This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.
The laser Doppler technique is well-established as a velocity measurement technique of high precision for flow velocity. Recently, the laser Doppler technique has also been used to measure acceleration of fluid particles. Acceleration is interesting from a fluid mechanics point of view, since the Navier Stokes equations, specifically the left-hand-side, are formulated in terms of fluid acceleration. Further, there are several avenues to estimating the dissipation rate using the acceleration. However such measurements place additional demands on the design of the optical system; in particular fringe non-uniformity must be held below about 0.0001 to avoid systematic errors. Relations expressing fringe divergence as a function of the optical parameters of the system have been given in the literature; however, direct use of these formulae to minimize fringe divergence lead either to very large measurement volumes or to extremely high intersection angles. This dilemma can be resolved by using an off-axis receiving arrangement, in which the measurement volume is truncated by a pinhole in front of the detection plane. In the present study an optical design study is performed for optimizing laser Doppler systems for fluid acceleration measurements. This is followed by laboratory validation using a round free jet and a stagnation flow, two flows in which either fluid acceleration has been previously measured or in which the acceleration is known analytically. A 90 degree off-axis receiving angle is used with a pinhole or a slit.

Since the intake air of gas turbine engine of marine purpose contains water particles, inertial separator for separating the air and water particles are provided. Saw type and wave type separator are now used to separate inflow water particle from the gas. In this paper, the design parameters of saw type separator are studied by numerical simulations. Using the commercial CFD program, Star-CCM+, Lagrangian-Eulerian method was used to perform the analysis of two phase flow of the mist in the air. This method solves Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in Eulerian framework for the continuous phase, while solves equation of motion for individual particles in Lagrangian framework. Lagrangian multiphase method was applied to monitor the particles of different sizes and shapes and to verify collision between particles by chasing particles. Water particles were injected through injectors located at the inlet of the separator and escape mode was used which assumes that the particles attached on the surface of inertial separator were removed from the simulation, effectively escaping the solution domain. Through the numerical computations with the inlet condition of constant water particle size in the wetness fraction of 85%, efficiency of eliminating the water particle and the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet were examined.

This paper describes the design optimization of a rotating rectangular channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins by Kriging metamodeling technique. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the height to the diameter of the pin-fins and the ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to the diameter of the pin-fins are chosen as the design variables. The objective function that is a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor is selected for the optimization. To construct the Kriging model, objective function values at 20 training points generated by Latin hypercube sampling are evaluated by a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis method with the SST turbulence model. The Kriging model predicts the objective function value that agrees well with the value calculated by the RANS analysis at the optimum point. The objective function is reduced by 11% by the optimization of the channel.
This study investigates a design optimization of a rotating two-pass rectangular cooling channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins. The radial basis neural network method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. The ratio of the diameter to height of the pin-fins and the ratio of the streamwise spacing between the pin-fins to height of the pin-fin are selected as design variables. The optimization problem has been defined as a minimization of the objective function, which is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. Results are presented for streamlines, velocity vector fields, and contours of Nusselt numbers, friction coefficients, and turbulent kinetic energy. These results show how fluid flow in a two-pass square cooling channel evolves a converted secondary flows due to Coriolis force, staggered arrays of pin-fins, and a $180^{\circ}$ turn region. These results describe how the fluid flow affects surface heat transfer. The Coriolis force induces heat transfer discrepancy between leading and trailing surfaces, having higher Nusselt number on the leading surface in the second pass while having lower Nusselt number on the trailing surface. Dean vortices generated in $180^{\circ}$ turn region augment heat transfer in the turning region and in the upstream region of the second pass. As the result of optimization, in comparison with the reference geometry, thermal performance of the optimum geometry shows the improvement by 30.5%. Through the optimization, the diameter of pin-fin increased by 14.9% and the streamwise distance between pin-fins increased by 32.1%. And, the value of objective function decreased by 18.1%.

The shock-induced combustion ramjet (shcramjet) is a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion concept which over-comes the drawbacks of the long, massive combustors present in the scramjet by using a standing oblique detonation wave (a coupled shock-combustion front) as a means of nearly instantaneous heat addition. A novel shcramjet combustor design that makes use of wedge-shaped flameholders to avoid detonation wave-wall interactions is proposed and analyzed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in this study. The laminar, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a non-equilibrium hydrogen-air combustion model based on chemical kinetics are used to represent the physical system. The equations are solved with the WARP (window-allocatable resolver for propulsion) CFD code (see: Parent, B. and Sislian, J. P., “The Use of Domain Decomposition in Accelerating the Convergence of Quasihyperbolic Systems”, J. of Comp. Physics, Vol. 179, No. 1,2002, pages 140-169). The solver was validated with experimental results found in the literature. A series of steady-state numerical simulations was conducted using WARP and it was deter-mined by means of thrust potential calculations that this combustor design is a viable one for shcramjet propulsion: assuming a shcramjet flight Mach number of twelve at an altitude of 36,000 m, the geometrical dimensions used for the combustor give rise to an operational range for combustor inlet Mach numbers between six and eight. Different shcramjet flight Mach numbers would require different combustor dimensions and hence a variable geometry system in or-der to be viable.

