It is challenging to simultaneously estimate parameters in a stock-recruitment relationship, steepness, and natural mortality rate with the other parameters within an age-structured assessment model even in a data-rich situation. Such a problem leads to uncertainty in estimates of management references such as maximum sustainable yield (MSY), which are affected by those components. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of those parameters on MSY by analyzing the process of estimating the MSY. For illustration, we used two data sets: The chub mackerel Scomber japonicus in the Korean waters and the yellowtail flounder Limanda ferruginea in the Southern New England-Mid Atlantic. As a result, the natural mortality rate influenced spawning stock biomass per recruit, yield per recruit, and MSY, while steepness affected MSY. A sensitivity analysis enabled us to estimate the natural mortality rate and steepness. The optimal set of steepness and natural mortality was 1.0 and 0.37 per year for the chub mackerel, and 0.35, and 0.8 per year for the yellowtail flounder, respectively.
Population ecological characteristics of growth and mortality play an important role in understanding the population dynamics of marine mammals. The instantaneous coefficients of natural and bycatch mortality were estimated for minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in Korean waters using a population assessment model composed of bycatch and abundance data. The survivorship curve of this population was fitted to the data, and then the curve was revised using age-specific relative bycatchability coefficients ($q_t$). Instantaneous coefficients of natural and bycatch mortality of minke whales were estimated as 0.024/year and 0.076/year, respectively, and from this the survival rate was estimated as 0.905. This estimated survival rate was comparable to other cetaceans in other regions. The $q_t$ for this population ranged from 0.020 to 0.193. The revised survival rates were higher when the $q_t$ was taken into account. The mortality coefficient, survival rate, $q_t$ and survivorship curves had not previously been determined for minke whale in this area. This estimate could serve as fundamental information to assess the status of this population and for conservation and rational management.
The present study aims to analyze the biological aspects and population dynamics of Indian mackerel in Barru waters. Data was collected in Barru for 11 months, from June 2022 to April 2023. The observed parameters of biological aspects included gonadal maturation stages (GMSs), size at first gonadal maturation, and length-weight relationship. Meanwhile, the aspects of population dynamics encompass age group, growth, mortality rate, and exploitation rate. Data analysis consisted of morphological selection of general maturation stages, Spearman-Kärber method in estimating gonadal first maturation size, Bhattacharya method in identifying age group, von Bertalanffy function through FISAT II to measure growth (L∞ and K), Pauly Model to estimate mortality rate, Beverton & Holt Model to estimate Y/R, and virtual population analysis (VPA) analysis to estimate stock and fish yield. The results demonstrated that GMS I was observed to be dominant, followed by stages II and III. The initial gonadal maturation was estimated to be 17.98-19.28 cm (FL) for females and 17.98-19.27 cm (FL) for males. The length-weight relationship in male and female Indian mackerels indicated a positive allometric growth. The mode grouping analysis results from the fork length measurement revealed three age groups. It was also identified that the asymptotic length (L∞) = 29.5 cm (fork length), growth rate coefficient (K) = 0.46 per year, and theoretical age at zero length (t0) = -0.3576 per year. Total mortality (Z) = 2.67 per year, natural mortality (M) = 1.10 per year, fishing mortality (F) = 1.57 per year, and exploitation rate (E) = 0.59, the actual Y/R = 0.083 gram/recruitment, and optimal Y/R 0.03 gram/recruitment. Fishing mortality is higher than the natural mortality rate, and a high exploitation value (E > 0.5) also reflects over-exploitation. VPA analysis on fish yields and stock estimation reported a highly exploited rate between the 11.5 cm and 14.5 cm length classes and an exceeding current yield of 467.07 tons/year with a recommended yield of 233.53 tons/year to ensure population sustainability.

We investigated the population ecology of blackthroat seaperch, Doederleinia berycoides, from samples collected in the southern seas of Korea from January to December, 2006. Population ecological parameters included survival rate, the instantaneous coefficient of natural and fishing mortality, and age at first capture. The survival rate (S) of blackthroat seaperch was estimated as 0.4966 using the catch curve method. The instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 0.8598/year. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was estimated as 0.4694/year. From the estimates of Z and M, the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) was calculated as 0.3904/year. The age at first capture ($t_c$), based on the Pauly method, was 2.87 years.
