The nano-size hoenycomb structures have the higher ratio of the surface to the volume than macro-size honeycomb structures, and they can maximize the functionality of the electrical and chemical catalyst. The mechanical behaviors of the nano-sized structures are different from ones of the macro-size structure, and it is caused by the surface effect. This surface effect can be investigated by the atomistic simulation; however, the prediction of mechanical behaviors of the nano-sized honeycombs are practically impossible due to excessive computational resources and computation time. In this paper, by combining the bridging method considering the surface stress elasticity model with homogenization method, the mechanical behaviors of the nano-sized honeycombs are predicted efficiently.

Chromium carbides have the excellent wear properties as transition metal carbides. Their tribological applications were studied recently. The nano-sized ceramic could enhance the mechanical and electronical properties of materials. In this study, it was observed to test the wear of the coated surface of nano-sized chromium carbides. The nano-sized chromium carbides were produced by sol-gel processing. Coating surface of produced powders was obtained front plasma spraying. Wear test of coating surface was held increasing temperature. The friction coefficient and the wear loss were testified in dry environment. And the worn surfaces were analyzed by XRD and SEM.
Bee pollen is one of many types of alternative remedies, and it has been used for a long time throughout the world. It has numerous health effects, including antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, immune modulation, enhanced cell proliferation, and even anti-carcinogenic effects. This study was designed to elucidate the effects of bee pollen on benign prostatic hyperplasia in rodents. For this experiment, we used nano-sized bee pollen produced through wet-grinding technology, thereby the extraction efficiency of the active ingredients in the bee pollen was significantly enhanced. First, We found that nano-sized bee pollen significantly reduced the size of prostates enlarged by chronic testosterone administration. In addition, nano-sized bee pollen significantly reduced the plasma concentration of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Interestingly, nano-sized bee pollen did not reduce the testosterone-induced increase in the plasma concentration of prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$). The beneficial effects of nano-sized bee pollen in reducing both the size of the prostate and the plasma concentration of PSA was comparable to that of dutasteride. Finally, nano-sized bee pollen did not cause damage in LNCaP cells which are androgen-sensitive human prostate adenocarcinoma cells. Together, these data indicate that nano-sized bee pollen may be able to be used as a good alternative remedy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite was prepared and the effects of alumina content on the electrical and mechanical properties were investigated in order to develop an insulation material for gas insulated switchgear (GIS). Nano-sized alumina (average particle size: 30 μm) was also incorporated into the epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite. An electrical insulation breakdown strength test was carried out in sphere-sphere electrodes and the data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. Tensile strength was measured at a crosshead speed of 10 mm/min using a universal testing machine. Alumina content was varied from 0 wt% to 70 wt%.). As micro-sized alumina content increased, insulation breakdown strength increased until 40 wt% alumina content and decreased after that content. The tensile strength of a neat epoxy system was 82.2 MPa and that value for 60 wt% alumina content was 91.8 MPa, which was 111.7% higher than inthe neat epoxy system. The insulation breakdown strength of micro-sized alumina (60 wt%)/nano-sized alumina (1 phr) glycerol diglycidyl ether (GDE) (1 phr) composite was 54.2 MPa, which was 116% higher than the strength of the system without nano-sized alumina.

Getter property of nano-sized metallic powders was evaluated as a possible candidate for the future getter material. For the purpose, Ti powders of about 50 nm were prepared by electrical wire explosion. Commercial Ti powders of about 22 micrometer were tested as well for comparison. The room-temperature hydrogen-sorption speed of nano-sized Ti powders was $1.34\;L/sec{\cdot}cm^{2}$ which was more than 4 times higher than that of micron-sized ones. The value is comparable to or even higher than those of commercial products. Its sorption speed increases with activation temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ above which it deteriorates due to low-temperature sintering effect of nano-sized particles.

An alumina membrane with nano-sized pore array by anodic oxidation using thin film aluminum deposited on silicon wafer was fabricated. It is important that the sample prepared by metal deposition method has a flat aluminum surface and a good adhesion between the silicon wafer and the thin film aluminum. The oxidation time was controlled by observation of current variation. While the oxalic acid with 0.2M was used for low voltage anodization under 100V, the chromic acid with 0.1M was used for high voltage anodization over 100V. The nano-sized pores with diameter of 60~120nm was obtained by low voltage anodization of 40~90V and those of 200~300nm was obtained by high voltage anodization of 120~160V. Finally, the sample was immersed to the phosphoric acid with 0.1M concentration to etching the barrier layer. The sample will be applied to electronic sensors, field emission display, and template for nano-structure.

