  • Industrial accidents have been consistently increased in terms of medical costs, lost work days, and incidence rates every year in Korea. Since the infrastructure of the industry changed shifts rapidly from 1980s in the developing countries such as South Korea, the nature and magnitude of the industrial accidents have also undergone a major shift. The situation is especially severe in small-to-medium sized industry(SMI). This article reports the development of a systematic evaluation system of risk factors specifically for the SMIs. The new approach introduced by this article is geared to the systematic identification and evaluation of the injuries from power press machines using the Analytic Hierarchy Process with the key evaluation data generated and evaluated by the employees on site. A total of 21 companies was studied and surveyed using the hierarchical structures of the cause-effect relationship of the mechanical injuries and their countermeasures. For the relative weighting of each risk factor, separate questionnaire survey was conducted for the selected workers from each company who had worked for more than 10 years in press work. Most participants (48 out of 62) replied that human attributes were the most significant factors for mechanical injuries fellowed by administration, machine, and work environment factors. The result also showed that the self-motivated risk assessment and safety enhancement activities would be an effective and efficient way of managing the risk factors in the SMIs.

  • There is growing evidence that professional work is changing as a result of the application of information technology (IT). However, the impact of information technology on professional work has produced mixed results. Our paper considers the source of these mixed results through a greater analytical attention paid to the nature of professional work. Defined as work involving expertise expressed through abstract and formalized knowledge as well as extensive working knowledge, the professional work logic assumes the greatest autonomy and discretion for workers in collectively controlling work characteristics-division of labor and its permanence, control over education, and control over new entrants and the monitoring and disciplining of existing members. The impact of IT on professional work will be difficult to control and predict without considering the assumptions and tensions within and across the three major types of work logics (Professional, Market and Bureaucratic). Using healthcare as an example, the paper provides various propositions for researching the initiation and effects of ICT design through these three work logics. These propositions illustrate the active role that IS researchers can take in researching an important economic and work-related topic, professional work, and in understanding how ICT affects work-related expertise.

  • Background: Agriculture ranks among the most dangerous trades worldwide. There is, however, still a lack of knowledge on nonfatal injuries in agriculture. The aim of this study was to describe the nature and occurrence of nonfatal injuries in farmers in two counties in central Norway. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to 7,004 farmers in Norway. We asked for information about the respondents and the farm, whether the farmer had had work-related injuries on the farm during the past 12 months, and details about the incidence and seriousness of the injury. Results: A total of 2,699 respondents gave a response rate of 42%. Of the respondents, 249 (9.2%) reported one or more work-related injuries. The most usual cause of injury involved an animal, and >75% of these happened inside the outbuilding. Among these, 17.5% had a consequence of sick leave or a more serious result. When all the accidents were analyzed by stepwise logistic regression, only the variables: works alone, has >3,500 stipulated working hours at the farm, and the type of production were statistical significant explanatory variables for having an injury. Conclusion: Incorporating safety aspects to a greater extend in the design and construction of outbuildings would make a substantial contribution to injury prevention in agriculture.

  • Previous literature has been investigated various aspects of accident occurrence and prevention in construction field. However, those studied were limited in that they only focused on the death accident without considering the loss time accident. Based on this, the goal of current study was to investigate the nature of the loss time accident, and compare the results with the death accident. Results showed that 1) the occurrence rate of death accident was significantly higher in the form work, temporary work, and steel frame work; 2) the temporary work showed significantly higher occurrence rate of the loss time accident and the death accident as compared to others; 3) ratio of the loss time accident to the death accident in domestic construction field was 50:1; 4) fall accident showed biggest occurrence rate in both the loss time accident and the death accident; and 5) more that 80% of workers in both the loss time accident and the death accident was between 41 and 65 years old.

