  • Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.

  • The purplish red pigment from the roots of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, a Korean edible wild plant, has been investigated concerning it's value as a natural colorant for Korean traditional foods. An attempt was made to isolate pigments and define their characteristics. Two compounds of isobutylshikonin and acetylshikonin were identified by melting point determination and spectra of UV, IR, and $^{1}H-NMR$. To examine the utility of these naphthoquinone pigments for foods, the effect of various pH values on stability were determined over a period of storage. Buffered solutions of acetylshikonin and isobutylshikonin at pH 3 and 5 showed stable purplish red. The absorption maxima if acetylshikonin and isobutylshikonin over the range of pH 3 to 7 were 518 nm and 520 nm, respectively. A bathochromic shift to 588 nm at pH 10 was observed on these two naphthoquinone pigments. Sensory evaluation was performed with acetylshikonin and isobutylshikonin of identical absorbance. These two pigments revealed purplish red color in Munsell system.

  • Heat transfer phenomena and temperature characteristics in heat storage and release process in the heat storage system using PCM(Phase Change material) were studied experimentally. The melting points of Octacosane paraffin($C_{28}H_{58}$) and sodium pyrophosphate decahydrate ($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$) used for phase change materials are $62^{\circ}C$ and $79^{\circ}C$ respectively. Experiments were performed in order to investigate temperature distributions, the heat storage quantity and the release quantity on octacosane paraffin and sodium pyrophosphate decahydrate for heat storage and release in the heat storage system. Furthermore the comparison of these characteristics between paraffin and $Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$ were evaluated. In case of the paraffin, temperature slowly increased at early heat storage process by natural convection, while temperature of $Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$ rapidly increased the dominant role played by conduction at early heat storage processing Also, during the heat storage and release process in case of the paraffin, it was observed that the variation of temperature of the neighborhood of wall and center in the top and bottom of the tube exhibited a great difference, however in $Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$, it was observed that the variation of temperature exhibited a little difference. And heat storage quantity of each PCM of identity mass in heat storage process was shown that $Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$ exhibited more by 16 percents than paraffin.

  • Glass was fabricated by using refused coal ore obtained from Dogye coal mine in Samchuk. We additionally used soda ash and calcium carbonate as raw materials to make a glass with the chemical composition of soda-lime glass. And the properties of glass were measured when limestone was used as natural raw materials instead of calcium carbonate as chemical raw materials. Transparent glass was fabricated by melting raw materials at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in an electrical furnace. The various kinds of glass samples were fabricated according to the kinds of refused coal ore and glass cullet. The optical properties of transmittance and color chromaticity were measured by UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer and the thermal properties of thermal expansion coefficient and softening point were measured. Transparent glass with the transmittance of over 70% in visible range was fabricated by using normal refused coal ore and black colored glass with the transmittance of 0~35% was fabricated by using shel1 type refused coal ore. Therefore, it is concluded that refused coal ore can be used for raw materials to manufacture secondary glass products such as a glass tile and foamed glass panel for construction material.

  • This study is aimed to provide basic data to set the direction of polar literacy education and to raise awareness of the importance of polar research. Elementary, middle, and high school students' perception of the polar region was examined in terms of current status of polar information, impression regarding polar regions, and awareness of related issues. The study included 975 students from nine elementary, middle, and high schools, who responded to 16 questions, including close-ended and open-ended items. The results suggest that students had more experiences regarding the polar region on audiovisual media, but relatively limited learning experiences in school education. The impression they had of the polar region was confined to the monotonous image of a polar bear in crisis, following the melting of the glacier due to global warming. The students formed powerful images by combining scenes they saw in audiovisual media with emotions. In terms of recognizing problems in the polar region, the students were generally interested in creatures, natural environment, and climate change, but their interests varied depending on their school level and their own career path. The students highly valued the scientist's status as agents to address the problems facing the region, and gave priority to global citizenship values rather than practical standards. Based on the results, we suggest the following: introducing and systematizing content focusing on the polar region in the school curriculum, providing a differentiated learning experience through cooperation between scientists and educators, establishing polar literacy based on concepts that are relevant to various subjects, earth system-centered learning approach, setting the direction for follow-up studies and the need for science education that incorporates diverse values.

