  • In the beam-like ship vibration analysis. three-dimensional correction factor(J-factor) can be calculated by considering the three-dimensional effect of the two-dimensional added mass. However, existing method is time-consuming with low accuracy in respect of global vibration analyses for vessels with large breadth. In this paper, to improve the demerit of the previous method, a new method of the beam-like ship vibration analysis is introduced In this method. the three-dimensional fluid added mass of surrounding water is calculated directly by solving the velocity potential problem using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). Then the three-dimensional added mass is evaluated as the lumped mass for each strip. Also, the beam-like ship vibration analysis for the structural beam model if performed with the lumped mass considered. It was verified that this new method is useful for the beam-like ship vibration analysis by comparing results obtained from both the existing method and the new method with experimental measurements for the open top container model.

  • The primary objective of the current study is to develop outstanding hull form on resistance performance by using numerical analysis code. Model tests were conducted to assess the resistance performance of the developed hull form. The investigation of an existing vessel was performed for validating the actual ship design based on the drawing. The operating displacement and speed were mainly confirmed through investigation of the existing vessel. The resistance performance of the existing vessel was analyzed using numerical code. The developed vessel was derived through studies on wave improvement of the bow shoulder, the balance of displacement distribution, the modification of the frame shape, and the size and shape change of the center skeg. Based on the results of a computational fluid dynamics analysis, the resistance performance of the developed vessel showed an improvement of 15% over the existing vessel at a speed of 11 knots. Resistance tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the existing vessel and the developed vessel in the towing tank. Finally, the effective horsepower of the developed vessel showed an improvement of 17% over the existing vessel.

  • The primary objective of the current work is to predict speed performance of the medium patrol boat over $F_N=0.5$ employing experimental materials based on the CFD before model tests. In other words, the predicted brake powers according to ship speeds are assessed satisfying the main engine capacity. The subject ships are selected the two different stern hull forms. The flow computation are conducted considering free surface and dynamic trim using a commercial CFD code(STAR-CCM+). The resistances of the bare-hull are obtained from CFD. Wave patterns, pressures and limiting streamlines on the hull and velocity distribution in the propeller plane for the two hull forms are compared using CFD. The effective powers of the object ships are assessed based on CFD. Resistance increase according to the attached appendages and quasi-propulsive efficiency are employed the experimental datas. Speed performance prediction method concerning high speed vessels like a medium patrol boat is developed employing CFD and experimental data.

  • The CRT monitor display system for SONAR signal that are commonly used in ships or naval vessels uses vector scanning method. Therefore the processing circuits of the system is complex. Also because production had been shut down, the supply of parts is difficult as well as high-cost. FPGA -based embedded processor system is flexible to adapting to various applications because it makes simple processing circuits and its core is easily reconfigurable, and provides high speed performance in low-cost. In this paper, we describe an implementation of SONAR signal LCD display system using the FPGA embedded processor system to overcome some weakness of existing CRT system. By changing X-Y Deflection and CRT control blocks of current system into FPGA embedded processor system, our system provides the simplicity, flexibility and low-cost of system configuration, and also real-time acquisition and display of SONAR signal.

  • Recent keywords of the heavy industries are large-scale structure and productivity. Especially, the sizes of the commercial vessels and the offshore structures have been gradually increased to deliver goods and explore or produce oil and natural gas in the Arctic. High heat input welding processes such as electro gas welding (EGW) have been widely used for welding thick steel plates with flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), especially in the shipbuilding industries. Because high heat input welding may cause the detrimental effects on the fracture toughness of the welded joint and the heat affected zone, it is essential to obtain the sufficient toughness of welded joint. There are well known that the fracture toughness like CTOD, CVN, and KIC were very important factors in order to secure the safety of the structures. Furthermore, the welding residual stress should be considered to estimate the unstable fracture in both EGW and FCAW. However, there are no references on the welding residual stress distribution of EGW and FCAW with thick steel plates. Therefore the welding residual stresses were very important elements to evaluate the safety of the welded structure. Based on the measurement results, the characteristics of residual stress distribution through thickness were compared between one-pass electron gas welding and multi-pass flux-cored arc welding. The longitudinal residual stress in the multi-pass flux-cored arc welding is tensile through all thicknesses in the welding fusion zone. Meanwhile, longitudinal residual stress of EGW is tensile on both surfaces and compressive at the inside of the plate. The magnitude of residual stresses by electron gas welding is lower than that by flux-cored arc welding.

  • This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the analysis of strength of medium and small high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a width / ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin car-ferries.

  • Naval ships are particularly required to maintain acoustic and magnetic silence due to their operational characteristics. Among them, underwater magnetic field signals derived by ships are likely to be detected by threats such as surveillance systems and mine systems at close distance. In order to increase the survivability of the vessels, various techniques for reducing the magnetic field signal are being studied and it is necessary to consider not only the magnitude of the magnetic field signal but also the gradient of it. In this paper, we use the commercial electromagnetic finite element analysis tool to predict the induced magnetic field signal of ship's scaled model, and arrange the degaussing coil. And the optimum degaussing current of the coil was derived by applying the particle swarm optimization algorithm considering the gradient constraint. The validity of the optimal degaussing technique is verified analytically by comparing the magnetic field signals after the degaussing with or without gradient constraint.

  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is a technique that can be employed for developing and testing complex real-time embedded systems. HIL simulation provides an effective platform for verifying power management system (PMS) performance of liquefied natural gas carriers, which are high value-added vessels such as offshore plants. However, HIL tests conducted by research institutes, including domestic shipyards, can be protracted. To address the said issue, this study proposes a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based PMS-HIL simulator that comprises a power supply, consumer, control console, and main switchboard. The proposed HIL simulation platform incorporated actual equipment data while conducting load sharing PMS tests. The proposed system was verified through symmetric, asymmetric, and fixed load sharing tests. The proposed system can thus potentially replace the standard factory acceptance tests. Furthermore, the proposed simulator can be helpful in developing additional systems for vessel automation and autonomous operation, including the development of energy management systems.

  • The logistics industry is growing rapidly with China's economic development in recent years. Particularly, the intermodal freight system is becoming the main issue to reduce the logistic costs under the situation that the quantity of cargo transported between Korea and China is continuously increasing. Shift from road transportation to eco-friendly modes such as rail and coastwise shipping is also increasing. The present study suggests technical aspects related to the implementation of intermodal transport system centered on train ferries between two countries with already employed Chinese infrastructure into consideration. Technical assessment of intermodal train ferry system entails not only the vessels but supporting facilities and technologies as well. Port and rail facilities and operating skills for efficient modal shifting, and their standardization is indispensible to the realization of an intermodal train ferry system between the two countries.

  • Corrugated bulkheads have many advantages compared to stiffened bulkheads, and they have thus been used for the cargo tank bulkheads of commercial vessels, such as bulk carriers, product oil carriers, and chemical tankers. Various studies have been carried out to find the optimum corrugation shape for bulk carriers, but optimum design studies for chemical tankers with bulkheads made of high-priced materials are scarce. The purpose of this study is to develop a minimum weight design method for horizontal corrugated bulkheads for a chemical tanker. An evolution strategy (ES) that searches for a reliable global optimum point was applied as an optimization technique, and the structural safety of the optimum design was verified through structural analysis using the finite element method (FEM). The results were compared with those of an existing ship, which showed a weight reduction of about 14% with equivalent structural strength.
