  • Despite the rapid advancement in computing resources, many real-life design and optimization problems in structural engineering involve huge computation costs. To counter such challenges, approximate models are often used as surrogates for the highly accurate but time intensive finite element models. In this paper, surrogates for first-order shear deformation based finite element models are built using a polynomial regression approach. Using statistical techniques like Box-Cox transformation and ANOVA, the effectiveness of the surrogates is enhanced. The accuracy of the surrogate models is evaluated using statistical metrics like $R^2$, $R^2{_{adj}}$, $R^2{_{pred}}$ and $Q^2{_{F3}}$. By combining these surrogates with nature-inspired multi-criteria decision-making algorithms, namely multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), the optimal combination of various design variables to simultaneously maximize fundamental frequency and frequency separation is predicted. It is seen that the proposed approach is simple, effective and good at inexpensively producing a host of optimal solutions.

  • With the advancement of intelligent vehicles and unmanned systems, there is a growing interest in underwater surveys using autonomous marine vehicles (AMVs). This study presents an automated planning strategy for a long-term survey mission using a fleet of AMVs consisting of autonomous surface vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles. Due to the complex nature of the mission, the actions of the vehicle must be of high-level abstraction, which means that the actions indicate not only motion of the vehicle but also symbols and semantics, such as those corresponding to deploy, charge, and survey. For automated planning, the planning domain definition language (PDDL) was employed to construct a mission planner for realizing a powerful and flexible planning system. Despite being able to handle abstract actions, such high-level planners have difficulty in efficiently optimizing numerical objectives such as obtaining the shortest route given multiple destinations. To alleviate this issue, a widely known technique in operations research was additionally employed, which limited the solution space so that the high-level planner could devise efficient plans. For a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed method, various PDDL-based planners with different parameter settings were implemented, and their performances were compared through simulation. The simulation result shows that the proposed method outperformed the baseline solutions by yielding plans that completed the missions more quickly, thereby demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

  • Recently, Confidential computing plays an important role in next-generation cloud technology along with the development of trusted execution environments(TEEs), as it guarantees the trustworthiness of applications despite of untrusted nature of the cloud. Both academia and industry have actively proposed commercialized confidential computing solutions based on Intel SGX technology. However, the lack of clear criteria makes developers difficult to select a proper confidential computing framework among the possible options when implementing TEE-based cloud applications. In this paper, we derive baseline metrics that help to clarify the pros and cons of each framework through in-depth comparative analysis against existing confidential computing frameworks. Based on the comparison, we propose criteria to application developers for effectively selecting an appropriate confidential computing framework according to the design purpose of TEE-based applications.

  • Incident management is significant far the traffic management systems. The management of incidents determines the smoothness of freeway operations. The dynamic nature of incidents and the uncertainty associated with them require solutions based on the incident operator's judgment. Fuzz systems attempt to adapt such human expertise and are designed to replicate the decision making capability of on operator. Fuzzy systems process complex traffic information, and transmit it in a simplified, understandable form to human traffic operators. In this study, fuzzy rules were developed based on data from real incidents on Santa Monica Freeway in LosAngeles. The fuzzy rules ail linguistic based, and hence, user-friendly. A comparison of the results from the linguistic model with the real incident durations indicate that the outputs from the model reliably correspond to real incident durations conditions. The model reliably predicts the freeway incident duration. The modes can thus be used as an effective management tool for freeway incident response systems. The approach could be applied to other problems regarding dispatch systems in transportation.

  • Landfilling is the most commonly adopted method for a large quantity of waste disposal. But, the main concern related to landfills is the generation of leachate. The leachate is high strength wastewater that is usually characterized by the presence of high molecular recalcitrant organics. Several conventional methods are adopted for leachate treatment. However, these methods are only suitable for young leachate, having high biodegradability and low toxicity levels. The mature and stabilized leachate needs advanced technologies for its effective treatment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are very suitable for such complex wastewater treatment as reported in the literature. After going through the literature survey, it can be concluded that Fenton-based approaches are effective for the treatment of various high/low strength wastewaters treatment. The applications of the Fenton-based approaches are widely adopted and well recognized due to their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and reliability for the reduction of high chemical oxygen demand (COD) as reported in several studies. Besides, the process is relatively economical due to fewer chemical, non-sophisticated instruments, and low energy requirements. In this review, the conventional and advanced Fenton's approaches are explained with their detailed reaction mechanisms and applications for landfill leachate treatment. The effect of influencing factors like pH, the dosage of chemicals, nature of reaction matrix, and reagent ratio on the treatment efficiencies are also emphasized. Furthermore, the discussion regarding the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color, increase in biodegradability, removal of humic acids from leachate, combined processes, and the pre/post-treatment options are highlighted. The scope of future studies is summarized to attain sustainable solutions for restrictions associated with these methods for effective leachate treatment.

  • The multi-tenancy and high scalability of the cloud have inspired businesses and organizations across various sectors to adopt and deploy cloud computing. Cloud computing provides cost-effective, reliable, and convenient access to pooled resources, including storage, servers, and networking. Cloud service models, SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, enable organizations, developers, and end users to access resources, develop and deploy applications, and provide access to pooled computing infrastructure. Despite the benefits, cloud service models are vulnerable to multiple security and privacy attacks and threats. The SaaS layer is on top of the PaaS, and the IaaS is the bottom layer of the model. The software is hosted by a platform offered as a service through an infrastructure provided by a cloud computing provider. The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) delivers cloud-based apps through a web browser. The stateless nature of HTTP facilitates session hijacking and related attacks. The Open Web Applications Security Project identifies web apps' most critical security risks as SQL injections, cross-site scripting, sensitive data leakage, lack of functional access control, and broken authentication. The systematic literature review reveals that data security, application-level security, and authentication are the primary security threats in the SaaS model. The recommended solutions to enhance security in SaaS include Elliptic-curve cryptography and Identity-based encryption. Integration and security challenges in PaaS and IaaS can be effectively addressed using well-defined APIs, implementing Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and standard syntax for cloud provisioning.

  • Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are highly dynamic and unstable due to the heterogeneous nature of the communications, intermittent links, high mobility and constant changes in network topology. Currently, some of the most important challenges of VANETs are the scalability problem, congestion, unnecessary duplication of data, low delivery rate, communication delay and temporary fragmentation. Many recent studies have focused on a hybrid mechanism to disseminate information implementing the store and forward technique in sparse vehicular networks, as well as clustering techniques to avoid the scalability problem in dense vehicular networks. However, the selection of intermediate nodes in the store and forward technique, the stability of the clusters and the unnecessary duplication of data remain as central challenges. Therefore, we propose an adaptable destination-based dissemination algorithm (DBDA) using the publish/subscribe model. DBDA considers the destination of the vehicles as an important parameter to form the clusters and select the intermediate nodes, contrary to other proposed solutions. Additionally, DBDA implements a publish/subscribe model. This model provides a context-aware service to select the intermediate nodes according to the importance of the message, destination, current location and speed of the vehicles; as a result, it avoids delay, congestion, unnecessary duplications and low delivery rate.
