Sequestration of Organic Pollutants in the Environments: Implications on Bioavailability and Bioremediation

  • For the last several decades, the fate of organic pollutants has been extensively studied in natural environments with emphasis on sorption and desorption phenomena. Although the mechanisms involved are not clear yet there is a consensus about the existence of hysteresis in the sorption and desorption of organic pollutants. Furthermore, it is found that hysteresis is the outcome of slow nonequilibrium sorption of organic pollutants, which results in the formation of desorption-resistant fractions of the pollutants. Desorption-resistant fractions may increase as a function of the residence time of the pollutants in the environments. Field monitoring data show a slow but continuous decline of chemicals applied to soil, followed by little or no subsequent disappearance. One plausible explanation for such resistance to biodegradation, desorption, or extraction can be attributed the gradual movement of organic pollutants to less accessible remote sites inside the matrix with time. This phenomenon has been termed sequestration or aging. The fact that some pollutants are sequestered in soil with time may have a great impact on bioremediation and risk assessment, Some portion of the resistant pollutants may still be present in the environments after bioremediation. It requires vigorous means to completely remove the aged portion that may not be further bioavailable. However, precaution should be taken since aging is not always evident. Aging seems to be soil and chemical specific.

High Vibration Phenomena due to Cylinder Explosion Pressure of Low-speed Diesel Engine with 7 Cylinders installed on Land (육상에 설치된 저속 7실린더 디젤엔진의 폭발 기진력 및 고진동 현상)

  • A 7K60MC-S low speed diesel engine in a power plant has frequently experienced high vibration since the unit completed construction works. Up to date, no fundamental vibration solutions were reached. Hence, several vibration tests and analyses were conducted to identify the root cause of this high vibration and to suggest the optimal countermeasures for diesel engine. The 9.25 Hz and 25.4 Hz vibrations have been observed on main body during operation. The magnitude of engine upper structural vibration is generally similar in horizontal transverse direction. However, differences in the 'Fore' and 'After' vibration magnitude with the same vibration phase angle at 9.25 Hz occur due to the explosion pulsations of 7 cylinders and the Inertia momentum added by the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) duct system. It was analyzed that the excess structural vibration occurred when the natural frequency of engine body is affected by the exciting sources due to the explosion pressure and the discharge pulsation of the seven cylinders in resonance range.

A Comparative Study on Shoes in the East and the West (동 .서양 신발의 비교 연구)

  • Shoes originated from the practical purposes : to protect feet from heat, cold. etc., and developed into various shapes. representing ornamentation and hierarchy. It was revealed that the aesthetic value was differently manifested from the practical one by different natural environments and socio-cultural Phenomena of the times in the East and the West. Comparing shoes in the East with those in the West, this study finds out the origin of shoes in the East and the West, and shapes and characteristics of shoes through the changes of times. Investigating various kinds of shoes in the East and the West, it also finds out the differences in status representations. Shoes are classified into the following styles : in the West. (i) sandal in which the instep was almost exposed, tied with strips and fixed with band, (ii) closed shoes covering the instep, (iii) boots that arose above the ankle: in the East, (i) shoes without shoe neck (리) boots with shoe neck (화) and wooden shoes (극). Status was also represented in shoes. In the West. the status difference was manifested mainly by jewelry or embroidery ornamentation. In particular, it was realized by the way they tied the shoes in Rome and by the length of the pointed front of the shoes in Romanesque and Gothic period. In the East, China, Korea and Japan, on the other hand, the use of shoes was regulated in detail by the official costume system, where material and color played an important role in marking the status.

  • The desires for safety of body and life can be said to be fundamental and natural in human beings. But the rapid industrialization and urbanization phenomena in our modern society is accelerating the treand for increasing diverse social pathology. Rise of serious crimes such as robbery and rape has already become an especially serious social problem and is at the point of threatening our welfare and social order. But the police, which is primarily responsible for the maintenance of welfare and social order of the public, is unable to respond actively to the increasing demand for policing due to the lack of available manpower and overwork. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to look for a plan to actively respond to the daily increasing outcry for law and order so that the public may maintain safe and happy lifestyles without the threat of crime. One concrete and practical strategy is to resolutely separate and transfer some of the many functions of the police that can be handled by citizen organizations to those groups so that the police can be relied upon to become functionally efficient. This will decrease the work of the police, thereby allowing the police to concentrate on its inherent responsibilities. As its primary example, 'transferring the function of security' of the police to the private security industry is suggested in this thesis.

  • Understanding the condition of our nation's water resources, identifying what caused problems, and determining how to solve these problems are essential but difficult undertakings. The natural water cycle is itself intricate, and the addition of human activities increased this complexity. Consequently, answering the basic question "How clean and safe is our water?" is not easy. One way to present the condition of our water resources and the impacts of related human activities is to develop understandable measures, or indicators, that singly or in combination provide information on water quality. Managers and scientists can then use this information to develop effective solutions and make sound decisions to protect our water resources. It is important to note that environmental indicators can be used to measure a variety of phenomena. Indicators can present information on status or trends in the state of the environment, can measure pressures or stressors that degrade environmental quality, and can evaluate society's responses aimed at improving environmental conditions.

