  • Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) is a fast-growing wood species that is widely utilized for light construction and other purposes in Indonesia. The objectives of the current study were to determine the effects of monoethylene glycol (MEG) and SiO2 nanoparticles (nano SiO2) impregnation treatment on the dimensional stability and density of jabon wood and to identify the characteristics of impregnated jabon wood. Wood samples were immersed in water (as untreated), MEG, 0.5% MEGSiO2, then impregnated by applying 0.5 bar of vacuum for 60 min, and then applying 2.5 bar of pressure for 120 min. The results showed that impregnation with MEG and Nano SiO2 had a significant effect on the dimensional stability of jabon wood. Polymers can fill cell walls in wood indicated by increasing weight percentgain, antiswelling efficiency, bulking effect, and density, then decreasing in water uptake value. Jabon wood morphology by using SEM showed that MEGSiO2 polymers can cover part of the pitsin the wood vessel wall of jabon. This finding was reinforced by EDX results showing that the silicon content was increased due to the addition of SiO2 nano. The XRD diffraction pattern indicated that MEGSiO2 treatment increased the degree of crystallinity in wood samples. Overall, treatment with 0.5% MEGSiO2 led to the most improvement in the dimensional stability of 5-year-old jabon wood in this study.

  • In this study, we have investigated the role of a metal oxide hole injection layer (HIL) between an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) electrode and an organic hole transporting layer (HTL) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Nickel Oxide films were deposited at different deposition times of 0 to 60 seconds, thus leading to a thickness from 0 to 15 nm on ITO/glass substrates. To study the influence of NiO film thickness on the properties of OLEDs, the relationships between NiO/ITO morphology and surface properties have been studied by UV-visible spectroscopy measurements and AFM microscopy. The dependences of the I-V-L properties on the thickness of the NiO layers were examined. Comparing these with devices without an NiO buffer layer, turn-on voltage and luminance have been obviously improved by using the NiO buffer layer with a thickness smaller than 10 nm in OLEDs. Moreover, the efficiency of the device ITO/NiO (< 5 nm)/NPB/$Alq_3$/ LiF/Al has increased two times at the same operation voltage (8V). Insertion of a thin NiO layer between the ITO and HTL enhances the hole injection, which can increase the device efficiency and decrease the turn-on voltage, while also decreasing the interface roughness.

  • $TiN_xO_y/TiN_x$ multi-layer thin films with a high resistance(${\sim}k{\Omega}$) were deposited on $SiO_2/Si$ substrates at room temperature by sputtering. The $TiN_x$ thin films show island and smooth surface morphology in samples prepared by ${\alpha}$ and RF magnetron sputtering, respectively. $TiN_xO_y/TiN_x$ multi-layer in has been developed to control temperature coefficient of resistance(TCR) by the incorporation of $TiN_x$ layer(positive TCR) inserted into $TiN_xO_y$ layers(negative TCR). Electrical and structural properties of sputtered $TiN_xO_y/TiN_x$ multi-layer films were investigated as a function of annealing temperature. In order to achieve a stable high resistivity, multi-layer films were annealed at various temperatures in oxygen ambient. Samples annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 min exhibited good TCR value of approximately $-54 ppm/^{\circ}C$ and a stable high resistivity around $20k{\Omega}/sq$. with good reversibility.

  • Sengon (Falcataria moluccana Miq.) tree offers a wood of low quality and durability owing to its low density and thin cell walls. This study aimed to improve the properties of sengon wood by making the wood magnetic, producing new functions, and characterizing magnetic sengon wood. Each wood sample was treated using one of the following impregnation solutions: Untreated, 7.5% nano magnetite-furfuryl alcohol (Fe3O4-FA), 10% nano Fe3O4-FA, and 12.5% nano Fe3O4-FA. The impregnation process began with vacuum treatment at 0.5 bar for 2 h, followed by applying a pressure of 1 bar for 2 h. The samples were then tested for dimensional stability and density and characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) analysis. The results showed that the Fe3O4-FA impregnation treatment considerable affected the dimensional stability, measured in terms of weight percent gain, anti-swelling efficiency, water uptake, and bulking effect, as well as the density of sengon wood. Changes in wood morphology were detected by the presence of Fe deposits in the cell walls and cell cavities of the wood using SEM-EDX analysis. XRD and FTIR analyses showed the appearance of magnetite peaks in the diffractogram and Fe-O functional groups. Based on the VSM analysis, treated sengon wood is classified as a superparamagnetic material with soft magnetic properties. Overall, 10% Fe3O4-FA treatment led to the highest increase in dimensional stability and density of sengon wood.

