During the last two decades the laser beam has progressed from a sophisticated laboratory apparatus to an adaptable and viable industrial tool. Especially, in its welding mode, the laser offers high travel speed, low distortion, and narrow fusion and heat-affected zones (HAZ). The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. Although high-power laser beams have been combined with the plasma from a gas tungsten arc (GTA) torch for use in welding as early as 1980, recent work at the Ohio State University has employed a low power laser beam to initiate, direct, and concentrate a gas tungsten arcs. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process known as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma (LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well focused melted spots.

To a series of vibration records obtained from experimental modal testing using a fixed hammer and roving accelerometers for greenhouse arch structures, modal parameters such as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are extracted by applying the two most advanced system identification methods in the frequency-domain up to now, so-called PolyMAX and FDD. The former involves both input and output data, while the latter utilizes only the output data. The possibility of determining the static buckling load, detecting damages, etc., for very slender steel-pipe arches by means of a non-destructive testing method based on vibration measurements is primarily investigated. The extracted modal parameters generally correlated well with those obtained using finite element analysis, demonstrating promising results for further on-going research.

In this paper, a model updating procedure based on the response surface method combined with the multi-objective optimization was proposed and applied for updating of the FE models representing a low-rise reinforced concrete building before and after the seismic retrofit. The dynamic properties to be matched were obtained from vibration tests using a small shaker system. By varying the structural parameters according to the central composite design, analysis results from the initial FE model using a commercial software were collected and used to produce two regression functions each of which representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The two functions were used as the objective functions for multi-objective optimization. Final solution was determined by examining the Pareto solutions with one iteration. The parameters representing the stiffnesses of existing concrete, masonry, connection stiffness in expansion joint, new concrete, retrofitted members with steel section jacketing were selected and identified.
In this Paper, the mechanical behavior of two reかangular plates spot-welded under free vibration is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate the effect of thickness of reinforced plates with equivalent thickness. The results of this the investigation are compared with detailed finite element analysis end experiments of the plates spot-welded for various parameters, such as aspect ratio, arm ratio, and distance ratio of spot-welding Points. The conclusion obtained are as followed. 1. The effect thickness due to spot-weld is very large, such as 55% in comparison with area ratio of spot-welding joint is just 4.52%. 2 The effect of thickness with respect to the distance ratio is maximized when the distance ratio is 0.4.
Wind measurements were made on the Canton Tower at a height of 461 m above ground during the Typhoon Vincente, the wind-induced accelerations and displacements of the tower were recorded as well. Comparisons of measured wind parameters at upper level of atmospheric boundary layer with those adopted in wind tunnel testing were presented. The measured turbulence intensity can be smaller than the design value, indicating that the wind tunnel testing may underestimate the crosswind structural responses for certain lock-in velocity range of vortex shedding. Analyses of peak factors and power spectral density for acceleration response shows that the crosswind responses are a combination of gust-induced buffeting and vortex-induced vibrations in the certain range of wind directions. The identified modal frequencies and mode shapes from acceleration data are found to be in good agreement with existing experimental results and the prediction from the finite element model. The damping ratios increase with amplitude of vibration or equivalently wind velocity which may be attributed to aerodynamic damping. In addition, the natural frequencies determined from the measured displacement are very close to those determined from the acceleration data for the first two modes. Finally, the relation between displacement responses and wind speed/direction was investigated.

