  • A parametric study of a 2.5 kW class propeller type micro hydraulic turbine was performed. In order to analyze the internal flow characteristics in the hydraulic turbine, three dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model were used and the hexahedral grid system was used to construct computational domain. To secure the reliability of the numerical analysis, the grid dependency test was performed using the grid convergence index method based on the Richardson extrapolation, and the grid dependency was removed when about 1.7 million nodes were used. For the parametric study, the axial distance at shroud span (L) between the inlet guide vane and the runner, and the inlet and outlet blade angles (β1, β2) of the runner were selected as the geometric parameters. The inlet and outlet angles of the runner were defined in the 3 spans from the hub to tip, and a total of 7 geometric parameters were investigated. It was confirmed that the outlet angles of the runner had the most sensitive effect on the power and efficiency of the micro hydraulic turbine.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel are studied to make clear the flow feature by solving the Navier-Stokes equation based on the finite volume method with unstructured grids. Reviews are made on with the vorticity, velocity, dynamic pressure, residual and drag, where the Reynolds numbers are 50 and 100. The flows for $Re{\succeq}50$ shows the vortex shedding in the wake, and the result is the same as the case of moving cylinder. The ground effect of flat bottom results in the growth of vortex, being generated in the upper side of the cylinder and elongated in the rear. As the cylinder approaches to wall, for example 0.6, the cylinder plays as a role of blockage to obstruct the flow between the cylinder and wall. The drag coefficients are compared with others' results to confirm the validity of the present numerical simulation.

  • A molecular-continuum hybrid method was developed to simulate microscale and nanoscale fluids where continuum fluidics cannot be used to predict Couette flow. Molecular dynamics simulation is used near the solid surface where the flow cannot be predicted by continuum fluidics, and Navier-Stokes equations are used in the other regions. Numerical simulation of Couette flow was performed using the hybrid method to investigate the effect of solid-liquid interaction and surface roughness in a nanochannel. It was found that the solid-liquid interaction and surface roughness influence the boundary condition. When the surface energy is low, slippage occurs near the solid surface, and the magnitude of slippage decreases with increase in surface energy. When the surface energy is high, a locking boundary condition is formed. The roughness disturbs slippage near the solid surface and promotes the locking boundary condition.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis and design of the Darrieus-type vertical axis turbine to evaluate the effect of key design parameters such as number of blade, blade chord, pitch and camber. The commercial CFD software FLUENT was employed as an unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver with k-e turbulent model. Grid system was modelled by GAMBIT. Basic numerical methodology of the present study is appeared in Jung et al. (2009). Two-dimensional analysis was mostly adopted to avoid the barrier of massive calculation required for parametric study. It was found that the highly efficient turbine model could be designed through the optimization of design parametrrs.

  • In this paper, we studied the effects of intersection angles of the flow-foucusing type droplet generation device inlet channel on droplet diameter using numerical simulation modeling. We modeled different intersection angles with a fixed continuous channel width, dispersed channels width, orifices width, and expansion channels width. Numerical simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics$^{(R)}$ to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow in various flow-focusing geometries. Modeling results showed that an increase of the intersection angle causes an increase in the modification of the dispersed flow rate ($v^{\prime}{_d}$), and the increase of the modification of the continuous flow rate ($v^{\prime}{_c}$) obstructs the dispersed phase fluid flow, thereby reducing the droplet diameter. However, the droplet diameter did not decrease, even when the intersection angle increased. The droplet diameter decreased when the intersection angle was less than $90^{\circ}$, increased at an intersection angle of $90^{\circ}$, and decreased when the intersection angle was more than $90^{\circ}$. Furthermore, when the intermediate energy deceased, there was a decrease in the droplet diameter when the intersection angle increased. Therefore, variations in the droplet diameter can be used to change the intersection angle and fluid flow rate.

  • This paper provides quantification of the effects of the turbulence model and grid refinement on the analysis of tip vortex flows by using the RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of the tip vortex flows of the NACA $66_2$-415 elliptic hydrofoil were conducted, and two turbulence models for RANS closure were tested, i.e., the Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the Reynolds stress transport model. Numerical results were compared with available experimental data, and it was shown that the data for the Reynolds stress transport model that were computed on the finest grid system had better agreement in reproducing the development and propagation of the tip vortex. The Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model overestimated the turbulence level in the vortex core and showed a diffusive behavior of the tip vortex. The tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil and its trajectory also showed good agreement between the current numerical results that were obtained using the Reynolds stress transport model and the results observed in the experiment.

  • CMBT(Curved Moving Boundary Treatment) is a newly developed scheme for the treatment of a no slip condition on the curved solid wall of moving obstacle in a flow field. In our research CMBT was used to perform LBM simulation of a flow over a moving circular cylinder to determine the flow feature and aerodynamics characteristic of the cylinder. To ascertain the applicability of CMBT on the complex shape of the obstacle, it was first simulated for the case of the flow over a fixed circular cylinder in a channel and the results were compared against the solution of Navier-Stokes equation with deforming mesh technique. The simulations were performed in a moderate range of reynolds number at each moving cylinder to identify the flow feature and aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel. The drag coefficients of the cylinder were calculated from the simulation results. We have numerically confirmed that the critical reynolds number for vortex shedding is ar Re=250 and the result is the same as the case of fixed cylinder. As the cylinder approaching to one wall, the 2nd vortex is developed by interacting with the wall boundary-layer vorticity. As the velocity ratio increase the third vortex are generated by interacting with the 2nd vortexes developed on the upper and lower wall boundary layer. The resultant $C_d$ decrease as reynolds number increasing and the Cd approached to a value when Re>1000.

  • This article examines the scale effect of the flow characteristics, resistance and propulsion performance on a 317k VLCC. The turbulent flows around a ship in both towing and self-propulsion conditions are analyzed by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out in both model- and full-scale. A double-body model is applied for the treatment of free surface. An asymmetric body-force propeller is used. The speed performances including resistance and propulsion factors are obtained from two kinds of methods. One is to analyze the computational results in model scale through the revised ITTC' 78 method. The other is directly to analyze the computational results in full scale. Based on the computational predictions, scale effects of the resistance and the self-propulsion factors including form factor, thrust deduction fraction, effective wake fraction and various efficiencies are investigated. Scale effects of the streamline pattern, hull pressure and local flow characteristics including x-constant sections, propeller and center plane, and transom region are also investigated. This study presents a useful tool to hull-form and propeller designers, and towing-tank experimenters to take the scale effect into consideration.

선원의 사용자에게 제공되는 최종방사능을 평가하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.r의 분포를 보였다.cting the effect of earthquake on structures. • Simulation of flow past a complex marine structure requires a fine resolution in the vicinity of the structure, whereas a coarse resolution is enough far away from it. Therefore, a lot of grid cells may be wasted, when a simple Cartesian grid system is used for an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). To alleviate this problems while maintaining the Cartesian frame work, we adopted an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) scheme where the grid system dynamically and locally refines as needed. In this study, We implemented a moving IBM and an AMR technique in our basic 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. A Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method was used to effectively treat the free surface, and a recently developed Lagrangian Dynamic Subgrid-scale Model (LDSM) was incorporated in the code for accurate turbulence modeling. To capture vortex induced vibration accurately, the equation for the structure movement and the governing equations for fluid flow were solved at the same time implicitly. Also, We have developed an interface by using AutoLISP, which can properly distribute marker particles for IBM, compute the geometrical information of the object, and transfer it to the solver for the main simulation. To verify our numerical methodology, our results were compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. Using the verified code, we investigated the following cases. (1) simulating flow around a floating sphere. (2) simulating flow past a marine structure.
