The existing flow regime map on mixed convection in vertical cylinders was investigated through an analysis of original literatures and its re-formation. The original literatures related to the existing map were reviewed. Using the investigated data and heat transfer correlations, the map was redrawn independently, and compared with the existing map. The redrawn map showed that mixed convection regime was not curved lines but straight lines and the transition regime was unable to be reproduced. Unlike the existing map with a little data, there are lots of data in the redrawn map. The reviews revealed that the existing map used the data selectively among the experimental and theoretical results, and a detailed description for lines forming mixed convection and transition regime was not provided. While considerable studies on mixed convection have been performed since that of Metais and Eckert, the existing map has still been used as the best method to distinguish natural, forced and mixed convection regime.

This work investigated the optimal condition for an uniform deposition growth rate in the vertical cylindric CVD chamber. Heat transfer, surface chemical reaction and mass diffusion in the flow field of CVD chamber h,id been computed using Fluent v5.3 code. A SIMPLE based finite Volume Method (FVM) was adopted to solve the fully elliptic equations for momentum, temperature and concentration of a chemical species. The numerical analysis results show good agreements with the measurements obtained by N. Yoshikawa. The results obtained by the numerical analysis showed that the film growth rate in the center of a susceptor is increasing, as the inner flow approaches to the forced convection. To the contrast, as it approaches to the natural convection, that in the outside of a susceptor is increasing. As the Reynolds number increases, the uniformity may not hold due to the larger temperature gradient at a susceptor surface. Therefore, when the temperature gradient on the surface of a susceptor is zero, the film growth rate becomes uniform on most surface.

A set of stability equations is formulated for natural convection flows adjacent to a vertical isothermal surface melting in cold pure water. It takes account of the nonparallelism of the base flows. The melting rate is regarded as a blowing velocity at the ice surface. The numerical solutions of the linear stability equations which constitute a two-point boundary value problem are accurately obtained for various values of the density extremum parameter $R=(T_m-T_{\infty})/(T_0-T_{\infty})$ in the range $0.3{\leq}R{\leq}0.6$, by using a computer code COLNEW. The blowing effects on the base flow becomes more significant as ambient temperature ($T_{\infty}$) increases to $T_{\infty}=10^{\circ}C$. The maximum decrease of heat transfer rate is about 6.4 percent. The stability results show that the melting at surface causes the critical Grashof number $G^*$ and the maximum frequency of disturbances to decrease. In comparision with the results for the conventional parallel flow model, the nonparallel flow model has a higher critical Grashof number but has lower amplification rates of disturbances than does the parallel flow model. The spatial amplification contours exhibit that the selective frequency $B_0$ of the nonparallel flow model is higher than that of the parallel flow model and that the effects of melting are rather small. The present study also indicates that the selective frequency $B_0$ can be easily predicted by the value of the frequency parameter $B^*$ at $G^*$, which comes from the neutral stability results of the nonparallel flow model.

An absorption chiller-heater using only a natural refrigerant hardly causes any environmental pollution. In an absorption chiller-heater, the performance of its high-temperature generator, which uses exhaust gases, is essential to achieving superior system performance. To investigate the performance of such a high-temperature generator, a laboratory-scale high-temperature generator working with exhaust gases was designed and tested. Changes in the performance of the high-temperature generator as a function of inlet conditions of the absorbing solution, such as air inlet temperature and mass flow, were investigated. It was observed that when the air mass flow rate ratio was increased from 80% to 120%, the heat capacity was increased by 30%, 33%, 34%, and 37%, respectively. Additionally, when the air inlet temperature was elevated from $170^{\circ}C$ to $210^{\circ}C$ for absorption solution concentrations of 56%, 55%, 545, and 53%, the heat capacity increased by 140%, 160%, 220%, and 224%, respectively.