The study presents a new hybrid data-driven method by combining radial basis functions neural networks (RBF-NN) with the Jaya algorithm (JA) to provide effective structural health monitoring of arch dams. The novelty of this approach lies in that only one user-defined parameter is required and thus can increase its effectiveness and efficiency, as compared to other machine learning techniques that often require processing a large amount of training and testing model parameters and hyper-parameters, with high time-consuming. This approach seeks rapid damage detection in arch dams under dynamic conditions, to prevent potential disasters, by utilizing the RBF-NNN to seamlessly integrate the dynamic elastic modulus (DEM) and modal parameters (such as natural frequency and mode shape) as damage indicators. To determine the dynamic characteristics of the arch dam, the JA sequentially optimizes an objective function rooted in vibration-based data sets. Two case studies of hyperbolic concrete arch dams were carefully designed using finite element simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the RBF-NN model, in conjunction with the Jaya algorithm. The testing results demonstrated that the proposed methods could exhibit significant computational time-savings, while effectively detecting damage in arch dam structures with complex nonlinearities. Furthermore, despite training data contaminated with a high level of noise, the RBF-NN and JA fusion remained the robustness, with high accuracy.
In this study, vibration tests are performed on cantilevered and clamped-clamped laminated composite rectangular plates using experimental modal analysis technique. The damages are simulated by applying progressive line cracks to the laminated composite plates for damage evaluations due to crack growth. The changes of frequency response functions(FRFs), MAC values, and modal parameters (frequency, mode shape and damping ratio) of the damaged composite plates, which are obtained by the modal testing of impact hammer, are investigated. Each experimental modal parameter of the progressively damaged composite plates is compared with natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained by finite element analysis. It is seen that the damage can be evaluated from the changes in the geometric properties and structural behaviors of the laminated composite plates resulting from the model updating process of the finite element model as a benchmark.

This study aims to investigate the seismic response of a large span thin shell structures and assess their displacement under seismic loads. The study employs finite element analysis to model a thin shell structure subjected to seismic excitation. The analysis includes eigenvalue analysis and time history analysis to evaluate the natural frequencies and displacement response of the structure under seismic loads. The findings show that the seismic response of the large span thin shell structure is highly dependent on the frequency content of the seismic excitation. The eigenvalue analysis reveals that the tenth mode of vibration of the structure corresponds to a large-span mode. The time history analysis further demonstrates, with 5% damping, that the displacement response of the structure at the critical node number 4920 increases with increasing seismic intensity, reaching a maximum displacement of 49.87mm at 3.615 seconds. Nevertheless, the maximum displacement is well below the allowable limit of the thin shell. The results of this study provide insight into the behaviour of complex large span thin shell structures as elevated foundations for buildings under seismic excitation, based on the displacement contours on different modes of eigenvalues. The findings suggest that the displacement response of the structure is significant for this new application of thin shell, and it is recommended to enhance the critical displacement area in the next design phase to align with the findings of this study to resist the seismic impact.
This paper explores the possibility of using a combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert transform (HT), termed the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method, to identify the modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modal frequencies. The principle of the HHT method and the procedure of using the HHT method for modal damping ratio identification are briefly introduced first. The dynamic response of a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) system under an impact load is then computed for a wide range of dynamic properties from well-separated modal frequencies to very closely spaced modal frequencies. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method are compared with the theoretical values and those identified using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The results show that the HHT method is superior to the FFT method in the identification of modal damping ratios of the structure with closely spaced modes of vibration. Finally, a 36-storey shear building with a 4-storey light appendage, having closely spaced modal frequencies and subjected to an ambient ground motion, is analyzed. The modal damping ratios identified by the HHT method in conjunction with the random decrement technique (RDT) are much better than those obtained by the FFT method. The HHT method performing in the frequency-time domain seems to be a promising tool for system identification of civil engineering structures.

Since soil-structure interactions are one of the most important subjects in the structural/foundation engineering, much study concerning the soil-structure interactions had been carried out. One of typical structures related to the soil-structure interactions is the strip foundation which is basically defined as the beam or strip rested on or supported by the soils. At the present time, lack of studies on dynamic problems related to the strip foundations is still found in the literature. From these viewpoint, this paper aims to theoretically investigate dynamics of the elliptic strip foundations and also to present the practical engineering data for the design purpose. Differential equations governing the free, out-of-plane vibrations of such sap foundations we derived, in which effects of the rotatory and torsional inertias and also shear deformation are included although the warping of the cross-section is excluded. Governing differential equations subjected to the boundary conditions of free-free end constraints are numerically solved for obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes by using the numerical integration technique and the numerical method of non-linear equation.
