This study aimed to introduce what Korea national oral health surveys are and examine recent oral health status in Korean children. Korea Government has implemented national oral health-related surveys during the past two decades. The surveys with oral health examination are Korean Children's National Oral Health Survey (KCNOHS) since 2000 in 5-year-old and 12-year-old children and Korea National Hhealth and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) since 2007 aged 1 year and more. KCNOHS provides the information about the distribution of prevalence of dental caries, gingival health, behavioral factors, and dental clinic demands etc. KNHANES has huge amount of health data for representative Korean population including oral health and general conditions. Based on KCNOHS, the prevalence of dental caries and its experience has decreased steadily, and the status of oral hygiene and preventive treatment called sealents has been also improved after the year of 2000. However, there is still a gap to reach to those of Western developed countries. Therefore, more effective oral health policy plans and strategies for Korean children and adolescents are needed to prevent and manage for dental caries in private and clinical field of dentistry with public sector.
Objectives: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a national surveillance system that has been assessing the health and nutritional status of Koreans since 1998. Based on the National Health Promotion Act, the surveys have been conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). Methods: An oral examination as part of The National Health and Nutrition Examination was proposed to calculate the sample design and survey participation. The surveying system was presented by classifying the measurement environment, screening, and survey items by year, and the merits and limitations of using the data were suggested by examining the status of survey quality management and the process of disclosing raw data. Results: This nationally representative cross-sectional survey samples approximately 10,000 individuals each year and collects information on oral examinations and oral health interviews. Data for the oral health component of KNHANES was obtained to assess the oral health status of Koreans and determine the prevalence of dental caries and periodontitis. The oral health data quality control of KNHANES was composed of three parts: "Education Program" and "Field Training Program" for quality control of oral health examiners (dentists) by the professional academy, and "Data management" by the KCDC. After completion of the three-step data check, the indicators of dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral health behavior were published in the National Health Statistics. Conclusions: To achieve the goals of oral health indicators, we will continue to monitor so that we can use it as basic data for oral policies and carry out various linkage analyses related to oral diseases.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relations between oral health status and subjective oral health recognition in Korean adolescents. Methods: The survey data were extracted from the 2012 Korea National Oral Health Survey from June to November, 2012. The survey consisted of oral checkup data and the oral health interviewing data of 9,981 adolescents(5,335 male, 4,646 female) by proportional distribution. The questionnaire included general objective oral health status and subjective oral health recognition. The subjective oral health recognition consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, oral health status, oral health behavior, and subjective oral health recognition. Results: According to multiple regression analysis for the relations between general characteristics and subjective oral health recognition, subjective health recognition, the influencing factors were gender, age, the number of tooth brushing per day, intake of snacks and carbonated drinks, regular oral examination, decayed teeth (DT), missing teeth (MT,) and DMFT. Conclusions: The routine oral checkup is the most important method to improve the oral health management in the adolescents. The continuing oral health improvement project must be implemented based on the law and will keep the adolescents in good oral health status.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of subjective recognition for oral health in HBsAg positive carriers based on the data of the $5^{th}$ National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods : A statistical package SPSS 21.0 was used to analyze the relationship between oral health status and subjective oral health awareness based on data of the $5^{th}$ National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results : The subjective poor oral health was found in those who had mastication and speaking discomfort and those having dental prosthesis. Conclusions : The respondents considered themselves to be in poor oral health when the subjective systemic health status and objective oral health status were worse.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between health factor, oral health factor and revalence of depression in Korea elderly by data from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2012. Methods: The subjects were 10,938 elderly over 65 years old by rolling survey method and data were extracted from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2012. Data of 1,421 elderly were finally selected and analyzed using kstrada. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographical characteristics of the subjects, health factors, oral health factors and depression. The oral health factors included subjective perception of oral health, alcohol consumption, exercise, smoking, and toothache. Results: Health factors influencing on the prevalence of depression were subjective health(p<0.001), stress(p<0.001), and alcohol consumption(p<0.05). Oral health factors related to the prevalence of depression were subjective oral health(p<0.05), annual dental checkup(p<0.01), and speaking problem(p<0.01). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the oral health promotion program for the elderly and help them maintain good quality of life and mental health.