  • An optimized design of the transportation insulated box must be considered to control the thermal damage in order to maintain the fresh condition for temperature-sensitive medicine and frozen food safety. The inside temperature of the insulated box is a natural convection enclosure state, thermal stratification naturally occurs as time passes in case of with outside heat load. The latent heat material (LHM) placement inside the box maintains the target temperature of the product for temperature fluctuations during transport, and LHM application is a common and efficient method. In this work, inside temperature stratification in an insulated box depending on the LHM pack position is numerically simulated and experimented. The insulated box is made up of vacuum insulation panel (VIP), and LHM modules are placed over six faces inside the box, with the same weight. The temperature curves for 72 hrs as experiment results clearly show the temperature stratification in the upper, middle, and lower at the LHM melting time region. However, the temperature stratification state is uniformly changed in accordance with the condition of the upper and lower placement weight of the LHM pack. And also, the temperature uniformity by changed placement weight of LHM has an effect on maintaining time for target air temperature inside the box. These results provide information on the optimized design of the insulated box with LHM.

  • A study was performed to investigate the isobaric effects of impurities in isotope measurement of gadolinium by TIMS. Especially, the ratio of $^{155}Gd/^{158}Gd$ showed the higher value than that of natural gadolinium and also decreased as the measuring time increased. This phenomenon is considered to be due to the oxide form of La ($LaO^+$, m/z=155) causing to create a serious bias on the measurement of $^{155}Gd$ abundance by La as an impurity, and due to $LaO^+$ produced more than the $Gd^+$ in the early time which disappears as the time goes on because of lower melting point and ionization potential of La than Gd. Although isobaric effects from Ba($BaO^+$), Ce($CeO^+$), Sm($SmO^+$), La($LaO^+$), and $K_4{^+}$(m/z=156)-cluster were detected even when blank rhenium filaments were used, these could be avoided by preconditioning(baking out) the filament. And we found that the measurement of $GdO^+$ instead of $Gd^+$ is more suitable in avoiding the isobaric effect from impurities such as La, Ce and Ba in the measurement of Gd isotope only in case of absence or extremely low level of Yb, Sm, Dy, Er, Lu.

  • The Gogunsan Archipelago is composed of two island groups; the first group includes Mal-do, Myeong-do, Gwangdae-do, and Bangchuk-do islands consisting of Neoproterozoic rocks, and the second group includes Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do, and Seonyu-do islands consisting of Cretaceous rocks. The first group mainly consists of the Bangchuk formation which can be divided into two layers; the lower layer was more deformed than the upper layer. The former was intruded by mafic and felsic volcanic rocks formed in the volcanic arc tectonic setting 930-890 Ma and the latter was deposited ca. 825-800 Ma. In these islands, large scale folds with east-west fold axes were beautifully formed; the Maldo island fold was designated as natural monument and large scale beautiful chevron fold was developed on the Gwangdae-do island. In addition, there are unique zebra-shaped outcrop formed by a mixing of basic and acidic magma and Independent Gate shaped outcrop formed by coastal erosion. On the other hand, the Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do and Seonyu-do islands consist of 92-91Ma Cretaceous volcanic rocks and, in Sinsi-do island, the Nanshan formation deposited ca. 92 Ma. These Cretaceous volcanic rocks formed by melting of the continental crust by the heat supplied from the uplifting mantle due to the extension caused by a retreat of subducting ocean slab. Yami-do and Sinsi-do islands are composed of rhyolite. In Yami-do island, bands with vertical joint formed by cooling of the bottom part of the lava, are shown. In Sinsi-do island, large-scale vertical joints formed by cooling of lava flow, were developed. The Jangja-bong of Jangja-do island and Mangju-bong of Seonyu-do island are composed of brecciated rhyolite and formed a ring shaped archipelago contributing to the development of marine culture by providing natural harbor condition. They also provide beautiful views including 'Seonyu 8 views' along with other islands. As mentioned above, the Gogunsan archipelago is rich in geoheritages and associated cultural and historical resources, making it worth as a National Geopark.