Data and pedigree information for Lori-Bakhtiari sheep used in this study were 6,239 records of lamb mortality from 246 sires and 1,721 dams, collected from 1989 through 2007 from a Lori-Bakhtiari flock at Shooli station in Shahrekord. The traits investigated were cumulative lamb mortality from birth up to 7 days, up to 14 days, up to 21 days, and up to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 months of age. The models included fixed factors that had significant effects and random direct genetic, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Variance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood procedure applying three animal models with and without maternal and common environmental effects. The overall mean of cumulative lamb mortality rate was 22.95% from birth to 1 year of age, while the overall mortality rate up to 3 and from 3 to 6 months of age was 6.14% and 12.76%, respectively. The mortality rate after 6 months of age declined as the lambs grew older. The age of dam had no important effect on lamb mortality. The type of birth was more important during the preweaning period than at later ages, and lamb mortality rate was higher in twins. The year of birth, month of birth and sex of lamb significantly (p${\leq}$0.01) affected the cumulative lamb mortality rate at all ages. The least square mean of mortality during the final one-third of the lambing period was higher than the first and middle onethird of the lambing period. Male lambs were found to be at a higher risk of mortality than females. Birth weight of the lamb had a highly significant (p${\leq}$0.01) effect on lamb mortality at all ages as a quadratic regression. Direct and maternal heritability estimates of lamb mortality ranged from 0.01 to 0.13 and 0.01 to 0.05, respectively. Direct heritability increased with age of lamb, while maternal effects (genetic and common environmental) were important in the preweaning period. These results indicate that lamb mortality can be reduced first through farm management practices and secondly by genetic selection. Both animal and maternal effects should be considered in breeding programmes for reducing lamb mortality at preweaning.

Estimations on population ecological parameters of the small yellow croaker, Larimichthy polyactis in Korean waters, were calculated using catch data based on coastal and offshore drift gillnet fishery and biological data from 2010 to 2012. The population ecological parameters included survival rate, instantaneous coefficient of natural and fishing mortality and age/length at first capture. The survival rate (S) of the small yellow croaker was estimated to be 0.20 from catch curve method. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.46/year with Alverson and Carney method. The instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 1.611/year, used to be transformed the survival rate and the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) were 1.153/year. The length at first capture ($L_c$) was 19.1cm by Pauly method, and the age at first capture ($t_c$) was 1.303 years of the small yellow croaker by the coastal and offshore drift gillnet fishery.
Tagged and untagged sea urchins, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus (A. Agassiz) were reared for 84 days in the laboratory, Vinyl tape and trapall paper were used as tag materials. The natural mortality, mortality by predation and shedding rate of tags of the tagged groups were examined, and the results were compared with those of untagged control group. The results of Chi-square test of natural mortality between tagged and control groups were very significative, however, the comparison between the two tagged groups was insignificative. No effect of tag attachment seems to be present at the point of natural predation by starfish, and $x^2-test$ between two the tagged groups on the loss rate of tags showed also insignificance. The mortality shortly after tagging seems to be negligible, and the distinct decreasing effect on growth due to tag attachment was not revealed because of insufficient individuals and rearing periods.
This study is to estimate population ecological parameters, including growth parameters, survival rates, instantaneous coefficients of natural and fishing mortalities, and age at first capture, as well as growth rates at age of the hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus Linne in Korean waters. For describing the growth of the hairtail, three growth models were fitted, and the von Bertalanffy growth model was adopted for the purpose of the further stock assessment work. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from a nonlinear regression using EXCEL Solver were $L_\infty=46.01cm$, K=0.3868, and $t_0=-0.3220$. Annual survival rate (S) of the hairtail was estimated to be 0.277 (variance=0.00035) and the instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.441/year. Instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) for the recent years was calculated as 0.843/year, implying an impact from fishing about two times greater than that of natural mortality. The age at first capture $(t_c)$ was estimated to be 0.787 years, which is much younger age than $50\%$ mature age. Finally, the growth rates at age were estimated.
Tagging method, recapture frequencies and mortalities were investigated to obtain the basic data for the effective release technique of abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Tagged and untagged H. discus hannai were reared for 90 days in the laboratory. Attachment of plastic piece by Alteco was used as tag material. The growth, mortality and falling rate of tags were examined. Data from stock in natural condition showed that fishing rate, fishing mortality and natural mortality of tagged group were 0.04, 0.0195 and 0.4652, respectively.
To understand the detrimental effects of triclosan on Java medaka (Oryzias javanicus) embryos, fertilized embryos were exposed to different concentrations (1, 10, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 ㎍ l-1) of triclosan until hatching. Then, we examined the survival rate and developmental parameters as well as alterations in antioxidant constituents and DNA damage markers. The results showed dose-dependent mortality, hatching delays, and developmental abnormalities in the embryos. Additionally, there were significant increases in oxidative stress parameters and antioxidant responses, along with elevated DNA damage. These findings suggest that sublethal concentrations of triclosan induce toxic effects through oxidative stress on Java medaka embryos, as evidenced by changes in in vivo parameters and biochemical constituents.
