  • The Ni formation behavior from the reduction of NiO nano crystals in the $H_2/N_2$ gas mixtures. The NiO nano crystals were synthesized by heat-treating nickel nitrate$(Ni(NO_3)_2\cdot6H_O)$ in the air at $500^{\circ}C$, and had an octahedral shape and the particle size of 200~500 nm. The NiO nano-crystals had well-developed (111) planes which is hardly formed in normal synthetic conditions. The reduction process was carried out at 300 and $600^{\circ}C$ for 15 and 60 minutes, respectively. When the NiO nano-crystals were reduced at $300^{\circ}C$, the Ni particles sustained the same octahedral shape as NiO, while Ni particles were to agglomerate at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • Single crystal diamonds are in great demand in such fields as mechanical, electronic applications and optoelectronics. Large area single crystal diamonds are attracting attention in future industries for mass production and low cost. In this study, hot filament CVD (HFCVD) is used to grow large area single crystal diamond. However, the growth rate of large area single crystal diamond using HFCVD is known to be very low. The goal of this study is to use single crystal diamond substrates in HFCVD with methane-hydrogen gas mixtures to increase the growth rate of single crystal diamond and to optimize the conditions by analysing the effects of deposition conditions for high quality crystallinity. The deposition pressure, the ratio of CH4/H2 gas, the substrate temperature and the distance between the filament and the substrate were optimized. The sample used a 4×4 (mm2) size single crystal diamond substrate (100), the CH4/H2 gas ratio was fixed at 5%, the substrate temperature was synthesized to about 1000℃. At this time, the deposition pressure was changed to three types of 50, 75, 85 Torr and deposited. Finally, optimization was investigated under pressure conditions to analyse the growth rate and quality of single crystal diamond.

  • In conventional liquid crystal display(LCD) manufacturing process, Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) as transparent electrode and rubbing process of polyimide as alignment layer are essential process to apply electric field and align liquid crystal molecules. However, there are some limits that deposition of ITO requires high vacuum state, and rubbing process might damage the device with tribolectric discharge. In this paper, we made nanocomposite with PEDOT:PSS and MWNT to replace ITO and constructed alignment layer by nano imprint lithography with nano wrinkle pattern, to replace rubbing process. These replacement made that only one PEDOT:PSS/MWNT film can function as two layers of ITO and polyimide alignment layer, which means simplification of process. Transferred nano wrinkle patterns functioned well as alignment layer, and we found out lowered threshold voltage and shortened response time as MWNT content increase, which is related to increment of electric conductivity of the film. Through this study, it may able to contribute to process simplification, reducing process cost, and suggesting a solution to disadvantage of rubbing process.

  • Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second harmonic generation (SHG) waveguide devices for a green light generation were fabricated by a periodically patterned electrode on the +Z crystal surface and homogeneous LiCl solution using a 5 mol% MgO doped congruent z-cut lithium niobate crystals. Using selective chemical etching, we confirmed the periodic (${\sim}6.8{\mu}m$) domain inverted structure and measured SHG properties of fabricated periodically poled MgO : $LiNbO_3$ ridge-type waveguides.

  • Recently, the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode in liquid crystal displays has been used mainly for high image quality and high-resolution liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In this review paper, the fundamental switching principle of the FFS mode, with its excellence over other LC modes in electro-optic performance, will be described. In addition, the development history, present technical issues, and future of the FFS LCD will be discussed.

  • For an aspect ratio (transport length-to-width) of 5, Pr=1.13, Le=1.91, Pe=4.3, Cv=1.01, $P_B=20\;Torr$, the effects of addition of inert gas Ne on thermally buoyancy-driven convection ($Gr=2.44{\times}10^3$) are numerically investigated for further understanding and insight into essence of transport phenomena in two dimensional horizontal enclosures. For $10K{\leq}{\Delta}T{\leq}50\;K$, the crystal growth rate increases from 10 K up to 20 K, and then is slowly decreased until ${\Delat}T=50\;K$, which is likely to be due to the effects of thermo-physical properties stronger than the temperature gradient corresponding to driving force for thermal convection. The dimensional maximum velocity gratitude reflecting the intensity of thermal convection is directly and linearly proportional to the temperature difference between the source and crystal regions. The rate is first order-exponentially decreased for $2{\leq}Ar{\leq}5$. This is related to the finding that the effects of side walls tend to stabilize convection in the growth reactor. In addition, the rate is first order exponentially decayed for $10{\leq}P_B{\leq}200\;Torr$.

  • Our computational studies for the physical vapor transport crystal growth of $Hg_2Cl_2-Cl_2$ system evidence suggests that the PVT growth process exhibits the diffusion-dominated behaviors for aspect ratios more than and equal to 10, which would provide purely diffusive transport conditions adequate to microgravity environments less than $10^{-3}g_0$. Also, the regimes of high temperature difference based on the fixed source temperature of $380^{\circ}C$, where ${\Delta}T$ is relatively large enough for the crystal growth of mercurous chloride, the transport rates do not keep increasing with ${\Delta}T$ but tend to some constant value of $2.12\;mole\;cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. For the aspect ratios of 5, 10, and 20, the transport rate is directly proportional to the total pressure of the system under consideration. For Ar = 5, the rate is increased by a factor of 2.3 with increasing the total pressure from 403 Torr to 935 Torr, i.e., by a factor of 2.3. For both Ar = 10 and 20, the rate is increased by a factor of 1.25 with increasing the total pressure from 403 Torr to 935 Torr.

  • Electro-optical properties of liquid crystal display (LCD) using fringe-field switching (FFS) devices depend on many parameters such as cell retardation, electrode structure, magnitude and sign of dielectric anisotropy, rubbing angle and cell gap. In this paper, the light efficiency of FFS device depending on magnitude of positive dielectric anisotropy with other cell parameters such as rubbing angle and angle and cell gap have been explored compared with FFS device using LC with negative dielectric anisotropy.

  • Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) films, of which the liquid crystal has negative dielectric anisotropy, were prepared from the phase separation between MJ001317 and a variety of compositions of resins by common polymerization induced phase separation method. In this work, the effects of resin compositions have been systematically investigated and it was found that the morphology and size of droplet, which is closely related to electro-optic properties, mainly depend on the rate of polymerization and cross-linking density for each resin composition. The reverse mode PDLC films from this newly developed formulation containing TPGDA/EHA/HMPPO showed the good off-state transmittance, contrast ratio (19/1), and relatively low driving voltage(10V).