  • BEA(Boundary Element Analysis) based on Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation is widely used in the prediction of sound radiation problems of vibrating structures. Accurate estimation of sound pressure distribution by BEA can be [possible if and only if dynamic behavior of the relating structure was described correctly. Another plausible method of sound radiation phenomena could be the NAH(Nearfield Acoustic Holography) method. NAH also based on the identical governing equation with BEA could be one of the best acoustic imaging schemes but it has disadvantages of the complexity of measurement and of the need of large amount of measuring points. In this paper, modal expansion method is presented for taking accurate dynamic data of the structures efficiently. This method makes use of vibration principle an arbitrary dynamic behavior of the structure is described by the summation of that structures mode shapes which can be calculated by FEA easily and accurately. Sound pressure field from a vibration flat plate is calculated using the combination of vibration signal on that flat plate from experiment, and of the natural mode shapes form FEA. When sound pressure field from vibration signal is calculated the importance of the phase information was emphasized.

  • Recently, many studies for the supported liquid membrane (SLM) using a carrier have been actively reported. Polymeric cation exchange membrane was synthsized by dissolving monensin carrier of antibiotic material in organic solvent. Then the SLM was applied to the Nernst-Planck and Fick equations and membrane potential and membrane permeability were measured respectively. The results showed the high selectivity towards alkali metal ions and the SLM showed linear relationship with low concentration. However, linear relationship did not appear at high concentration. This is explained by means of the new theory of the stagnant layer and the slop of logarithm value was linear for the up-hill transport phenomena of membrane transport.

  • Advanced SITs of the evolutionary PWRs have the advantage that they can passively control the ECC water discharge flow rate. Thus, the LPSI pumps can be eliminated from the safety injection system owing to the benefit of the advanced SITs. In the present study, a passive sealing plate was designed in order to overcome the shortcoming of the advanced SITs, i.e., the early nitrogen discharge through the stand pipe. The operating principle of the sealing plate depends only on the natural phenomena of buoyancy and gravity. The performance of the sealing plate was evaluated using the VAPER test facility, equipped with a full-scale SIT. It was verified that the passive sealing plate effectively prevented the air discharge during the entire duration of the ECC water discharge. Also, the major performance parameters of the advanced SIT were not changed with the installation of the sealing plate.

Text Mining and Network Analysis of News Articles for Deriving Socio-Economic Damage Types of Heat Wave Events in Korea: 2012~2016 Cases (뉴스 기사 텍스트 마이닝과 네트워크 분석을 통한 폭염의 사회·경제적 영향 유형 도출: 2012~2016년 사례)

  • In order to effectively prepare for damage caused by weather events, it is important to proactively identify the possible impacts of weather phenomena on the domestic society and economy. Text mining and Network analysis are used in this paper to build a database of damage types and levels caused by heat wave. We collect news articles about heat wave from the SBS news website and determine the primary and secondary effects of that through network analysis. In addition to that, based on the frequency with which each impact keyword is mentioned, we estimate how much influence each factor has. As a result, the types of impacts caused by heat wave are efficiently derived. Among these types of impacts, we find that people in South Korea are mainly interested in algae and heat-related illness. Since this technique of analysis can be applied not only to news articles but also to social media contents, such as Twitter and Facebook, it is expected to be used as a useful tool for building weather impact databases.

Effects of Condensation Heat Transfer Model in Calculation for KNGR Containment Pressure and Temperature Response

  • Under severe accidents, the pressure and temperature response has an important role for the integrity of a nuclear power plant containment. The history of the pressure and temperature is characterized by the amount and state of steam/air mixture in a containment. Recently, the heat transfer rate to the structure surface is supposed to be increased by the wavy interface formed on condensate film. However, in the calculation by using CONTAIN code, the condensation heat transfer on a containment wall is calculated by assuming the smooth interface and has a tendency to be underestimated for safety. In order to obtain the best- estimate heat transfer calculation, we investigated the condensation heat transfer model in CONTAIN 1.2 code and adopted the new forced convection correlation which is considering wavy interface. By using the film tracking model in CONTAIN 1.2 code, the condensate film is treated to consider the effect of wavy interface. And also, it was carried out to investigate the effect of the different cell modelings - 5-cell and 10-cell modeling - for KNGR(Korean Next Generation Reactor) containment phenomena during a severe accident. The effect of wavy interface on condensate film appears to cause the decrease of peak temperature and pressure response . In order to obtain more adequate results, the proper cell modeling was required to consider the proper flow of steam/air mixture.
