  • This paper introduces a cleaning process for removing submicron-sized particles from NiP hard disk substrates by the liquid-assisted laser cleaning technique. Measurements of cleaning performance and time-resolved optical diagnostics are performed to analyze the physical mechanism of contaminant removal. The results reveal that nanosecond laser pulses are effective for removing the contaminants regardless of the wavelength and that a thermal mechanism involving explosive vaporization of liquid dominates the cleaning process.

  • We present an all-fiberized power-scalable, sub-nanosecond mode-locked laser based on a frequency-shifted-feedback ring cavity comprised of an erbium-doped fiber, a downshifting acousto-optic modulator (AOM), and a bandpass filter (BPF). With the aid of the frequency-shifted feedback mechanism provided by the AOM and the narrow filter bandwidth of 0.45 nm, we generate self-starting, mode-locked optical pulses with a spectral bandwidth of ~0.098 nm and a pulsewidth of 432 to 536 ps. In particular, the output power is readily scalable with pump power while keeping the temporal shape and spectral bandwidth. This is obtained via the consolidation of bound pulse modes circulating at the fundamental repetition rate of the cavity. In fact, the consolidated pulses form a single-entity envelope of asymmetric Gaussian shape where no discrete internal pulses are perceived. This result highlights that the inclusion of the narrow BPF into the cavity is crucial to achieving the consolidated pulses.

  • The interaction of high-intensity, focused, nanosecond laser light with matter results in the production of high-temperature plasma, which in turn emits an intense pulse of x rays. The x-ray spectrum consists of strong line components of several keV photon energy and broad continuum. Such an x-ray source provides many advantages over conventional ones for many applications. Pulse nature of the x-ray emission is well-suited for studying transient phenomena and for imaging living biological specimen. Recent experiments have also shown that the laser plasma x ray may be used for x ray lithography. These studies and other applications will be discussed in detail.

  • The laser-induced transient grating method is applied to study the dynamics of the nematic MBBA film. The nanosecond laser pulses of 355 nm are used to make the transient grating and the cw He-Ne laser of 633 nm is used to probe the dynamics. Strong multiple order diffractions are observed at high nematic temperatures. The reordering process induced by the phototransformed state, which is the locally melted state from the nematic sample, is attributed to the main origin of the multiple order diffractions from the nematic MBBA. The characteristics of the multiple order gratings are discussed with the grating profiles simulated from the multiple diffraction signals.

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) provides high electrical conductivity and transparency at visible and near-IR wavelengths. ITO is widely used as a transparent electrode for the fabrication of LCDs, OLEDs, and many kinds of optical applications. It is widely employed for electrodes in various electric and display sectors because of its transparency in the visible range and high conductivity. Therefore, one issue is removing a specific area of a layer of material such as ITO or metallic film on a substrate, without affecting the properties of the substrate. ITO-on-glass removal using a laser is friendlier to the environment than traditional methods. In this study, ablation of ITO film on glass using a femtosecond-laser micromachining system (wavelength 1026 nm, pulse duration 150 fs) and a nanosecond-laser micromachining system (wavelength 1027 nm, pulse duration 5 ns) are described, compared, and analyzed.

  • In this study, an injection mold with ultra-small surface properties was manufactured using nanosecond laser processing. A superhydrophobic characteristic analysis was performed on the PET specimen manufactured through this. To this end, a hydrophobic pattern was defined using the Cassie-Baxter model. The defined features were selected with a spot diameter of 25um and pitch spacing of 30um and 35um. As a result of the basic experiment, it was confirmed that the fine pattern shape had an aspect ratio of 1:1 when the pitch interval was 35um and 20 iterations. Through the determined processing conditions, a hydrophobic pattern was implemented on the core surface of KP4. A specimen with a hydrophobic pattern was produced through injection molding. The height of the molded hydrophobic pattern is 20 ㎛ less than the depth of the core and the contact angle measurement results are 92.1°. This is a contact angle smaller than the superhydrophobic criterion. Molding analysis was performed to analyze the cause of this, and it was analyzed that the molding was not molded due to the lack of pressure in the injection machine.

  • Pulsed laser ablation is important in a variety of engineering applications involving precise removal of materials in laser micromachining and laser treatment of bio-materials. Particularly, detailed numerical simulation of complex laser ablation phenomena in air, taking the interaction between ablation plume and air into account, is required for many practical applications. In this paper, high-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied with emphasis on the vaporization model, especially recondensation ratio over the Knudsen layer. Furthermore, parametric studies are carried out to analyze the effect of laser fluence and background pressure on surface ablation and the dynamics of ablation plume. In the numerical calculation, the temperature, pressure, density, and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method. The plume dynamics is calculated considering the effect of mass diffusion into the ambient air and plasma shielding. To verify the computation results, experiments for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave are conducted as well.

  • The dynamics of laser-induced plasma/shock wave and the interaction with a surface in the laser shock cleaning process are analyzed by optical diagnostics. Shock wave is generated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in air or with N$_2$, Ar, and He injection into the focal spot. The shock speed is measured by monitoring the photoacoustic probe-beam deflection signal under different conditions. In addition, nanosecond time-resolved images of shock wave propagation and interaction with the substrate are obtained by the laser-flash shadowgraphy. The results reveal the effect of various operation parameters of the laser shock cleaning process on shock wave intensity, energy-conversion efficiency, and flow characteristics. Discussions are made on the cleaning mechanisms based on the experimental observations.