In papermaking industry, inorganic fillers are widely used for the purpose of improving opacity, brightness, printability, uniformity and dimensional stability. They are also useful for production costs and energy savings. In the past, inorganic fillers in papermaking industry only focused on micro-scale but recently, new trials on nano-powdered technology are applying. Even nano-powdered fillers are rapidly utilized for improving the optical and surface properties in coating and surface sizing, there still have some problems in wet-end process due to poor dispersibility and retention. In this study, nano-particled calcium carbonate was produced by milling the PCC and its applicability between micro sized and nano sized calcium carbonated was compared in wet-end process, and finally the sheet properties were evaluated. Nano-PCC was not retained in sheet structure without applying retention system, but with retention system nano-powdered PCC was absorbed on fiber surface with expanding the fiber networks. The application of PAM-bentonite system has resulted in high ash retention and bulky structure for copier paper, and good optical properties in brightness and opacity. However, it required to solve the weakness of low tensile property due to interruption of hydrogen bonding by nano fillers.
In this report, we present the results of a study on the effects of the particle size on the properties of the Prussian blue (PB) analog $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$. A novel synthesis method of the $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$ nano-particles using an organic solvent, formamide, is employed. The size of the PB particles is found to be 100-150 nm for the samples prepared in the formamide solvent, which is much smaller than that of the samples prepared using water only. The broadening of the X-ray diffraction peaks of the nano-sized PB samples is attributed to the lattice disorder and a dramatic reduction in the particle size. The compositions of the samples are confirmed by an energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and the result proves that the samples are actually $Na_xMn_y[Fe(CN){_6}]$ Prussian blue. The UV-vis spectra show a broad intervalence charge-transfer (CT) band in the visible region between 400 and 700 nm, and the absorption decreases abruptly in the green region for the nano-sized PB sample. A divergence between the field cooled (FC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curves is observed for the nano-sized PB sample at 11 K, indicating that nanoparticles in the sample are single domain superparamagnets with a blocking temperature of 11 K. Our results reveal that the nano-sized PB samples show significantly different optical and magnetic properties than those of the bulk PB samples.

$Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles with nano-sized and non-aggregation characteristics were prepared by spray pyrolysis using the spray solution containing polymeric precursor and $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux material. Nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles. The $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles had nano-size and non-aggregation characteristics after heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ when the addition amount of $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%. The mean size of particles were 200 nm and 400 nm when the amount of flux was 1 wt.% and 3 wt.%, respectively. The prepared phosphor particles had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product regardless of the content of$ Li_2$$CO_3$ flux and had the maximum brightness when the content of flux was 5 wt %. The photoluminescence intensity of the nano-sized $Gd_2$$O_3$:Eu phosphor particles containing 3 wt.% $Li_2$$CO_3$ flux was 125% in comparison with that of the micron-sized $Y_2$$O_3$:Eu commercial product.
Objectives This study was conducted to determine whether nano-sized carbon black exposure results in greater damage in high fat diet-induced overweight rats than normal weight ones and to identify the possible causes of any differences. Methods Two groups of Sprague-Dawley rats allocated by body weight (normal and overweight) were exposed to aerosolized nano-sized carbon black for 6 hours a day, 5 days per week over a 4-week period. Differential cell counts, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and albumin concentrations were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, and histopathological findings in the lungs were evaluated. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$) and interleukin (IL)-6 were measured in BAL fluid and supernatants of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated lymphocyte culture. Results Rats exposed to high concentrations of nano-sized carbon black showed significantly increased (p <0.05) polymorphonuclear leukocyte number and LDH activity in the BAL fluid from both overweight and normal rats. Mild histopathological changes were observed in normal rats irrespective of carbon black concentrations. However, severe histological scores were found in overweight rats ($1.75{\pm}0.46$, $2.25{\pm}0.46$, and $2.88{\pm}0.35$ after low, medium, and high concentration exposures). Proinflammatory cytokine levels of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 were significantly higher in the supernatant of LPS-stimulated lymphocytes of overweight rats, whereas there was no significant difference in the BAL fluid between normal and overweight rats. Conclusions Inflammation and damage to lungs exposed to nano-sized carbon black was more severe in high fat diet-induced overweight rats compared to normal rats.