  • We study metamorphism of metasedimetary rocks and origin and evolution of leucogranite form Samcheok area, northeastern Yeongnam massif, South Korea. Metamorphic rocks in this area are composed of metasedimentary migmatite, biotite granitic gneiss and leucogranite. Metasedimentary rocks, which refer to major element feature of siliclastic sediment, are divided into two metamorphic zones based on mineral assemblages, garnet and sillimanite zones. According to petrogenetic grid of mineral assemblages, metamorhpic P-T conditions are $740{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ at $4.8{\sim}5.8\;kbar$ in the garnet zone and $640-760^{\circ}C$ at 2.5-4.5kbar in sillimanite zone. The leucogranite (Imwon leucogranite) is peraluminous granite which has high alumina index (A/CNK=1.31-1.93) and positive discriminant factor value (DF > 0). Thus, leucogranite is S-type granite generated from metasedimentary rocks. Major and trace element diagram ($R_1-R_2$ diagram and Rb vs. Y+Nb etc.) show collisional environment such as syn-collisional or volcanic arc granite. Because Rb/sr ratio (1.8-22.9) of leucogranites is higher than Sr/Ba ratio (0.21-0.79), leucogranite would be derived from muscovite dehydrate melting in metasedimentary rocks. Leucogranites have lower concentration of LREE and Eu and similar that of HREE relative to metasedimentary rocks. To examine difference of REEs between leucogranites and metasedimentary rocks, we perform modeling using volume percentage of a leucogranite and a metasedimenatry rock from study area and REE data of minerals from rhyolite (Nash and Crecraft, 1985) and melanosome of migmatite (Bea et al., 1994). Resultants of modeling indicate that LREE and HREE are controlled by monazites and garnet, respectively, although zircon is estimated HREE dominant in some leucogranite without garnet. Because there are many inclusions of accessary phases such as monazite and zircon in biotites from metasedimentary rocks. leucogranitic magma was mainly derived from muscovite-breakdown in metasedimenary rocks. Leucogranites can be subdivided into two types in compliance with Eu anomaly of chondrite nomalized REE pattern; the one of negative Eu anomaly is type I and the other is type II. Leucogranites have lower Eu concetnrations than that of metasedimenary rocks and similar that of both type. REE modeling suggest that this difference of Eu value is due to that of components of feldspars in both leucogranite and metasedimentary rock. The tendency of major ($K_2O$ and $Na_2O$) and face elements (Eu, Rb, Sr and Ba) of leucogranites also indicate that source magma of these two types was developed by anatexis experienced strong fractionation of alkali-feldspar. Conclusionally, leucogranites in this area are products of melts which was generated by muscovite-breakdown of metasedimenary rock in environment of continetal collision during high temperature/pressure metamorphism and then was fractionated and crystallized after extraction from source rock.

  • Investigation into iron manufacture relics has been active since 1970s, especially accelerated in 1990s across the country. Consideration of the importance of production site relics has lately attracted attention to iron manufacture relics. Methodological studies of the investigation into iron manufacture relics, however, were less made compared with those of the investigation into tomb, dwelling, or swampy place relics. It is because the process of iron manufacture is too complicated to understand and also requires professional knowledge of metal engineering. With the recognition of these problems this research is to form an opinion about how to excavate, to rearrange and classify, and to examine iron manufacture relics, based upon the understanding of the nature of iron, iron production process, and metal engineering features of related relics like slag, iron lumps and so on. This research classifies iron manufacture relics into seven types according to the production process; mining, smelting, refining, tempering, melting, steelmaking, and the others. Then it arranges methods to survey in each stage of field study, trial digging, and excavation. It also explains how to classify and examine excavated relics, what field of natural science to be used to know the features of relics, and what efforts have been made to reconstruct a furnace and what their problems were, making the best use of examples, drawings, and photos. It comes to the conclusion, in spite of the lack of in-depth discussion on application and development of various investigation methods, that iron manufacture relics can be classified according to the production process, that natural sciences should be applied to get comprehensive understanding of relics as well as archeological knowledge, and that efforts to reconstruct a furnace should be continued from the aspect of experimental archeology.
