An air-fuel ratio control is essential in reducing hazardous exhaust emissions from a compressed natural gas(CNG) engine, and can be accomplished by accurate control of gas injection flow. In this study, theoretical research was conducted on injection characteristics of a solenoid gas injector, and injection experiments for calibration and analysis were performed. Various factors for gas injection flow such as injection pressure, gas temperature, and supply voltage are studied. A dynamic flow equation of the natural gas was proposed on the basis of flow dynamics theories and results of the injection experiment. The verification of the dynamic flow equation of the solenoid injector was carried out with a large CNG-engine applied to an urban bus. Air-fuel ratio control experiments were conducted in both steady and transient state. Results of injection experiments for the solenoid injector and the CNG-engine was proved the control method proposed herein to be effective.

Dual-fuel engines are being researched with emphasis on the possible types of natural gas supply systems. Hence, a three-dimensional combustion model by using finite volume method was developed to provide a fundamental understanding of the auto-ignition of pilot distillate and subsequent burning of natural gas, when the natural gas as well as the distillate was directly injected into a quiescent diesel engine like combustion bomb tests and the numerical results were investigated for the mixed combustion phenomena. With high-pressure natural gas injection, it was found that the gaseous fuel injection characteristics had to be well harmonised with that of the pilot distillate. For better combustion efficiency, however, further researches are required for the optimisation of injection system in the existence of air motion.
Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel of internal combustion engines. In this paper, the combustion and emission characteristics were investigated on a natural gas engine at two different fuel injection timings during the intake stroke. The results show that fuel injection timing affects combustion processes. The optimum spark timing (MBT) achieving the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is related to fuel injection timing and air fuel ratio. At MBT spark timing, late fuel injection timing delays ignition timing and prolongs combustion duration in most cases. But fuel injection timing has little effect on IMEP at fixed lambdas. The coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP is dependent on air fuel ratio, throttle positions and fuel injection timings at MBT spark timing. The COV of IMEP increases with lambda in most cases. Late fuel injection timings can reduce the COV of IMEP at part loads. Moreover, engine-out CO and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions can be reduced at late fuel injection timing.

For a sequential port fuel injection natural gas engine, its combustion and emission characteristics at low loads are crucial to meet light duty vehicle emission regulations. Fuel injection timing is an important parameter related to the mixture formation in the cylinder. Its effect on the combustion and emission characteristics of a natural gas engine were investigated at 0.2 MPa brake mean effective pressure (BMEP)/2000 rpm and 0.26 MPa BMEP/1500 rpm. The results show that early fuel injection timing is beneficial to the reduction of the coefficient of variation (COV) of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) under lean burn conditions and to extending the lean burn limits at the given loads. When relative air/fuel ratio is over 1.3, fuel injection timing has a relatively large effect on engine.out emissions. The levels of NOx emissions are more sensitive to the fuel injection timing at 0.26 MPa BMEP/1500 rpm. An early fuel injection timing under lean burn conditions can be used to control engine out NOx emissions.

Performance and emissions with different diesel injection methods were analyzed in a natural gas-diesel, dual-fuel engine under low-load conditions. Natural gas was supplied to intake port during the intake stoke to form a natural gas-air premixed mixture for all methods. Diesel was injected directly into the cylinder during the compression stroke in three ways: early injections, late injections, and a combination of early and late injections. The early injections had the highest thermal efficiency among the three methods owing to its highest combustion efficiency. The wide dispersion of diesel before the combustion initiation also allowed superior emissions characteristics.
This basic study is required to examine spray or jet behavior depending on fuel phase. In this study, analyses of diesel fuel(n-Tridecane, $C_{13}H_{28}$) spray and natural gas fuel(Methane, $CH_4$) jet under high temperature and pressure are performed by a general-purpose program, ANSYS CFX release 11.0, and the results of these are compared with experimental results of diesel fuel spray using the exciplex fluorescence method. The simulation results of diesel spray is analyzed by using the combination of Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lagrangian Particle Tracking(LPT) and of a natural gas jet is analyzed by using Multi-Component Model(MCM). There are two study variables considered, that is, ambient pressure and injection pressure. In a macroscopic analysis, the higher ambient pressure is, the shorter spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. And the higher injection pressure is, the longer spray or jet tip penetration is at each time after start of injection. When liquid fuel is injected, droplets of the fuel need some time to evaporate. However, when natural gas fuel is injected, the fuel does not need time to evaporate. Gas fuel consists of minute particles. Therefore, the gas fuel is mixed with the ambient gas more quickly at the initial time of injection than the liquid fuel is done. The experimental results also validate the usefulness of this analysis.

The substitution of conventional fuel oil by alternative fuels is of immense interest due to liquid oil shortage and requirements of emission control standard. Among the alternative fuels, natural gas may be the most rational fuel, because of its widespread resource and clean est burning. Meanwhile, engine simulation is of great importance in engine development. Hence a zero-dimensional combustion model was developed for dual-fuel system. Natural gas was injected directly into the cylinder and small amount of distillate was used to provide the ignition kernel for natural gas burning. The intake air and exhaust gas flow was modeled by filling and emptying method. Although the single zone approach has an inherent limitation, the model showed promise as a predictive tool for engine performance. Its simulation was also made to see how the engine performance was influenced by the fuel injection timings and amount of each fuel.
Natural gas fuel has known to be very promising in terms of abundancy and economic value. Therefore it is widely treated as research topics in a variety field of production, storage and utilization. Natural gas has become one of the major sources for the power generation by using internal combustion engines(ICE). Development of natural gas fuel injection device should be preceded to realize a reliable natural gas fuel supply system for a MW class power generation reciprocating ICE. In this research, an injection valve which consists of solenoid and body part with a moving plate was designed and its dynamic performance was experimented in the engine-like environment. Displacement length and diameter of an armature and diameter of a solenoid coil were tested at former study. In this research the effect of materials of solenoid core, size of main housing inlet and supply gas pressure are examined.
After the recent fabrication of diesel vehicle exhaust gas by Volkswagen, nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and particulate matter (PM) are drawing attention as representative pollutants included in exhaust gas. When gasoline and diesel fuels are combusted through direct injection into a combustion chamber at high pressure, PM emission is actually increased. To find a solution to this problem, a basic study was conducted to derive an optimized variable for combustion of compressed natural gas (CNG) by applying CNG, acknowledged as a clean fuel, to direct injection system. The essence of this study is in the introduction of a radical ignition technology for compressed natural gas (RI-CNG) in a sub-chamber type engine. The direct injection system was applied to a sub-chamber to remove residual gas from previous combustion cycle. In addition, optimal mixer distribution was achieved by precisely setting ignition timing based on fuel injection timing and excess air ratio.

In order to investigate the reduction of NO emissions, natural gas was fueled for two-stage combustion apparatus. NO and CO emissions were described by five variables: total air ratio, primary air ratio, secondary air injection position, secondary air injection velocity, and swirl ratio. It was mainly observed that, as the primary air ratios of 0 and 0.4 NO emission decreased with increasing the secondary air injection position and secondary air injection velocity. The effect of weak swirl on NO emission was found to be insignificant.