  • Modem soft computing methods, such as neural networks, evolutionary models and fuzzy logic, are mainly inspired by the problem solving strategies the biological systems use in nature. As such, the soft computing methods are fundamentally different from the conventional engineering problem solving methods, which are based on mathematics. In the author's opinion, these fundamental differences are the key to the full understanding of the soft computing methods and in the realization of their full potential in engineering applications. The main theme of this paper is to discuss the fundamental differences between the soft computing methods and the mathematically based conventional methods in engineering problems, and to explore the potential of soft computing methods in new ways of formulating and solving the otherwise intractable engineering problems. Inverse problems are identified as a class of particularly difficult engineering problems, and the special capabilities of the soft computing methods in inverse problems are discussed. Soft computing methods are especially suited for engineering design, which can be considered as a special class of inverse problems. Several examples from the research work of the author and his co-workers are presented and discussed to illustrate the main points raised in this paper.

  • In this study, we investigated the elementary school students' perceptions of the scientific and technological professions by using the 'drawing scientific and technological workplaces'. The subjects were 401 students of 4th and 6th grades at three elementary schools in Seoul. The results revealed that many students drew the interiors of laboratories or factories as scientific and technological workplaces, and explained the nature of the work- place, but students' images were superficial and general. Most students' drawings also exhibited the stereotypical images of science and technology as androcentric and negative perceptions. Students were mainly inclined to perceive that the works relevant to science were experiments, and the works relevant to technology were productions and repairs. Most students answered more than two examples of scientific and technological professions, but their responses were not various and were biased toward basic scientists, blue-collar workers, and repairers. Educational implications of these findings were discussed.

  • This study examines the relation between the quality of leader-member relationship and operational performance of processing enterprises employees in Vietnam, while job satisfaction and innovation are as a mediator variable. In depth interviews are first conducted with five managers and professional workers in five processing enterprises to determine the latent variables and build the structured questionnaire with observed variables. A quantitative survey with 438 employees and managers from 300 processing enterprises was carried out. The method of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Cronbach's alpha analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the reliability, the convergent nature, and the consistency of the concepts. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the proposed model. The result shows that job satisfaction, innovation and operational performance have positive effects on the quality of leader-member relationship. The relationship between leaders and members had indirect impact on employee's operational performance via their job satisfaction and innovation, which illustrates a mediator role of job satisfaction and innovation for employees' performance. The findings of this study suggest that managers need to focus on developing relationship with employees to improve their satisfaction, innovation and performance.

  • In the present context of systemic global crisis, this paper focuses on a sustainable society. Throughout the World there are vast members of the unemployes. A secure job lasting a lifetime has become more and more rare. Nowadays majority of jobs are part-time or temporary. $Andr{\acute{e}}$ Gorz found a solution in a policy of the progessive reduction in labor time. This is the potential which automated production opens up for a culture society. Nevertheless, Gorz's proposal is based on utopion ideals. This paper focuses on a dynamic force for a culture society, especially art, learning and the third sector. Adrienne Goehler underlines that a culture in the broad sense of the word produces economical and social productivity. In this connection Goehler give attention to 'Cultrual Creatives' and the Creative Class. Cultural creatives are comprised of people who have participated in the process of creating a new culture with enlightened creativity. The Creative Class is a class of workers whose job is to create economic growth through innovation. Creativity is important for a sustainable society. Gore and Rifkin both come close to the ecological thinking. Gore claims that ecosystem of nature have a self-organizing capacity. In this context tried to prove this article that ecosystem is closely connected with a creative environment.

  • This study focuses on forces and correlation among such independent factors as the style of leadership, motivation and relationship in order to find out what kind of ingredients have an effect on the employees' organizational commitment in a venture company. It is likely that the organizational commitment of the employees in the organization in a venture company may be different from that of existing enterprises since they differ 100 percent in their nature. In an attempt to prove it, actual corroboration has been made. As a result, it turned out that transformational leadership had a great impact on the organizational commitment while transactional leadership did not; in the motivation factor, the more vision the employees envisage, the more organizational commitment they show followed by management goals and self-admiration; in the relational factor, more openness in the communication led the employees to devote themselves to their companies, which was valid in the range of 90% in the confidence index. This study reveals that there is not much difference between venture and general companies in the factors that affect employees' organizational commitment in the organization. Therefore, the Chief Executive Officer in the venture company should make a favorable environment with transformational leadership and obvious vision through free and open communication with colleagues so that his or her employees can devote themselves to the organization to which they belong, since venture companies are usually staffed by young workers with high education.
