  • Recently, Since the advanced nano technology develops unique physical and chemical properties different from those of the conventional materials. Normal concretes mixed with nano size materials have been studied to improve the fire-resistance with high strength and lower heat conductivity. In this pilot study, the nano-particle contents in the specimens ($\Phi$10\times20 cm$) were 0, 2, 4, and 6$\%$ by weight of cement, and fire-temperatures 800$^{circ}C$ was considered. The results show that as the nano-particle contents increases, fire resistance of concrete are superior to those of the ordinary concrete. Also, the experimental results show that fire resistance of nano Aluminum hydroxide dispersed concrete are superior to those of the nano-SiO2 concrete.

  • Although dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air has been applied to a wider range of aftertreatment processes for HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants), due to its high electron density and energy, its potential use as precharging dust particles is not well known. In this work, we measured size distributions of bimodal aerosol particles and estimated collection efficiency of the particles by an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) using DBD as particle charger. To examine the particle collection with DBD charger, nano size particles of NaCl(20∼100nm) and DOS (50∼500nm) were generated by a tube furnace and an atomizer, respectively. For experimental conditions of 60㎐, 11㎸ and 60 lpm, the particle collection efficiency for the hybrid system was over 85%, based on the number of particles captured.

  • Recent cleaning technologies of mask in extremely ultraviolet semiconductor processes were reviewed, focused on newly developed issues such as particle size determination or hydrocarbon and tin contaminations. In detail, critical particle size was defined and proposed for mask cleaning where nanosized particles and its various shapes would result in surface atomic ratio increase vigorously. A new cleaning model also was proposed with amphoteric behavior of electrolytically ionized water which had already shown excellent particle removing efficiency. Having its non-equilibrium and amphoteric properties, electrolyzed ion water seemed to oxidize contaminant surface selectively in nano-scale and then to lift up oxidized ones from mask surface very effectively. This assumption should be further investigated in future in junction with hydrogen bonding and cluster of water molecules.

  • Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.

  • Recently inside nano liposome particles or nano-emulsions which contain tough-melting physiology activity materials or the coefficient of low organism utilization promote the coefficient of organism utilization, so this part has been studied a lot because they can absorb selectly cosmetics, specially physiology activity materials, into the skin. Also, in particle size, cells interstitial lipid interval are 30~50nm, so nano-emulsions that the size is similar to 30~50 nm are made to study for absorbing quickly into the skin. And transparent skin which contains oils in common skin lotion dosage form has become the center of public interest. The used nano-emulsions in this study were unsaturated lecithin/co-surfactant! ethanol/ oil / water. And polysorbate 20/ polysorbate 80/ Dicetyl phosphate/hydrogenated .caster oil/ isoceteth-20/SLS were used in co-surfactant. The used oils were cyclomethicone and caprylic/capric triglyceride. The manufacturing process was that microfluidizer was fixed in 1000bar and transit times were changed from 1 to 10 times. From transparency and particle size, the transparency sequence was SLS> polysorbate 20= polysorbate 80> isoceteth-20> dicetyl phosphate >hydrogenated caster oil and the particle size was small. Specially cyclomethicone nano-emulsions, when we made unsaturated lecithin /SLS /ethanol/water/cyclomethicone, cyclomethicone 5% was good for transparency. And 20% of this was used for making transparent skin toner in common skin dosage form.

  • Emission standards for passenger diesel engines are becoming more and more stringent. Especially, Europe started the regulation of nano-particles from 2011 with EURO 5b. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of fuel injection strategy on combustion and nano-particle emission in a small diesel engine. In this study, we conducted combustion analysis and measured both the weight of PM and number of nano-particels. At first, the optimum injection timing was determined with fixed engine operating conditions, such as engine speed, load, and fuel injection quantity. After that, the injection timing was controlled, and the effect of pilot injection was investigated. The number of nano-particles increased as engine load decreases, and it increased up to 10 times depending on the change of injection timing. The weight of PM emissions was increased at low load, and the PM emissions increased with increasing the number of pilot injections.

  • Addressing the challenge of identifying an appropriate set of material and irradiation parameters for accurate simulation models using crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM), this study proposes a novel two-stage method for nano-indentation modeling of ion-irradiated face-centered cubic (FCC) materials. It includes implementing the strain-gradient crystal plasticity (SGCP) theory with irradiation effects and the calibration of simulation parameters using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with experimental data. The proposed method consists of two stages: establishing CPFEM without irradiation effects in stage 1 and modeling irradiation effects based on CPFEM in stage 2. Modeling the nano-indentation test of ion-irradiated stainless steel 304 (SS304) using real experimental data is conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. The accuracy of the calibration method using PSO is verified through comparisons between simulation and experimental results for force-indentation depth and hardness-indentation depth relationships under both unirradiated and irradiated conditions. Moreover, effect of ion-irradiation on the mechanical behavior during the nano-indentation of single crystal SS304 is also examined to demonstrate that the proposed method is a powerful approach for nano-indentation modeling of ion-irradiated FCC single crystals using SGCP theory and the PSO algorithm.

  • Spot blotch disease of wheat caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem is considered as an economically important disease which affects all the growing stages of wheat crop. Therefore, it is important to search some effective management strategies against the spot blotch pathogen. Some synthetic elicitor compounds (salicylic acid, isonicotinic acid, and chitosan) and nano-particles (silver and aluminum) were tested against the pathogen to observe the change in biochemical activity and defense action of wheat plant against spot blotch disease. All the tested elicitor compounds and nano-particles showed a significant increase in activity of peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and total phenol over control. The highest increase in activity of peroxidase was recorded at 72 h from chitosan at 2 mM and 96 h from silver nano-particle at 100 ppm. Maximum PPO and total phenol activity were recorded from chitosan at 2 mM and silver nano-particle at 100 ppm as compared to pathogen-treated and healthy control. The lowest percent disease index, lowest no. of spots/leaf, and no. of infected leaves/plant were found in silver nano-particle at 100 ppm and chitosan at 2 mM, respectively. The use of defense inducer compounds results in significantly up-regulated enzymatic activity and reduced spot blotch disease. Therefore, chitosan and silver nano-particle could be used as alternative methods for the management of spot blotch disease.
