  • Despite it has been mentioned that the successful restoration in landscape level was achieved in the Young-il soil erosion control project, quantitative evaluation of restored plant communities (Alnus firma as introduced species and Pinus thunbergii as native species) was hardly founded. Light availability, litter and woody debris cover, and forest structure and composition were determined for 500 m2 band-quadrat in three forest types. Abiotic factors of Q. serrata stands, as reference forest, and A. firma stands were similar but not for P. thunbergii stands. There were no significant difference on mean stem density (stems ha-1, H = 3.6, p = 0.162), and the mean basal area of each stand had marginal significance (m2 ha-1, H = 5.7, p = 0.058) among stands as total basal area was higher with the order of A. firma (21.4 m2 ha-1), P. thunbergii (19.8 m2 ha-1) and Q. serrata (16.2 m2 ha-1). Restoration of vegetation structure was more effective in fast-growing and N-fixing A. firma, as introduced species plantation. However, result of MRPP, NMS ordination and ISPAN for herbaceous layer, not for tree and shrub species composition, indicated that restoration of ground vegetation was likely influenced highly from local environment. Propagule availability from landscape context such as connectedness to natural vegetation and management practices in restored isolated stands are available explanations for restoration effects and gaps between restored plantations and secondary oak forest.

  • The fish fauna and community structure at 20 stations in streams of the Mt. Biseul were investigated from June 2003 to May 2004. During the study period, 29 species, 25 genera belonging to 9 families were collected. Cyprinid fish occupied 48.3% (14 species) and cobitid fish had 13.8% (4 species). Six species (22.2%) were korean endemic and two species of Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus were exotic. It was found that the population density of carnivorous fish (Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis) increased in the lower-reach of small streams in the Mt. Biseul area since it had been introduced from the other native rivers in the middle 1990s. As the result of analyzing fish community in the surveyed area, the species diversity ranged from 0.553 to 1.023. The findings showed that the Geumpo, Chacheon and Hyeonpung streams had higher species diversity indicies of 0.936 ${\sim}$ 1.023 than the Sincheon and Gisegok streams with 0.553 ${\sim}$ 0.727.

  • Many recent studies have focused on maintaining a healthy life by preventing and/or postponing the aging process. Numerous studies have reported that continuous exposure to reactive oxygen species can stimulate skin aging and that excessive accumulation of fat can cause an impaired skin barrier and tissue structure alterations. Thus, the maintenance of antioxidant homeostasis and the suppression of adipose accumulation are important strategies for skin anti-aging. Here, we prepared three types of extracts [whole juice, acetone-perchloric acid (PCA), and ethanol] from 20 fruits and medicinal herbs native to the Gyeongnam area of Korea. The total phenolic content of each extract was analyzed, and we observed higher total phenolic contents in the medicinal herbs. Consistent with this, the results of the oxygen radical absorbance activity capacity assay indicated that the in vitro antioxidant activities of the medicinal herb extracts were stronger than those of the fruit extracts. The fruits and medicinal herbs had strong effects on cell-based systems, including $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress in human keratinocytes and 3T3-L1 lipid accumulation. Nishimura Wase persimmon, Taishu persimmon, wrinkled giant hyssop, sweet wormwood, Chinese cedar, red perilla, tan shen, hiyodori-jogo, and cramp bark may be natural anti-aging materials with effective antioxidant and anti-adipogenic activities. Taken together, our findings may provide scientific evidence supporting the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals from fruits and medicinal herbs.

  • The rhizobacterial diversity associated with 9 native plant species inhabiting coastal sand dunes in Tae-an area, Chungnam Province, was studied using the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting analysis over three times from October 2003 to March 2004. One dominant band commonly occurred in all of the rhizosphere samples, which was identified as that of Lysobacter enzymogenes. The other common bands included those derived from species of Pseudomonas and Bacillus. It was notable that L. enzymogenes was dominant in all of the 9 plant species and such dominance was consistent throughout the whole sampling period, which confirms the previous study by Lee et al. (2006a). The Bacillus bands were detected in all of the three samplings, and those of Pseudomonas were notable in the samples of December 2003. By the DGGE analysis alone, the significance of Lysobacter to the sand dune plants is not clear. However, considering their presence in healthy plants and the dominance in all plant species, Lysobacter may have positive roles in the survival or growth of the plants in sand dune area.

  • This study was designed to investigate the process of re- or neo-vascularization in the prefabricated cutaneous flap using a skeletonized arteriovenous pedicle implantation. Fourty-eight flaps were divided into six groups of eight flaps, including control group of the conventional epigastric flap. In experimental groups, skin flap was fabricated by subcutaneous implantation of a distally ligated saphenous arteriovenous pedicle in left abdomen. At 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks after, prefabricated flap was elevated as an island flap based on implanted pedicle and sutured back in place. Three days after flap repositioning, the area of flap viability was quantified, the pattern of flap vascularization was evaluated with microangiography, and the quantification of vessels was assessed histologically. There were statistically significant differences in flap viability between group 2, 3, 4, and the control (p<0.05), with increased survival area in order. But Group 5 and 6 showed higher flap viability as much as the control did. In the microangiographis study, numerous small meander vessels were newly developed in the vicinity of the implanted pedicle just only 2 weeks after pedicle implantation, but neovascularization around the tip of implanted pedicle, and its anastomosis with native vasculatures was more important for overall flap survival, which was usually developed at least 4 weeks after pedicle implantation. Histologically, vessels are evenly spread over all layers of the flap at 6 weeks after pedicle implantation. The quantification of vessels was correlated well with the improvement of flap viability (p<0.05). In conclusion, neo- and re-vascularization around the tip of implanted pedicle was an important factor for overall survival of the prefabricated flap. Therefore, skeletonized pure vascular pedicle transfer, even though it used alone without surrounding was sufficient to get higher flap viability. The optimal duration of pedicle implantation was8 weeks to obtain maximal survival.

