  • As part of study on thermal hydraulic behavior in the reactor cavity under external vessel cooling in the APR (Advanced Power Reactor) 1400, one dimensional two phase flow of steady state in the reactor cavity have been analyzed to investigate a coolant circulation mass flow rate in the annulus region between the reactor vessel and the insulation material using the RELAP5/MOD3 computer code. The RELAP5/MOD3 results have shown that a two phase natural circulation flow of 300 - 600 kg/s is generated in the annulus region between the reactor vessel and the insulation material when the external vessel cooling has been applied in the APR 1400. An increase in the heat flux of the inner vessel leads to an increase of the coolant mass flow rate. An increase in the coolant outlet area leads to an increase in the coolant circulation mass flow rate, but the coolant inlet area does not effective on the coolant circulation mass flow rate. The change of the lower coolant outlet to a lower position affects the coolant circulation mass flow rate, but the variation trend is not consistent.

  • The liquid cooling effect of a natural convection type radiator by using the PCM has been investigated experimentally. The radiator size is $423{\times}295{\times}83$ mm and PCM container size is $398{\times}270{\times}26$ mm. The objective is elapsed time higher than maximum time to reach for maximum operating temperature of a general liquid cooling radiator. This study, in order to study on the effects of the phase-change phenomenon, carried out the various mass flow rate, input electric power, ambient and melting point of three type PCM. For the above experimental parameter, the melting time was performed about 180/250/560 min at input power 150 W and ambient $30^{\circ}C$ from using the three type PCM(PCM_S1/S2/S3) respectively. Furthermore, the effects of the thermal dissipation was decreased higher input power than lower input power at heating block and melting time of PCM. However, the effects of mass flow rate did not nearly affect of the thermal performance especially.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of radial heat sink used for high power LED lightings by natural convection cooling with surrounding air. Experimental and numerical analyses are carried out together. Parametric studies are performed to compare the effects of geometric parameters in radial heat sink such as the number of fins, fin height, fin length, and thickness of fin base as well as the surface coatings of radial heat sink. In this study, the cooling of 60 W LED lamp is examined with radiative heat transfer considered as well as natural convection. Numerical results show the optimum condition when the number of fin is 40, heat sink height is 120 mm, fin length is 15 mm, and fin base thickness is 3 mm. The difference in temperature of the LED metal PCB is within $1^{\circ}C$ between numerical analyses and experimental results. Also, the CNT coating on the heat sink surface is found to increase the cooling performance significantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the natural ventilation performance for variable external wind speed as a preliminary step to determining the seasonal operating modes of the Double-skin Facade System applied to apartment buildings. For this purpose, two simulation programs are used to compare the Double-Skin Facade System with the Double Sash Window. First, TAS is used to plan a schedule for natural ventilation during the intermediate season and to analyze the cooling loads. Second, CFD is used for a more detailed airflow analysis on a typical floor plan of the model building. The results of the simulations on natural ventilation performance show that the Double-Skin Facade System can reduce the cooling load by 10.5% compared to the Double Sash Window.

  • When a molten corium is relocated in a lower head of a reactor vessel, the ERVC (External Reactor Vessel Cooling) system is actuated as coolant is supplied into a reactor cavity to remove a decay heat from the molten corium during a severe accident. To achieve this severe accident mitigation strategy, the two-phase natural circulation flow in the annular gap between the external reactor vessel and the insulation should be formed sufficiently by designing the coolant inlet/outlet area and gap size adequately on the insulation device. For this reason, one-dimensional natural circulation flow tests and the simple analysis were conducted to estimate the natural circulation flow under the ERVC condition of APR1400. The experimental facility is one-dimensional and scaled down as the half height and 1/238 channel area of the APR1400 reactor vessel. The calculated circulation flow rate was similar to experimental ones within about ${\pm}$15% error bounds and depended on the form loss due to the inlet/outlet area.

  • A CFA(Cooling Fan Assembly) is composed of a fan, motor and shroud, which is at the back of the automotive radiator. By forcing the wind to pass, the CFA controls the cooling performance of the radiator. The noise and vibration of the CFA may be primarily due to the resonance between the CFA and engine. The Interference among the fan, shroud and radiator by deformation is considered when the CFA is designed. In this paper, in order to analyze the structural vibration of the CFA for automobiles, a finite element model of the CFA is established by using a commercial FEM code. After the finite element modeling, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes are obtained from the FE analysis. The natural frequencies are obtained from the vibration test as well. Then, the results of the vibration test are compared with those of the FE analysis. The natural frequencies obtained by experiment have a great similarity to the results from FE model. We have confirmed the validity of the FE model and verify the structural safety for the resonance. The stress and displacements are obtained from FE analysis. We have confirmed the safety for the interference and failure.

  • The present study is to assess the applicability of the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, MARS 1.4, for the analysis of thermal-hydraulic behavior in PWRs during natural circulation conditions. The code simulates a natural circulation test, BETHSY test 4. la, which was conducted on the integral test facility of BETHSY. The test represented the cooling states of the primary cooling system under single-phase natural circulation, two-phase natural circulation and the reflux condensation mode with conditions corresponding to the residual power, 2% of the rated core power value and 6.8 MPa at the secondary system. Based on MARS 1.4 calculations, the major thermal-hydraulic behaviors during natural circulation are evaluated and the differences between the experimental data and calculated results are identified. The calculated results show generally good behavior with regard to the experimental results; the region of single-phase natural circulation is 100-92% of the initial mass inventory, two-phase natural circulation is 84-63 %, and the reflux condensation mode occurred below 58 %. U-tubes empty and the core uncovery are obtained at 39 % and 34 % of the initial mass inventory, respectively.

  • The majority of ι-menthol is still obtained by freezing the oil of Mentha arvensis to crystallize the menthol present. This 'natural' menthol is then physically seperated by centrifuging the supernatant liquid away from the menthol crystal. But the price of natural ι-menthol has fluctuated widely so effort has been devoted to the production of ι-menthol by synthetic more readily available raw materials. In the 1970's, many researcher synthesised a new compounds with the menthol cooling effect. During this period many molecular structure designed and synthesised on concepts of correlation between structure and biological activity and the various types of molecule which give rise to cooling effect more than ι-menthol. Specially, N-alkyl-carboxamide group is substituted for the hydroxyl group in ι-menthol. Recently, the most active compounds synthesised is 4-methyl-3-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-2-[5H]-furanone. This compound is 35 times more powerful in the mouth and 512 times more powerful on the skin than ι-menthol. The cooling effect also lasts twice as long. While not yet commercially available, it is expected that these types of materials will be subjected to toxicological studies and will soon be sell on the market.

  • A long term passive cooling system is considered as the most important safety feature for the nuclear design after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011. The conventional active pump driven safety systems are not available during a station Black Out (SBO) accident. The current design requirement on cooling time of the Passive Auxiliarly Feedwater System (PAFS) is about 8 hours only. To meet the 72 hours cooling time, the pool capacity of cooling water tank should be increased as much as 3~4 times larger than that of current water cooling tank. In order to extend the cooling time for 72 hours, a new passive air-water combined cooling system is proposed. This paper provides the feasibility of the combined passive air-water cooling system. The current pool capacity of water cooling system is preserved, and the cooling capability is extended by an additional air cooler.
