Fluid film bearings are among the best devices used for overcoming friction and reducing wear. Surface texturing is a new surface treatment technique used for processing grooves and dimples on the lubricated surface, and it helps to minimize friction further and improve the wear resistance. In several studies, parallel surfaces, such as thrust bearings and mechanical face seals, have been investigated, but most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape. This paper presents the third part of a recent study and focuses on the effect of the groove shape on the lubrication performance of inclined slider bearings, following the two previous papers on the effects of the groove position and depth. We adopted the continuity and Navier - Stokes equations to conduct numerical analyses using FLUENT, which is a commercial computational fluid dynamics code. The groove shape adopted in the numerical analysis is rectangular and triangular, and its depth is varied. The results show that the streamlines, pressure distributions, and groove shape significantly influence the lubrication performance of the inclined slider bearing. For both shapes, the load-carrying capacity (LCC) is maximum near the groove depth, where vortices occur. In the shallow grooves, the LCC of the rectangular shape is higher, but in deeper grooves, that of the triangular shape is higher. The deeper the rectangular groove, the higher the decrease in the frictional force. The results of this study can be used as design data for various sliding bearings.
This paper provides quantification of the effects of the turbulence model and grid refinement on the analysis of tip vortex flows by using the RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of the tip vortex flows of the NACA $66_2$-415 elliptic hydrofoil were conducted, and two turbulence models for RANS closure were tested, i.e., the Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the Reynolds stress transport model. Numerical results were compared with available experimental data, and it was shown that the data for the Reynolds stress transport model that were computed on the finest grid system had better agreement in reproducing the development and propagation of the tip vortex. The Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model overestimated the turbulence level in the vortex core and showed a diffusive behavior of the tip vortex. The tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil and its trajectory also showed good agreement between the current numerical results that were obtained using the Reynolds stress transport model and the results observed in the experiment.
In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model was used to predict the quantitative flow information more accurately. Application of commercial CFD code to optimum blade design and performance analysis was proved to be more effective environment to HAWT blade designers.
A multi-objective optimization of a regenerative fan for enhancing the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance was carried out using an integrated fan design system, namely, Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$. The Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ was developed for non-specialists to carry out a series of design process, viz., computational preliminary design, three-dimensional aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses, and design optimization, for a regenerative fan. An aerodynamic analysis of the regenerative fan was conducted by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the shear stress transport turbulence model. And, an aeroacoustic analysis of the regenerative fan was implemented in a finite/infinite element method by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's analogy based on the results of the unsteady flow analysis. An optimum shape obtained by Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ shows the enhanced efficiency and decreased sound pressure level as much as 1.5 % and 20.0 dB, respectively, compared to those of the reference design. The performance test was carried out for an optimized regenerative fan to validate the performance of the numerically predicted optimal design.
Surface texturing is the latest technology for processing grooves or dimples on the friction surface of a machine. When appropriately applied, it can reduce friction and significantly increase durability. Despite many studies over the past 20 years, most are isothermal (ISO) analyses in which the viscosity of the lubricant is constant. In practice, the viscosity changes significantly owing to the heat generated by the viscous shear of the lubricant and film-temperature boundary condition (FTBC). Although many thermohydrodynamic (THD) analyses have been performed on various sliding bearings, only few results for surface-textured bearings have been reported. This study investigates the effects of the FTBC and groove number on the THD lubrication characteristics of a surface-textured parallel thrust bearing with multiple rectangular grooves. The continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations are numerically analyzed using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The results show the pressure and temperature distributions, variations of load-carrying capacity (LCC), and friction force with four FTBCs. The FTBCs greatly influence the lubrication characteristics of surface-textured parallel thrust bearings. A groove number that maximizes the LCC exists, which depends on the FTBC. ISO analysis overestimates the LCC but underestimates friction reduction. Additional analysis of various temperature boundary conditions is required for practical applications.
Supercavitation is a phenomenon in which the cavity covers the entire underwater vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the thermal effect on the cavity characteristics by changing the ventilated gas temperature through computational analysis. For this study, a homogeneous mixture model based on the 3D Navier-Stokes equation was used. As a phase change model, it is its own code considering both pressure change and temperature change. A dimensionless number Tm was presented to analyze the numerical results, and as the Tm increased, the cavity length increased by about 3.6 times and the cavity width by about 3.3 times at 393.15 K compared to room temperature. Analyzing these thermal effects, it was confirmed that rapid heat exchange and heat transfer between the gas phase and the liquid phase occurred at the location where the ventilated gas was sprayed, affecting the cavity characteristics. In addition, it can be confirmed that the initial cavity surface becomes unstable as the ventilated gas temperature increases, and it can be confirmed based on the numerical analysis results that the critical temperature at which the cavity surface becomes unstable is 373.15 K.
To control the coating thickness of zinc in the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is known from early day that the gas wiping through an air knife system is the most effective because of the obtainable of uniformity of coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, working ability in high speed and simplicity of control. But, the gas wiping using in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing from the strip edge for a certain high speed of coating. And, it is known that the problem of splashing is caused mainly by the existence of separation bubble at the neighbor of the strip surface. In theses connections, in the present study, we proposed two kinds of air knife systems having the same expansion rate of nozzle, and the jet structures and coating thicknesses from a conventional and new proposed nozzles are compared. In numerical analysis, the governing equations consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to solve turbulence stress and so on are employed. As a result, it is found that it had better to use the constant rate nozzle from the point view of the energy saving to obtain the same coating thickness. Also, to reduce the size of separation bubble and to enhance the cutting ability at the strip, it is recommendable to use an air knife having the constant expansion rate nozzle.
In order to investigate the flows with shock wave in branch, 108$^{\circ}$ elbow and T-junction of the IRWST system of standard Korean nuclear reactor, detail time dependent behaviors of unsteady flow with shock wave, vortex and so on are obtained by numerical method using compressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. At first, the complex flow including the incident and reflected shock waves, vortex and expansion waves which are generated at the corner of T-junction is calculated by the commercial code of FLUENT6 and is compared with the experimental result to obtain the validation of numerical method. Then the flow fields in above mentioned units are analyzed by numerical method of [mite volume method. In numerical analysis, the distributions of flow properties with the moving of shock wave and the forces acting on the wall of each unit which can be used to calculate the size of supporting structure in future are calculated specially. It is found that the initial shock wave of normal type is re-established its type from an oblique one having the same strength of the initial shock wave at the 4 times hydraulic diameters of downstream from the branch point of each unit. Finally, it is turned out that the maximum force acting on the pipe wall becomes in order of the T-junction, 108$^{\circ}$ elbow and branch in magnitude, respectively.
This paper presents numerical results of the performance of a marin propeller in cavitating and non-cavitating flow conditions. The geometry and experimental validation data of the propeller are provided in Potsdam Propeller Test Case(PPTC) in the framework of the second International Symposium on Marine Propulsors 2011(SMP'11) workshop. The PPTC includes open water tests, velocity field measurements and cavitation tests. The present numerical analysis was carried out by using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) method on a wall-resolved grid ensuring a y+=1, where the SST k-${\omega}$ model was mainly used for turbulence closure. The influence of the turbulence model was investigated in the prediction of the wake field under a non-cavitating flow condition. The propeller tip vortex flows in both cavitating and non-cavitating conditions were captured through adaptation of additional grids. For the cavitation flows at three operation points, Schnerr-Sauer's cavitation model was used with a Volume-Of Fluid(VOF) approach to capture the two-phase flows. The present numerical results for the propeller wake and cavitation predictions including the open water performance showed a qualitatively reasonable agreement with the model test results.
