  • This paper presents vibration analyses of hard disk drive (HDD) spindle systems based on the finite element method. The systems under investigation have a cantilevered shaft rotating on hydrodynamic bearings. In particular, the influence of stator's flexibility on major modes has been taken into account in dual ways lumped and distributed-parameter model approfches. Even the latter employs relatively macroscopic elements instead of extremely fine ones Popular in commercial codes. In order to prove the effectiveness of such formulated models, two types of HDD prototypes featuring different hub and stator structures are selected as examples. Compared to the first, the second type has a reinforced stator that would raise the natural frequency of the hub's translational (or sideway) mode. Both free and forced vibration characteristics are computed, and subsequently compared with the experimental data. It is our conclusion that Particularly the Proposed distributed model method is an efficient design tool for state-of-the-art HDD spindle systems.

  • The instrumented Canton Tower is a 610 m high-rise structure, which has been considered as a benchmark problem for structural health monitoring (SHM) research. In this paper, an improved automatic modal identification method is presented based on a natural excitation technique in conjunction with the eigensystem realization algorithm (NExT/ERA). In the proposed modal identification method, damping ratio, consistent mode indicator from observability matrices (CMI_O) and modal amplitude coherence (MAC) are used as criteria to distinguish the physically true modes from spurious modes. Enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD), the data-driven stochastic subspace identification method (SSI-DATA) and the proposed method are respectively applied to extract the modal parameters of the Canton Tower under different environmental conditions. Results of modal parameter identification based on output-only measurements are presented and discussed. User-selected parameters used in those methods are suggested and discussed. Furthermore, the effect of environmental conditions on the dynamic characteristics of Canton tower is investigated.

  • With the advantages of large span, light deadweight and convenient construction, the steel-concrete composite beam (SCCB) has been rapidly developed as a medium span bridge. Compared with common beams, the global stiffness of SCCB is discontinuous and in a staged distribution. In this paper, the analysis model for the simply-supported SCCB is established and the vibration equations are derived. The natural vibration characteristics of a simply-supported SCCB are analyzed, and are compared with the theoretical and experimental results. A curvature mode measurement method is proposed to identify the shear connector damage of SCCB, with the stiffness reduction factor to describe the variation of shear connection stiffness. By analysis on the $1^{st}$ to $3^{rd}$ vertical modes, the distribution of shear connectors between the steel girder and the concrete slab are well identified, and the damage locations and failure degrees are detected. The results show that the curvature modes can be used for identification of the damage location.

  • In this paper, the dynamic responses of train-bridge system under one-way and two-way high-speed train passing are studied. The 3D finite element modeling is used and the bridge and train are modeled considering their details. The created model is validated by the results of the dynamic field test. To study the effect of train speed, different train passing scenarios are analyzed, including one-way passing, two-way passing in different directions at same speeds, and two-way passing in different directions at different speeds. The results show that the locations of maximum acceleration are different in one-way and two-way passing modes, and the maximum values in two-way passing mode are higher than those in one-way passing mode, while the maximum accelerations in both modes are almost identical. The displacement and acceleration values in different scenarios show peaks at speeds of 260 and 120 km/h, due to the proximity of the natural frequencies of the bridge and loading frequencies of the train at these speeds.

  • This study investigates effects of partially earth anchored cable system on the structural safety for a long-span cable-stayed bridge under dynamic loads such as seismic and wind load. For a three span cable-stayed bridge with a main span length of 810 m, two models are analyzed and compared; one is a bridge model with a self anchored cable system, the other is a bridge model with a partially earth anchored cable system. By performing multi-mode spectrum analysis for a prescribed seismic load and multi-mode buffeting analysis for a fluctuating wind component, the structural response of two models are compared. From results, the partially earth anchored cable system reduce the maximum pylon moment by 66% since earth anchored cables affect the natural frequencies of girder vertical modes and pylon longitudinal modes. In addition, the girder axial forces are decreased, specially the decrement of the axial force is large in seismic load, while girder moment is slightly increased. Thus, the partially earth anchored cable system is effective system not only on reduction of girder axial forces but also improvement of structural safety of a cable-stayed bridge under dynamic loads such as seismic and wind loads.

  • This paper presents a structural design review of a marine loading arm used for the fluid transfer of a liquid cargo from a ship or offshore plant. The marine loading arm is installed on a ship, offshore plant, or jetty in order to load or unload liquid cargo such as crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemical products, etc. The structural design of this marine loading arm is obliged to comply with the design and construction specifications regulated by the oil companies and international marine forum (OCIMF). In this paper, the structural safety of the initial design for the marine loading arm is evaluated for the design load conditions required by various operational modes. The evaluated results based on a finite element analysis (FEA) are reviewed in relation to the OCIMF specifications.

  • In this study CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of the steady fire-driven fuid flow for the performance test of ventilation at railway tunnel between Heuksok and Nodeul Station from Seoul Metro 9 is performed. There were fans with exhaust and intake modes and each was installed at the middle and both ends of the tunnel. For this test, the pool fire source of methyl alcohol with 1.5MW and smoke generators were installed between the middle of tunnel and Heuksok Station. In this test, the smoke behavior from natural convection was observed for 10 minutes from the ignition of pool fire and then fans with intake-modes at both sides of Heuksok effect of fan-on with intake mode located in the opposite side of the tunnel nearby Heuksok Station on fire-driven fluid flow is studied on when the boundary conditions of fan-on at the tunnel between Heuksok and Nodeul Station are the same as test. FLUENT, a commercial CFD code, is used for this analysis.

  • Multi-model vibration control of laminated composites plates for various fiver orientations has been carried out by making use of piezolectric materials(PZT) as sensors and actuators. Cantilever plate is used as a specimen to test multi-modal vibration supression under random exitation. Impulse technique is applied to determine the natural frequency, the damping ratio(.zeta.) and the modal damping(2.zeta..omega.) of the first bending and the trosion modes. Two independent controllers are implemented to control the two modes simultaneously and established digitally on the basis of the direct negative velocity feedback control with collocated sensor/actuator. Experimental results for various fiber orientations and feedback gains are compared with finite element analysis considering stiffnesses and dampings of piezoeletiric sensors, actuators and bonding layer.

  • The objective of this paper is setting out, for a cable-stayed bridge with a curtain suspension, a method to determine the modes of vibration of the structure. The system of differential equations governing the vibrations of the bridge, derived by means of a variational formulation in a nonlinear field, is reported in Appendix C. The whole analysis results from the application of Hamilton's principle, using the expressions of potential and kinetic energies and of the virtual work made by viscous damping forces of the various parts of the bridge (Monaco and Fiore 2003). This paper focuses on the equation concerning the transversal motion of the girder of the cable-stayed bridge and in particular on its final form obtained, restrictedly to the linear case, neglecting some quantities affecting the solution in a non-remarkable way. In the hypotheses of normal mode of vibration and of steady-state, we propose the resolution of this equation by a particular method based on a numerical approach. Respecting the boundary conditions, we derive, for each mode of vibration, the corresponding frequency, both natural and damped, the shape-function of the girder axis and the exponential function governing the variability of motion amplitude in time. Finally the results so obtained are compared with those deriving from the dynamic analysis performed by a finite elements calculation program.
