  • Eosinophilia occurs commonly in many diseases including allergic diseases and helminthic infections. Toxocariasis has been suggested as one cause of eosinophilia. The present study was undertaken to examine the prevalence of toxocariasis in patients with eosinophilia and to identify the risk factors for toxocariasis. This prospective cohort study recruited a total of 81 patients with eosinophilia (34 males and 47 females) who visited the outpatient clinic at Seoul National University Hospital from January 2017 to February 2018 and agreed to participate in this study. The prevalence of toxocariasis was examined by T. canis-specific ELISA, and the various risk factors for toxocariasis were evaluated by a questionnaire survey. Among 81 patients with eosinophilia, 18 were positive for anti-T. canis antibodies (22.2%); 88.9% were male (16/18) and 11.1% were female (2/18). Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that males (OR 21.876, 95% CI: 1.667-287.144) with a history of consuming the raw meat or livers of animals (OR 5.899, 95% CI: 1.004-34.669) and a heavy alcohol-drinking habit (OR 8.767, 95% CI: 1.018-75.497) were at higher risk of toxocariasis in patients with eosinophilia. Toxocariasis should be considered a potential cause of eosinophilia when the patient has a history of eating the raw meat or livers of animals in Korea. A single course of albendazole is recommended to reduce the migration of Toxocara larvae in serologically positive cases with eosinophilia.

  • The NISS (Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer for Star formation history) onboard NEXTSat-1 was successfully launched on last December and is now under the operation phase. The capability of both imaging and spectroscopy is a unique function of the NISS. It has realized the imaging spectroscopy (R~20) with a wide field of view of $2{\times}2deg$. in a wide near-infrared range from 0.95 to $2.5{\mu}m$. The major scientific mission is to study the cosmic star formation history in the local and distant universe. It also demonstrated the space technologies related to the infrared spectro-photometry in space. The NISS is performing the imaging spectroscopic survey for local star-forming galaxies, clusters of galaxies, star-forming regions, ecliptic deep fields and so on. As an extension of the NISS, the SPEHREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) was selected as the NASA MIDEX (Medium-class Explorer) mission (PI Institute: Caltech). As an international partner, KASI will participate in the development and the science for SPHEREx. It will perform the first all-sky infrared spectro-photometric survey to probe the origin of our Universe, to explore the origin and evolution of galaxies, and to explore whether planets around other stars could harbor life. Compared to the NISS, the SPHEREx is designed to have a much wider FoV of $3.5{\times}11.3deg$. as well as wider spectral range from 0.75 to $5.0{\mu}m$. Here, we introduce the status of the two space missions.

  • This paper examines how nation-specific history of Asian war brides affects different representations of war brides in Velina Hasu Houston's Tea (1984) and Julia Cho's The Architecture of Loss (2003). While war brides had long been excluded from American history, Japanese war brides were brought to public attention in the 1980s. Korean war brides, on the other hand, were kept out of sight until the 2000s. Focusing on how this time gap is related to ethnic difference, this paper analyzes dramaturgical differences between the two plays such as the presence/absence of war bride on stage or ethnic solidarity/familial reconciliation as the main device of war bride memorialization. Such differences, the paper suggests, stem from ethnic/historical differences between Korean and Japanese war brides. Through historical interpretations of the plays, this paper argues that America's military relationships with Korea and Japan were reproduced within the Asian-American families of each drama in ways that raise questions about pan-Asian identity.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify patterns of diagnosis and to explore risk factors for type 2 diabetes beyond the postpartum period in women with a previous history of gestational diabetes, and to identify differences in such risk factors between early and late-onset (aged <45 and ${\geq}45$). Methods: Using epidemiological data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, a retrospective analysis of 175 women with various timings of type 2 diabetes diagnosis was performed. Results: The average age ($42.6{\pm}10.6$) at type 2 diabetes diagnosis was earlier than the general population, and obesity was prevalent with marked weight gains around 35 years old. Longer duration of breastfeeding was observed in women with late-onset of type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: For prevention of type 2 diabetes, early intervention is required, and modifiable factors such as weight control and breastfeeding should be taken into consideration for intervention strategies.

  • As Overturned-bowl Stupa of India, the origin of Stupa, is accepted by neighboring countries, pure form and local characteristics combined to bring change in unique style for each country. Such change is established as new style through combination with contemporary tradition in China. In this thesis, pattern of Stupa shown in Longmen Grottoes' Relief-Stupa relieves. Since study on how Indian Stupa was introduced into China has been partially undertaken, this study focuses on the pattern of Stupas from that perspective. 40 Stupas were explored during field work with naked eyes, among about 50 stupas reported on the research data by Longmen Grottoes Institute. Relief-Stupa relieves of Longmen Grottoes are as important as Yungang Grottoes. While Yungang Grottoes were built during a period when Gandhara style and Occidental expression were adopted and integrated with Chinese culture and Buddhism, building of Longmen Grottoes can be called a starting point of 'Chinese' style of Buddhist culture and Stupa, fully integrated with Chinese culture.

  • Confucian doctors (儒醫) emerged who either voluntarily or involuntarily studied medical science and participated in clinical practices. This was made possible by a newly established position known as Euiseoseupdokgwan (醫書習讀官), made up of officials who had knowledgeable about medical books, during the reign of King Sejong. By the 16th century, Confucian doctors who acquired knowledge from medical books began to practice more broadly. Most of the Confucian doctors had either direct or indirect connections with the Sarim faction 士林派, and had interest in practicing medicine in provincial regions. In 1610, Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑) was published, providing the Confucian doctors with solid academic and clinical foundations. From the late 17th century onwards, the medical environment quickly became commercialized and the status of Confucian doctors gradually weakened.

  • Objectives : Many curative methods are used utilized in order to rid human body of disease when people become sick. Traditional Korean medicine generally prescribe methods that involve acupunture, moxibustion, or herb formulae. However, different types of foods are sometimes used as well. While wondering the history and efficacy of Qi-elevation foods that were consumed by Koreans in the past, the author discovered that a record from the Joseon Dynasty, called The Daily Record of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty, henceforth the Records, contained information about different types of porridge. Hence, the author looked through the records of porridge as written in the historical material in an attempt to learn the examples and efficacy of medicine-porridge consumed in Joseon's royal palace. Methods : After searching for the keyword, 'porridge', in the Records as provided by the National Institute of Korean History, the author extracted the porridges recorded during the Yeongjo period that each has its own special name. Results : Different types of porridge were recorded in the Records as following: arrowroot porridge, bean-leaf porridge, mung bean porridge, bean porridge, malt-rice porridge, oriental arborvitae seed porridge, crucian porridge, lotus seed porridge, adlay porridge, red bean porridge, welsh onion porridge, milk porridge, seashell porridge, ginko nut porridge, black sesame porridge, and mandarin porridge. Each porridge was used for the purpose of alleviating any disease that afflicted the king Yeongjo or his royal family members in relation with the ingredient herb's medicinal function. Conclusions : These porridges consumed by the king Yeongjo and his royal family members were used not only with a purpose of aiding their body's recovery from disease, but with the goal to actively curing them of ailments.