It is essential to understand the complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupled behavior in the engineered barrier system and natural barrier system to secure the high-level radioactive waste repository's long-term safety. The heat from the high-level radioactive waste induces thermal pressurization and vaporization of groundwater in the repository system. Groundwater inflow affects the saturation variation in the engineered barrier system, and the saturation change influences the heat transfer and multi-phase flow characteristics in the buffer. Due to the complexity of the coupled behavior, a numerical simulation is a valuable tool to predict and evaluate the THMC interaction effect on the disposal system and safety assessment. To enhance the knowledge of THMC coupled interaction and validate modeling techniques in geological systems. DECOVALEX, an international cooperation project, was initiated in 1992, and KAERI has participated in the projects since 2008 in Korea. In this study, we introduced the main contents of all tasks in the DECOVALEX-2023, the current DECOVALEX phase, to the rock mechanics and geotechnical researchers in Korea.
Effects of various drying conditions of agar gel on the physico-chemical properties of dried agar were investigated. For drying of the agar gel$(1.0{\times}1.0{\times}34.0cm)$ by means of sun drying, simple solar drying, hot-air drying ($30^{\circ}C$, control, natural convection), hot-air drying ($30^{\circ}C$, pretreatment, natural convection) and freeze drying, it took 96, 75, 67, 50 and 21 hours, respectively. The gel strengths of dried agar gel prepared by sun drying, solar drying, freeze drying and spray drying were320, 370, 270 and $360g/cm^2$, respectively and that of hot air-dried agar gel was influenced by drying temperature, pretreatment an mode of heat transfer. The gel strength, the gelation temperature and other quality index of spray-dried agar were not inferior to those of sun-dried agar, but it was not expected to be economical because of it recovery rate. In case of hot air drying, the gel strength value of agar increased as the drying rate increased. No significant differences among various products were noted in the gelation temperature, the melting temperature, the ash and $SO_3$ content.
The efficiency of energy transfer by a population of the farmed pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas was studied during culture period of 10 months July 1979-April 1980, in Geoje-Hansan Bay near Chungmu City. Energy use by the farmed oyster population was calculated from estimates of half-a-month unit age specific natural mortality rate and data on growth, gonad output, shell organic matter production and respiration. Total mortality during the culture period was estimated approximate $36\%$ from data on survivor individual number per cluster. Growth may be dual consisted of a curved line during the first half culture period (July-November) and a linear line in the later half period (December-April). The first half growth was approximated by the von Bertalanffy growth model; shell height, $SH=6.33\;(1-e^{0.2421(t+0.54)})$, where t is age in half-a-month unit. In the later half growth period shell height was related to t by SH=4.44+0.14t. Dry meat weight (DW) was related to shell height by log $DW=-2.2907+2.589{\cdot}log\;SH,\;(2, and/or log $DW=-5.8153+7.208{\cdot}log\;SH,\;(5. Size specific gonad output (G) as calculated by condition index of before and after the spawning season, was related to shell height by $G=0.0145+(3.95\times10^{-3}{\times}SH^{2.9861})$. Shell organic matter production (SO) was related to shell height by log $SO=-3.1884+2.527{\cdot}1og\;SH$. Size and temperature specific respiration rate (R) as determined in biotron system with controlled temperature, was related to dry meat weight and temperature (T) by log $R=(0.386T-0.5381)+(0.6409-0.0083T){\cdot}log\;DW$. The energy used in metabolism was calculated from size, temperature specific respiration and data on body composition. The calorie contents of oyster meat were estimated by bomb calorimetry based on nitrogen correction. The assimilation efficiency of the oyster estimated directly by a insoluble crude silicate method gave $55.5\%$. From the information presently available by other workers, the assimilation efficiency ranges between $40\%\;and\;70\%$. Twenty seven point four percent of the filtered food material expressed by energy value for oyster population was estimated to have been rejected as pseudofaeces : $17.2\%$ was passed as faeces; $35.04\%$ was respired and lost as heat; $0.38\%$ was bounded up in shell organics; $2.74\%$ was released as gonad output, $2.06\%$ was fell as meat reducing by mortality. The remaining $15.28\%$ was used as meat production. The net efficiency of energy transfer from assimilation to meat production (yield/assimilation) of a farm population of the oyster was estimated to be $28\%$ during culture period July 1979-April 1980. The gross efficiency of energy transfer from ingestion to meat production (yield/food filtered) is probably between $11\%\;and\;20\%$.