  • The importance of the green space in urban area has been increasing. There are the increasing needs of creation and sustainable management of urban forest. In order to satisfy the need, it is necessary to set indicators for sustainable urban forest. With this regard, this study is to derive the indicators for evaluation of the urban forest through literature reviews, experts opinion, and field survey. The results of the study, the indicators consist of the ecological healthiness, socio-cultural function, and scenic beauty. The ecological healthiness includes stability and naturality (e.g. area, native species, connectivity etc.). The socio-cultural function contain improvement of living environment, stable emotion, community, and environmental education. The scenic beauty includes environmental-friendly facilities, maintenance of urban forest. The indicators have high feasibility to create and manage the urban forest through evaluating urban forest in practical. This indicators are useful to guide to develop urban forest and park.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of different compressive forces on deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) particles covered by native bilayer collagen membrane (NBCM) during alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in the molar area, and to identify any histomorphometric and clinical differences according to the compressive force applied. Methods: Sockets were filled with DBBM after tooth extraction, and different compressive forces (30 N and 5 N, respectively) were applied to the graft material in the test (30 N) and control (5 N) groups. The DBBM in both groups was covered with NBCM in a double-layered fashion. A crossed horizontal mattress suture (hidden X) was then made. A core biopsy was performed using a trephine bur without flap elevation at the implant placement site for histomorphometric evaluations after 4 months. The change of the marginal bone level was measured using radiography. Results: Twelve patients completed the study. The histomorphometric analysis demonstrated that the mean ratios of the areas of new bone, residual graft material, and soft tissue and the implant stability quotient did not differ significantly between the groups (P>0.05). However, the mean size of the residual graft material showed a significant intergroup difference (P<0.05). Conclusions: The application of 2 compressive forces (5 N, 30 N) on particulate DBBM grafts during open-healing ARP in the posterior area led to comparable new bone formation, implant feasibility and peri-implant bone level.

  • This study investigated the occurrence of honeybee diseases in Incheon area, at the point of great widespread of sacbrood disease in the country. Sixteen resident beekeeping apiaries; 3 native honeybee and 13 European honeybee apiaries were selected for this research. Over 20 adult bees were evenly collected from the most colonies of each apiary three times (March, June, November) within a year. In this work, 13 honeybee diseases including 7 viral diseases, 2 bacterial diseases, 2 fungal diseases, and 2 parasitic diseases were detected by preliminary inspections and PCR. As a result, viral infections were confirmed at 34 among 48 apiaries (70.8%) over the entire examination period. Parasitic diseases showed the highest detection rate of 45.8%, which are detected in 44 among 96 cases. In the seasonal prevalence, 30 cases (15.6%) of 7 pathogens were detected from 14 apiaries in March, 50 cases (24.0%) of 9 pathogens and 56 cases (26.9%) of 9 pathogens were detected from all apiaries in June and November, respectively. Nosema was shown to be the most prevalent pathogen from March to November, followed by sacbrood virus (SBV) and stonebrood. The spread of SBV infection in Incheon would be under-estimated by the increasing of detection rate over the time. Especially, Chinese sacbrood virus was detected from 4 European honybee apiaries, but clinical symptoms were not found. No chalkbrood, acute bee paralysis virus, and chronic bee paralysis virus were detected in this study. The effective therapy and preventive measures should be prepared for beekeeping industry.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate marginal bone loss of the alveolar crest on implants with or without guided bone regeneration and variables that have influenced. Methods: The clinical evaluation were performed for survival rate and marginal bone loss of 161 endosseous implants installed with guided bone regeneration (GBR) in 83 patients from September 2009 to October 2010 in relation to sex and age of patients, position of implant, implant system, length and diameter of implant. Study group (n=42) implant with GBR procedure, control group (n=41) implant without GBR technique. Simultaneous GBR approach using resorbable membranes combined with autogenous bone graft or freeze-dried bone allograft or combination. Radiographic examinations were conducted at healing abutment connection and latest visit. Marginal bone level was measured. Results: Mean marginal bone loss was 0.73 mm in study group, 0.63 mm in control group. Implants in maxillary anterior area (1.21 mm) were statistically significant in study group (P<0.05), maxillary posterior area (0.81 mm) in control group (P<0.05). Mean marginal bone loss 1.47 mm for implants with diameter 3.4 mm, 0.83 mm for implants of control group with diameter 4.0 mm (P<0.05). Some graft materials showed an increased marginal bone loss but no statistically significant influence of sex, implant type or length. Conclusion: According to these findings, this study demonstrated the amount of marginal bone loss around implant has maintained a relative stable during follow-up periods. We conclude that implants with GBR had similar survival rate and crestal bone level compared with implants in native bone.

  • The content of taxol and related compounds in various tissues of native yews( T. cuspidata var. latifolia) grown in 5 locations of Ullung Island were analyzed. A considerable range of vanation in the content was observed in the needle and bark collected from different trees located at the same area as well as at five different areas. Taxol content was much higher in the needle(0.017% on the dry weight basis) than those in the bark, whereas the content of 10-deacetyl baccatin III(10-DAB III) was slightly higher in the bark(0.073%), regardless of the location of the trees collected. Particuayly, the needle collected from the Hyunpo area, which located in North-west part of Ullung Island, contained the highest level of taxol(0.024%) exceeding the reported level in dried barks of Pacific yew and also somewhat higher level of its Precusor, 10-DAB III(0.049%). These results suggested that the needle of the yew at the Ullung Island could be suitable materials as a renewable source for the mass production of taxol.
