In Korea, most landslides are occurred during the rainy season from June to September and have a shallow failure plane parallel to the slope. For these types of rainfall-induced failures, the most important factors triggering slope unstability is not the increase of pore water pressure but the decrease of the matric suction of unsaturated soils by rainfall infiltration. So it is essential to landslide hazard assessment that defines the characteristics of infiltration in natural slopes. In this study, field measurements have been carried out in order to monitor in-situ volumetric water contents and ground water table, at several depths and locations on a natural slope. The results show that rainfall infiltration is correlated with antecedent water contents, rainfall intensity and total rainfall. The ground water table was varied sensitively by every rainfall event.

The effect of inclination angle on natural convection heat transfer has been studied for water layers. The range of the Raleigh number was from the subcritical value to 1.4${\times}$10$^{7}$ , and the range of the inclination angle, $\theta$, measured from the horizontal was 0$\leq$$\theta$$\leq$180$^{\circ}$. For horizontal water layers, present results agreed well with the results of previous investigators and also showed significant departures from the results of air layers in the turbulent regime. Inclined cylindrical water layers showed secondary maxima in heat transfer, whereas rectangular air layers showed continuous decline of Nusselt number.

Romania aims to adopt and implement the European Union's legislation, also including that for the field of water management. Like other countries, groundwater in Romania is locally polluted from point sources, such as leaking landfills, as well as from diffuse pollution sources, include fertilizers, pesticides and leakages from sewers, in urbanized areas. Diffuse pollution can also occur indirectly, by over-exploitation of groundwater wells, resulting in salt water intrusion, as well as from mining and exploitation of mineral aggregates. Romania has quite an intensive monitoring scheme to measure groundwater quality in phreatic and confined aquifers. The purpose of the work resumed in this paper was to derive natural background levels (NBL) for groundwater in order to distinguish the natural elevated concentrations of some substances (natural phenomena) from point and diffuse pollution (anthropogenic phenomena). Based on these NBLs, threshold values (TV) for groundwater will be set according to the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive and the related Groundwater Directive. This paper describes the results of a study for the derivation of NBL and TV in a pilot Groundwater Body. Also, the process and draft results for extrapolating this work for all Romanian groundwater bodies is explained, as well as points for future consideration with respect to monitoring and management.
The determination of phthalates and adipate in natural mineral water and its container is described. Phthalates and adipate were extracted from natural mineral water by liquid-liquid extraction with methylene chloride, concentrated and then injected in GC-MS (SIM). Phthalates and adipate from 1) PET, cap, label and glue were extracted in Soxhlet with 50 mL of carbon tetrachloride, purified with silicagel and detected with GC-MS (SIM). Peak shapes and quantitation of phthalates and adipate were excellent, with linear calibration curves over a range of $0.1{\sim}10{\mu}g/L$ in water sample ($r^2$ > 0.996) and over a range of $1{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/Kg$ in solid samples ($r^2$>0.994). The detection limits of analytes were $0.002{\sim}0.010{\mu}g/L$ in water and $0.01{\sim}0.02{\mu}g/Kg$ in solid samples. Five kinds of natural mineral water samples, two PETs, two labels, two caps and two glues were quantified by the described procedure. As a results, the concentrations of total phthalates in natural mineral water ranged from ND ~ 1.2 ng/mL. Otherwise, the concentrations of total phthalate extracted from PET ranged from 0.55 ~ 1.2 mg/Kg. We found that the accurate determination of phthalte and adipate in natural mineral water and container must be considered blank correction and the removal of label and glue in PET sample.
The purpose of this study was to understand the degree of natural radon removal efficiency of small-scale water supply systems. Six sites were selected for this study, and data on well characteristics (depth, pumping rate, water tank capacity, distance from well to tap water) were obtained. Water samples both from raw water and three tap waters at each site were collected and analyzed for radon concentration. Average radon removal efficiency of the five sites (A-E) in Nov. 2006 was 26.0% while that of the same sites in Dec. 2006 was 45.6% indicating seasonal difference in natural radon removal efficiency. Meanwhile short-term (April 23, April 30, May 8, 2007) radon removal efficiency from the site F was 44.1-49.0%, implying only a little difference in natural radon removal efficiency. The degree of radon removal at tap water was influenced mainly by pumping rate rather than distance from the well and water tank capacity.
Because a change in the natural frequencies of a structure indicates structural health problems, monitoring the natural frequencies crucial. Long-term measurement for the Uldolmok tidal current power plant structure has shown that its natural frequencies fluctuate with a constant cycle twice a day. In this study, lab-scale tests to investigate the causes of these natural frequency fluctuations were carried out in a circulating water channel. Three independent variables in the tests that could affect the fluctuation of the natural frequencies were the water level, current velocity, and boundary condition between the specimen and the bottom of the circulating water channel. The experimental results were verified with numerical ones using ABAQUS. It was found that the fluctuation of the natural frequencies was governed by a decrease in stiffness due to the boundary condition much more than the effect of added mass. In addition, it was found that the natural frequency would decrease with an increase in the tidal current velocity because of its nonlinearity when the boundary condition was severely deteriorated due to damage.
In the present study, natural fibers (jute, kenaf and henequen) reinforced thermoplastic (poly(lactic acid) and polypropylene) and thermosetting (unsaturated polyester) matrix composites were well fabricated by a compression molding technique using all chopped natural fibers of about 10 mm long, respectively. Prior to green composite fabrication, natural fiber bundles were surface-treated with tap water by static soaking and dynamic ultrasonication methods, respectively. The interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of each green composite system were investigated by means of single fiber microbonding test, 3-point flexural test, and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. The result indicated that the properties of the polymeric resins were significantly improved by incorporating the natural fibers into the resin matrix and also the properties of untreated green composites were further improved by the water treatment done to the natural fibers used. Also, the property improvement of natural fiber-reinforced green composites strongly depended on the treatment method. The interfacial and mechanical results agreed with each other.