An irrigated-maize agroecosystem is viewed as an open thermodynamic system upon which solar radiation impresses a large gradient that moves the system away from equilibrium. Following the imperative of the second law of thermodynamics, such agroecosystem resists and reduces the externally applied gradient by using all means of this nature-human coupled system acting together as a nonequilibrium dissipative process. The ultimate purpose of our study is to test this hypothesis by examining the energetics of agroecosystem growth and development. As a first step toward this test, we employed the eddy covariance flux data from 2003 to 2014 at the AmeriFlux NE1 irrigated-maize site at Mead, Nebraska, USA, and analyzed the energetics of this agroecosystem by scrutinizing its radiation, energy and entropy exchange. Our results showed: (1) more energy capture during growing season than non-growing season, and increasing energy capture through growing season until senescence; (2) more energy flow activity within and through the system, providing greater potential for degradation; (3) higher efficiency in terms of carbon uptake and water use through growing season until senescence; and (4) the resulting energy degradation occurred at the expense of increasing net entropy accumulation within the system as well as net entropy transfer out to the surrounding environment. Under the drought conditions in 2012, the increased entropy production within the system was accompanied by the enhanced entropy transfer out of the system, resulting in insignificant net entropy change. Drought mitigation with more frequent irrigation shifted the main route of entropy transfer from sensible to latent heat fluxes, yielding the production and carbon uptake exceeding the 12-year mean values at the cost of less efficient use of water and light.
The productivity and demand of porous material has been increasing by development of industry and increasing income. In particular, the fire caused by using wood flour risks wood processing industry and stock farm. The heat transfer of wood flour is carried into the depth direction by effect of oxidizer around flame, flame sometimes is progressed as smoldering. In the case of progressing as combustion fire, identifying the location of fire is difficult, and it leads to failing fire aid fire fighting. Therefore potential cause is acted as raising additional damage. This paper conducts experiments of downward deep seated fire of natural convection conditions. The samples is New Zealand wood flour that is demanded much in the domestic and oversea market. In this experiment, temperature of deep seated side is measure by changing wood flour density in holder The densities used in experiment are 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%. As a result, the tendency of temperature inside decreases as wood flour density increases. But, in the case of density which is above $0.2140g/cm^3$, the phenomenon, decreasing temperature, is not shown. The result of measurement show that average flame spread speed of wood flour is 0.249 mm/min.
Chlorinated aromatic compounds are one of the largest groups of environmental pollutants as a result of world-wide distribution by using them as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, solvents, hydraulic and heat transfer fluids, plasticizers, and intermediates for chemical synthesis. Because of their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation, the compounds contaminated ubiquitously in the biosphere has attracted public concerns in terms of serious influences to wild lives and a human being, such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and disturbance in endocrine systems. The biological recalcitrance of the compounds is caused by the number, type, and position of the chlorine substituents as well as by their aromatic structures. In general, the carbon-halogen bonds increase the recalcitrance by increasing electronegativity of the substituent, so that the dechlorination of the compounds is focused as an important mechanism for biodegradation of chlorinated aromatics, along with the cleavage of aromatic rings. The removal of the chlorine substituents has been known as a key step for degradation of chlorinated aromatic compounds under aerobic condition. This can occur as an initial step via oxygenolytic, reductive, and hydrolytic mechanisms. The studies on the biochemistry and genetics about microbial dechlorination give us the potential informations for microbial degradation of xenobiotics contaminated in natural microcosms. Such investigations might provide biotechnological approaches to solve the environmental contamination, such as designing effective bioremediation systems using genetically engineered microorganisms.
