  • Four wave gauges of pressure type were installed for about one month(1992. 2~3) for the analysis of wave agitations induced by the intrusion of long-period incident waves inside and outside of Donghae Harbor. Helmholtz natural period and second peak period of seiche in Donghae Harbor are found to be approximately 17.1 and 5.5 minutes from the spectral analysis of measured long-period wave data. Amplification ratio at Helmholtz natural period reaches about 10 which is five times as lagre as that of Youngil Bay, but wave amplitudes ill harbor were about 10 em during the measurement period which are relatively small.

  • This experimental study investigated on the eddy making effect on the roll motion of a rectangular barge in a two-dimensional wave tank. The structure was used to simulate a simplified rectangular barge in the beam sea condition. The structure with a draft one half of its height was hinged at the center of gravity and free to roll by waves. The rectangular barge was tested with regular waves with a range of wave periods that are shorter, equal to, and longer than its roll natural period. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to obtain the velocity field in the vicinity of the structure. The coupled interactions between the incident wave and the barge were demonstrated by examining the vortical flow fields to elucidate the eddy making effect during the roll motion. For incoming wave with a wave period same as the roll natural period, the barge roll motion was reduced by the eddy making damping effect. At the wave period shorter than the roll natural period, the structure roll motion was slightly reduced by the vertical flow around the barge. However, at the wave period longer than the roll natural period, the eddy making effect due to flow separation at structure corners indeed amplifies the roll motion. This indicates that not only can the eddy making effect damp out the roll motion, it can also increase the roll motion.

  • The main purpose of the current study is to develop the new coefficients for consideration of soil-structure interaction effects to find the elevated tank natural period. Most of the recommended relations to find the natural period just assumed the fixed base condition of elevated tank systems and the soil effects on the natural period are neglected. Two different analytical systems considering soil-structure- fluid interaction effects are recommended in the current study. Achieved results of natural impulsive and convective period, concluded from mentioned models are compared with the results of a numerical model. Two different sets of new coefficients for impulsive and convective periods are developed. The values of the developed coefficients directly depend to soil stiffness values. Additional results show that the soil stiffness not only has significant effects on natural period but also it is effective on liquid sloshing wave height. Both frequency content and soil stiffness have significant effects on the values of liquid wave height.

  • Field measurements of the wind-induced response of two residential reinforced concrete buildings, among the tallest in the world, have been performed during two typhoons. Natural periods and damping values have been determined and compared with other field measurements and empirical predictors. Suitable and common empirical predictors of natural period and structural damping have been obtained that describe the trend of tall, reinforced concrete buildings whose structural vibrations have been measured in the collection of studies in Hong Kong compiled by the authors. This data is especially important as the amount of information known about the dynamic parameters of buildings of these heights is limited. Effects of the variation of the natural period and damping values on the alongwind response of a tall building for serviceability-level wind conditions have been profiled using the gust response factor approach. When using this approach on these two buildings, the often overestimated natural periods and structural damping values suggested by empirical predictors tended to offset each other. Gust response factors calculated using the natural periods and structural damping values measured in the field were smaller than if calculated using design-stage values.

  • In order to develop a floating breakwater, which can efficiently control long period waves, vertical plates are attached in pontoon. Wave control and dynamic behaviors of the newly developed vertical plates type are verified from numerical analysis and hydraulic experiment. As a result, for the wave control and energy dissipation, the newly developed vertical plates type is more efficient than the conventional pontoon type. For the floating body motion, the wave transmission, depending on incident wave period, is decreased at the natural frequency. Dimensionless drift distance has similar trend of the reflection rate of wave transformation near natural frequency except maximum and minimum values. Dimensionless maximum tension is 17 percent of the weight of floating breakwater in case of the conventional pontoon type and 18 percent or 14 percent in case of the newly developed vertical plates type. Thus, it is shown that the wave control is improved by the vertical plates type. In addition, by adjusting the interval of the front and back vertical plate, we would control proper wave control.

  • This experimental study investigated the flow characteristics for regular waves passing a rectangular floating structure in a two-dimensional wave tank. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to obtain the velocity field in the vicinity of the structure. The phase average was used to extract the mean flow and turbulence property from repeated instantaneous PIV velocity profiles. The mean velocity field represented the vortex generation and evolution on both sides of the structure. The turbulence properties, including the turbulence length scale and the turbulent kinetic energy budget were investigated to characterize the flow interaction between the regular wave and the structure. The results shaw the vortex generated near the structure corners, which are known as the eddy-making damping or viscous damping. However, the vortex induced by the wave is longer than the roll natural period of the structure, which presents the phenomena opposing the roll damping effect; that is, the vortex may increase the roll motion under the wave condition longer than the roll natural period.

  • Several roll motion reduction devices are reviewed and suggested for the application in FPSO. The firstly suggested solution is the shape of the bilge. The next is a bilge keel. The last suggestion is the ART (anti-rolling tank). Typical U-tube type ART is designed for a FPSO and examined extensively by model experiment. The model section was made of transparent acryl. Free decay test, forced oscillation test and wave test were carried out at a two-dimensional wave flume. U-tube type ART is effective only when the natural periods of ART and ship are same. Therefore, the divided U-tube type ART with split plate is suggested for the reduction of the roll motion of a FPSO over the wide range of the roll period.

  • The inherent efficiency of a ship would be prior to any other quality factors in ship's safety, because lack of it may give rise to a serious sea casuality even if it were a light mistake in operation. And the representative casualty comes from a deficiency of stability and an operating error combined would be capsizing. The Korean offshore large purseiner looks to have a structural weak point with small range of stability in spite of her big initial metacentric height, and have various type of roll reduction devices in order to cover up the defect. The aim of this study is to grasp for the roll reduction characteristics of the purseiner with bilge keel only and a stern keel additionally attached. The results are summarized as follows; The rolling angle of the model ship was increased in accordance with increase of the wave period and height, especially at close to the natural wave period of her, and the trends were more distinguished in the situation of bilge keel only installation than in the stern keel additionally installed. And stern keel has not noticeable effect on the reduction of the roll in the light ship condition, but has a little effect in full load condition.

  • Experimental study is carried out to verify the advantages of an air chamber structure in controlling the wave transformation and its dynamic responses. The open, cross and vertical mooring systems are employed in experiments to investigate the variations of wave transmission ratio, natural period of the structures and tensile force acting on the mooring line according to the change of the initial air depth inside the air chamber structure. Experimental results show that the air chamber floating structure expresses the smaller wave transmission ratio and tensile force acting on the mooring line than general one without air chamber, expecially in the long period region of incident wave. Therefore, it is concluded that the air chamber structure suggested in this study can play good roles as a wave controlling castal structure, and a substitute structure of a general floating structure.

  • In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge tests were performed for a soil-foundation-structural interaction system in dry sand with various embedded depths and superstructure conditions. Sinusoidal wave, sweep wave and real earthquake were used as input motion with various input acceleration and frequencies. Based on the results, a natural period and an earthquake load for soil-structure interaction system were evaluated by comparing the free-field and foundation accelerations. The natural period of free field is longer than that of the soil-foundation-structure system. In addition, it is confirmed that the earthquake load for soil-foundation-structure system is smaller than that of free-field in short period region. In contrast, the earthquake load for soil-foundation-structure interaction system is larger than that of free-field in long period region. Therefore, the current seismic design method, applying seismic loading of free-field to foundation, could overly underestimate seismic load and cause unsafe design for long period structures, such as high-rise buildings.