Background: In aged skin, degradation of collagen fibers, which occupy the majority of the extracellular matrix in the dermis, and changes of aquaporin 3 (AQP3) and skin constituents, such as hyaluronic acid and ceramide, cause wrinkles and decrease skin moisturization to contribute to dryness and lower elasticity skin. Red ginseng (RG) is used as a cosmetic and food material and is known to protect from UVB-induced cell death, increase skin hydration, prevent wrinkles, and have an antioxidative effect. But, in general, RG used as a material is the soluble liquid portion in the solvent, and the part that is not soluble in the solvent is discarded. Thus, we made the whole RG into microgranulation and dispersed in water to produce gel form for using entire RG, and it was named red ginseng NaturalGEL (RG NGEL). Methods: RG NGEL was investigated for matrix metalloproteinases inhibitory activity, induction of Type I collagen, AQP3, hyaluronan synthetase 2, serine palmitoyl transferase, ceramide synthase 3, and filaggrin expression and compared with RG water extract. Results: RG NGEL reduced the levels of UV-induced matrix metalloproteinases and increased Type I collagen in human fibroblast cells and upregulated AQP3, hyaluronan synthetase 2, serine palmitoyl transferase, ceramide synthase 3, and filaggrin expressions in human keratinocytes compared with RG water extract. Conclusion: RG NGEL has the potential as an effective reagent for antiaging cosmetics to improve wrinkle formation and skin hydration.
Liquid metal-cooled reactors use various passive safety systems driven by natural circulation. Investigating these safety systems experimentally is more advantageous by using a simulant. Although numerous experimental approaches have been applied to natural circulation-driven passive safety systems using simulants, there has been no clear validation of the similarity law. To validate the similarity law experimentally, SINCRO-V experiment was conducted using Wood's metal and water for simulant of the Wood's metal. A pair of SINCRO-V facilities with length-scale ratio of 14.1:1 for identical Bo' was investigated, which was the main similarity parameter in temperature field simulation. In the experimental range of 0.2-1.0% of decay heat, the temperature distribution characteristics of the small water facility were very similar to that of the large Wood's metal facility. The temperature of the Wood's metal predicted by the water experiment showed good agreement with the actual Wood's metal temperature. Despite some error factors like discordance of Gr' and property change along the temperature, the water experiment predicted the Wood's metal temperature with an error of 27%. The validity of the similarity law was confirmed by the SINCRO-V experiments.

The understanding and prediction of the behavior of flow in open channels are important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Recently, frequent drought has increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows for reserving instream flow. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. Several tests were performed in developed all elements(4-Node, 6-Node, 8-Node elements) for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. The U-shaped channel of flow and natural river of flow were performed for tests. The results were compared with these of laboratory experiments and RMA-2 model. Such results showed that solutions of high order elements were better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Also, the suggested model displayed reasonable velocity distribution compare to RMA-2 model in meandering domain for application of natural river flow. Accordingly, the developed finite element model is feasible and produces reliable results for simulation of two dimensional natural river flow. Also, One contribution of this study is to present that results can lead to significant gain in analyzing the accurate flow behavior associated with hydraulic structure such as weir and water intake station and flow of chute and pool.