In this study, we use data from the 2021 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to determine the relationship between oral health and depression in Korean adults and provide basic data to prevent oral diseases that affect depression. The final subjects of the study were 5,952 adults aged 19 or older among the 7,090 subjects who responded to the survey in the 3rd year of the 8th period (2021), and the total frequency discrepancy in the research results was omitted due to missing values. Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to confirm the relationship between oral health and depression. Depression according to general characteristics depends on gender (P < 0.001), number of household members (P = 0.047), and subjective health level (P < 0.001). Depression according to oral characteristics was statistically significant for complaints of chewing discomfort (P = 0.006) and toothache within the past year (P = 0.023). As a result of analyzing factors affecting depression, in terms of gender, men are 0.43 times more likely than women (95% CI: 0.28~0.65), and in terms of subjective health level, good compared to bad is 0.46 times more likely (95% CI: 0.28~0.75), the average was 0.59 times (95% CI: 0.40~0.87) higher, which was statistically significant. Therefore it seems necessary to improve mental health such as depression in order to relieve oral discomfort and to motive people to take responsibility for won health through oral health education programs related to oral health to oral health related to oral health and mental health.

Mobile oral exam at the facilities for the disabled in Seoul is to improve the oral health of the disabled who can hardly approach dental clinic. We analyzed 1609 oral exam records at 24 facilities (11 special-education schools, 10 living facilities, 2 mental hospitals, 1 health care facility for the elderly) in 2011. The purpose of this study is to figure out the oral health state of the disabled in facilities in Seoul and to compare with the non-disabled in National Survey 2010 and 2008. 1. Special-education school : DMFT index of age 15 is 5.4 which is higher than 3.6 (DMFT index of age 15) of National Survey in 2010. 2. Living facility : DMFT index of ages 35~44 is 8.4 which is higher than 5.2 (DMFT index of ages 35 ~44) of National Survey in 2008. DT rate is higher (31.3% vs 19.2%) and MT rate is lower (7.6% vs 15.5%). 3. Mental hospital : DMFT index of ages 35~44 is 11.3 which is higher than 5.2 (DMFT indext of age 35~44) of National Survey in 2008. DT rate is significantly higher (50.7% vs 19.2%) and FT rate is lower (35.1% vs 65.3%). 4. Health care facility for the elderly : DMFT index of ages 65~74 is 7.1 which is slightly lower than 8.7 (DMFT index of ages 65~74) of National Survey in 2008. The number of existing natural teeth is similar (16 vs 18).
Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between diabetes mellitus and oral disease in the Korea adults by using the representative data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) V. Methods: Using data from a cross-sectional survey of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V. The subjects were 5,602 adults over 19 years old. The survey data and the examination data are used for the independent variables. KNHANES included health status, nutrition survey, and oral examination. The health status was obtained by a self-reported questionnaire of the study subjects and direct interview was carried out on economic status, prevalence rate, and use of medical services. Results: The regular dental checkup of diabetes patients was significantly lower than the general population. Regular dental visits allow adults to receive early diagnosis and obtain restorative care at the first visit. The regular annual oral examination is very important to prevent and manage the chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus. Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus can be fully prevented and managed by the regular annual dental checkup. The establishment of the regular dental checkup system can prevent and manage the complication due to diabetes mellitus and other chronic diseases.
Objectives : This study aims to improve health and the quality of life of teenagers by identifying an association between the periodontal status and oral health behaviors of Korean teenagers using 2010 Korean National Oral Health Survey data. Methods : Subjects were teenagers aged from 12 to 15 in Korean National Oral Health Survey (KNOHS). The questionnaire consisted of periodontal status, general characteristics, periodontal related factors, and oral health related behaviors. Results : Gingival bleeding was found in 56.9% of teenagers because unhealthy periodontal status and tartars were found. Those who were 15 years old had unhealthier periodontal status than those who aged 12 years old. Those who lived in rural areas tended to have worse periodontal status than those who lived in the big cities. Access to dental floss, mouth rinsing solution and regular dental checkup tended to make the healthier periodontal status. Smokers had the worse periodontal status than the nonsmokers. Conclusions : The oral health care in the teenagers aged from 12 to 15 is very important because the permanent dentition is completed in this stage. It is necessary to lay emphasis on the oral health improvement and dental caries prevention program to the teenagers.