  • For white light emitting diode (LED) applications, it has been reported that Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) in nano-sized phosphor performs better than it does in micro-sized particles. This is because nano-sized YAG:Ce can reduce internal light scattering when coated onto a blue LED surface. Recently, there have been many reports on the synthesis of nano-sized YAG particles using bottom-up method, such as co-precipitation method, sol-gel process, hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, and glycothermal method. However, there has been no report using top-down method. Top-down method has advantages than bottom-up method, such as large scale production and easy control of doping concentration and particle size. Therefore, in this study, nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were synthesized by a high energy beads milling process with varying beads size, milling time and milling steps. The beads milling process was performed by Laboratory Mill MINICER with ZrO2 beads. The phase identity and morphology of nano-sized YAG:Ce were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. By controlling beads size, milling time and milling steps, we synthesized a size-tunable and uniform nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors which average diameters were 100, 85 and 40 nm, respectively. After milling, there was no impurity and all of the peaks were in good agreement with YAG (JCPDS No. 33-0040). Luminescence and quantum efficiency (QE) of nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors were measured by fluorescence spectrometer and QE measuring instrument, respectively. The synthesized YAG:Ce absorbed light efficiently in the visible region of 400-500 nm, and showed single broadband emission peaked at 550 nm with 50% of QE. As a result, by considering above results, high energy beads milling process could be a facile and reproducible synthesis method for nano-sized YAG:Ce phosphors.

  • One-dimensional nanostructures have attracted increasing attention because of their unique electronic, optical, optoelectrical, and electrochemical properties on account of their large surface-to-volume ratio and quantum confinement effect. Vertically grown nanowires have a large surface-to-volume ratio. The vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process has attracted considerable attention for its self-alignment capability during the growth of nanostructures. In this study, vertically aligned silicon oxide nano-pillars were grown on Si\$SiO_2$(300 nm)\Pt substrates using two-zone thermal chemical vapor deposition system via the VLS process. The morphology and crystallographic properties of the grown silicon oxide nano-pillars were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The diameter and length of the grown silicon oxide nano-pillars were found to be dependent on the catalyst films. The body of the silicon oxide nano-pillars exhibited an amorphous phase, which is consisted with Si and O. The head of the silicon oxide nano-pillars was a crystalline phase, which is consisted with Si, O, Pt, and Ti. The vertical alignment of the silicon oxide nano-pillars was attributed to the preferred crystalline orientation of the catalyst Pt/Ti alloy. The vertically aligned silicon oxide nano-pillars are expected to be applied as a functional nano-material.

  • We report on the capacitively coupled O2 plasma etching of PMMA and polycarbonate (PC) with a diffusion pump. Plasma process variables were process pressure and CCP power at 5 sccm $O_2$ gas flow rate. Characterization was done in order to analyze etch rate, etch selectivity, surface roughness, and morphology using stylus surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy. Self bias decreased with increase of process pressure in the range of 25$\sim$180 mTorr. We found an important result for optimum pressure for the highest etch rate of PMMA and PC, which was 60 mTorr. PMMA and PC had etch rates of 0.46 and 0.28 ${\mu}m$/min under pressure conditions, respectively. More specifically, etch rates of the materials increased when the pressure changed from 25 mTorr to 60 mTorr. However, they reduced when the pressure increased further after 60 mTorr. RMS roughnesses of the etched surfaces were in the range of 2.2$\sim$2.9 nm. Etch selectivity of PMMA to a photoresist was $\sim$1.5:1 and that of PC was $\sim$0.9:1. Etch rate constant was about 0.04 ${\mu}m$/minW and 0.02 ${\mu}m$/minW for PMMA and PC, respectively, with the CCP power change at 5 sccm $O_2$ and 40 mTorr process pressure. PC had more erosion on the etched sidewall than PMMA did. The OES data showed that the intensity of the oxygen atomic peak (777.196 nm) proportionally increased with the CCP power.

  • Nanocrystalline ceria particles were prepared by using the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. The prepared ceria particles were found to be spherical and non-agglomerated by the SEM and TEM analyses. It was found that carrier gas influences the size and morphology. It was found that the air stream of carrier gas results in porous agglomerated structure of ceria abrasives, whereas solid nano-sphere can be obtained in a more oxidizing atmosphere.