A multi-level design optimization framework for aerodynamic design of rotary wing such as propeller and helicopter rotor blades is presented in this study. Strategy of the proposed framework is to enhance aerodynamic performance by sequentially applying the planform and sectional design optimization. In the first level of a planform design, we used a genetic algorithm and blade element momentum theory (BEMT) based on two-dimensional aerodynamic database to find optimal planform variables. After an initial planform design, local flow conditions of blade sections are analyzed using high-fidelity CFD methods. During the next level, a sectional design optimization is conducted using two dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and a gradient based optimization algorithm. When optimal airfoil shape is determined at the several spanwise locations, a planform design is performed again. Through this iterative design process, not only an optimal flow condition but also an optimal shape of an EAV propeller blade is obtained. To validate the optimized propeller-blade design, it is tested in wind-tunnel facility with different flow conditions. An efficiency, which is slightly less than the expected improvement of 7% predicted by our proposed design framework but is still satisfactory to enhance the aerodynamic performance of EAV system.
The 486m-long roof of Shenzhen Citizens Centre is one of the world's longest spatial lattice roof structures. A comprehensive numerical study of wind effects on the long-span structure is presented in this paper. The discretizing and synthesizing of random flow generation technique (DSRFG) recently proposed by two of the authors (Huang and Li 2008) was adopted to produce a spatially correlated turbulent inflow field for the simulation study. The distributions and characteristics of wind loads on the roof were numerically evaluated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, in which Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations (RANS) Model were employed. The main objective of this study is to explore a useful approach for estimations of wind effects on complex curved roof by CFD techniques. In parallel with the numerical investigation, simultaneous pressure measurements on the entire roof were made in a boundary layer wind tunnel to determine mean, fluctuating and peak pressure coefficient distributions, and spectra, spatial correlation coefficients and probability characteristics of pressure fluctuations. Numerical results were then compared with these experimentally determined data for validating the numerical methods. The comparative study demonstrated that the LES integrated with the DSRFG technique could provide satisfactory prediction of wind effects on the long-span roof with complex shape, especially on separation zones along leading eaves where the worst negative wind-induced pressures commonly occur. The recommended LES and inflow turbulence generation technique as well as associated numerical treatments are useful for structural engineers to assess wind effects on a long-span roof at its design stage.
This study investigates the applicability of CADMAS-SURF (Super Roller Flume for Computer Aided Design of a MArtime Structure) code basal on the Navier-Stokes solver to predict bore phenomena. The time variation of ware levels and velocities due to the bore propagation were computed for the different bore strength conditions. In order to verify the numerical results by CADMAS-SURF, laboratory experiments were also performed, using the DPIV and LDV measuring system. The numerical results were compared to the experimental data and the analytical predictions by the NSC method basal on fully nonlinear shallow-water theory by the method of characteristics. It appears that the CADMAS-SURF slightly overestimated the water-surface level measured by the laboratory experiments and its discrepancy becomes prominent as the bore strength increases. The predicted propagation speed for a bore was also slaver than that by the experiment and NSC method. However, the temporal variations in velocities were in relatively good agreement with the experimental data for all cases, except for overshooting and undershooting in the front face of a bore, which may be derived from the numerical instability. Further, CADMAS-SURF successfully simulated the decrease in the water level and velocity caused by the effects of negative waves reflected from the upstream end wall.
Fluid film bearings are among the best devices used for overcoming friction and reducing wear. Surface texturing is a new surface treatment technique used for processing grooves and dimples on the lubricated surface, and it helps to minimize friction further and improve the wear resistance. In several studies, parallel surfaces, such as thrust bearings and mechanical face seals, have been investigated, but most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape. This paper presents the third part of a recent study and focuses on the effect of the groove shape on the lubrication performance of inclined slider bearings, following the two previous papers on the effects of the groove position and depth. We adopted the continuity and Navier - Stokes equations to conduct numerical analyses using FLUENT, which is a commercial computational fluid dynamics code. The groove shape adopted in the numerical analysis is rectangular and triangular, and its depth is varied. The results show that the streamlines, pressure distributions, and groove shape significantly influence the lubrication performance of the inclined slider bearing. For both shapes, the load-carrying capacity (LCC) is maximum near the groove depth, where vortices occur. In the shallow grooves, the LCC of the rectangular shape is higher, but in deeper grooves, that of the triangular shape is higher. The deeper the rectangular groove, the higher the decrease in the frictional force. The results of this study can be used as design data for various sliding bearings.
