Loran C system, and the one by the Radar. The obtained results are as follows; 1. The mean standard deviation of the time difference of Loran C were about 0.21$\mu$s in 9970 chain and about 0.06$\mu$s in 5970 chain, and the fluctuation of the time difference of Loran C in 5970 chain was smaller than that in 9970 chain. 2. The positional error between two positions by Radar and the Hybrid Navigation System in 9970 chain was about 0.4 miles, and between two positions by Radar and Loran C was about 0.51 miles. The Hybrid Navigation System was therefore more accurate than Loran C System. 3. The positional error between two positions by Radar and Hybrid Navigation System in 5970 chain was about 0.4 miles, and between two positions by Radar and computer simulation of Loran C was about 0.98 miles. Consequently, Hybrid Navigation System was more accurate than computer simulation of Loran C system.

  • This paper deals with the development of RACOM(Radar Signal Detecting & Processing Computer). RACOM is a radar display system specially designed for radar scan conversion, signal processing and PCI radar image display. RACOM contains two components; i )RSP(Radar Signal Processor) board which is a PCI based board for receiving video, trigger, heading & bearing signals from radar scanner & tranceiver units and processing these signals to generate high resolution radar image, and ⅱ)Applications which perform ordinary radar display functions such as EBL, VRM and so on. Since RACOM is designed to meet a wide variety of specifications(type of output signal from tranceiver unit), to record radar images and to distribute those images in real time to everywhere in a networked environment, it can be applicable to AIS(Automatic Identification System) and VDR(Voyage Data Recorder).

  • Usually marine traffic survey has been conducted by some methods like an ocular observation using portable RADAR, a questionnaire, etc. But these should have expended a lot of manpower and expenses. In this paper, we have developed new observation module which could capture the RADAR image using PC camera simply, and allowed as to track targets on the PC monitor directly. And it has been programmed to make a database of RADAR image, target's track and information, and analyze the marine traffic tendency in various ways like vessel number crossed over gate line, vessel's velocity distribution in gate line, traffic density distribution, etc. We have confirmed that this module could observe and analyze the marine traffic efficiently and economically through several on-the-spot experiments.

  • This paper proposes a method for generating radar images used in a ship handling simulator, which includes mathematical logics based on radar equations and information from Openflight format files. In order to make radar image much similar to that of real radar in PPI type, the proposed mathematical logic derives radar video signals under the consideration of not only the data form flight format file of simulation scenes, but also geographical radar's position. The proposed method is considered useful to make radar images in ship handling simulator with accuracy and reality.
