  • Application of nanomaterials to cementitious composites has been attempted with the rapid development of nanotechnology since the 1990s. Various nanomaterials such as carbon nanotube, graphene, nano-SiO2, nano-TiO2, nano-Al2O3, nano-Clay, and nano-Magnetite have been applied to cementitious composites to improve the mechanical properties and the durability, and to impart a variety of functionality. In-depth information on the effect of nanomaterials on the hydration reaction, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of cementitious nanocomposites is provided in the present study. Specifically, this paper mostly deals with the previous studies on the heat evolution characteristics of cementitious nanomaterials at an early age of curing, and the pore and the compressive strength characteristics of cementitious nanocomposites. Furthermore, the effect of nanomaterials on the cementitious nanocomposites was systematically discussed with the reviews.

  • Nanocomposites were prepared through the compounding of rubber and clay. Measurements of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of different compositions over a temperature range $70-100^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of these rubber/clay nanocomposites are superior to those of existing rubber materials. In this study, by using the parameter of the maximum Green.Lagrange strain appearing at certain locations, the relationship between fatigue life and maximum Green.Lagrange strain, and the correlations between test-piece tests and bench tests of actual rubber components are proved. In order to predict the fatigue life of rubber components at the design stage, a simple procedure of life prediction is suggested. The predicted fatigue lives of the rubber engine mounts agree fairly well with the fatigue lives determined experimentally.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate-co-acrylonitrile) [P(MMA-co-AN)]/Na-MMT nanocomposites were synthesized through emulsion polymerization with pristine Na-MMT. The nanocomposites were exfoliated up to 20 wt% content of pristine Na-MMT relative to the amount of MMA and AN, and exhibited enhanced storage moduli, E', relative to the neat copolymer. The exfoliated morphology of the nanocomposite was confirmed by XRD and TEM. 2-Acryla-mido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) widened the galleries between the clay layers before polymerization and facilitated the comonomers, penetration into the clay to create the exfoliated nanocomposites. The onset of the thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites shifted to a higher temperature as the clay content increased. By calculating areas of tan$\delta$ of the nanocomposites, we observed that the nanocomposites show more solid-like behavior as the clay content increases. The dynamic storage modulus and complex viscosity increased with clay content. The complex viscosity showed shear-thinning behavior as the clay content increased. The Young's moduli of the nano-composites are higher than that of the neat copolymer and they increase steadily as the silicate content increases, as a result of the exfoliated structure at high clay content.

  • Blends of poly(acrylic acid- co-maleic acid) (PAM) with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were pre -pared in distilled water PVA/PAM/saponite (PVA/PAM/SPT) nanocomposite films were prepared with various clay contents by using the solution intercalation method. The variations of the dispersion, morphology, and thermo-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites with clay content in the range 0 to 9 wt% were examined. Up to 3 wt% clay loading, the clay particles were homogeneously dispersed in the PVA/PAM blends. However, some agglomerated structures form in the polymer matrix above a clay content of 7 wt%. The thermal stability of the hybrids was increased linearly with increasing the clay loading up to 9 wt%. The maximum strength and modulus were obtained at a clay content of 7 wt%. Thus, the addition of small amounts of clay to the PVA/PAM blends produced PVA/PAM nano-composites with improved the thermo-mechanical properties.

  • In recent years, polymer/clay nanocomposites have generated a great interest, both in industry and in academia, because they often exhibit remarkable improvement in material properties when compared with the virgin polymer or conventional micro and macro-composites. Among these properties are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability and permeability. [1-3] The dispersion of hydrophilic silicates in a hydrophobic matrix like Polyethylene (PE) is difficult because of the difference in character between PE and Montmorillonite (MMT). Therefore, it is necessary to modify PE with polar groups, which can increase the hydrophilicity of PE. In this study, High density polyethylene (HDPE)/$Mg(OH)_2$/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites having a various compositions were prepared by a melt blending technique with an internal mixer and properties namely mechanical, morpology, rheological and thermal properties were investigated

  • Nanoporous materials with nanometer-sized pores, are of great interest in the various applications such as selective adsorbents, heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst supports because of their high porosity, surface area, and size selective adsorption properties. This study is aimed to prepare nanoporous catalytic materials on the basis of two-dimersional clay by pillaring of $SiO_2$ sol particles. $SiO_2$ Pillared Montmorillonite (Si-PILM) was prepared by ion exchanging the interlayer $Ni^{2+}$ ions of clay with $SiO_2$ nano-sized particles of which the surface was modified with nicked polyhydroxy cations sach as $Ni_4(OH)_4^{4+}$. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ particles were formed by the controlled hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Upon pillaring of $Ni^+$-modified $SiO_2$ nano particles between the clay layers, the basal spacing was expanded largely to $45{\AA}$ and the extremely large specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) of $760m^2/g$ was obtained.

  • The special binding mechanism developed provides higher density, lower porosity and higher strengths compared with conventional castables. $\rho$-alumina was employed as a binder materials and nano-sized clay colloidal was added to enhance the drying strength preparing for the alumina vibrated castable. Lower water requirement for casting results in a denser product. The mechanical properties with dimensional stability and corrosion resistance behaviors have been improved by controlling the matrix compositions of the castable. The modulus of rupture and compressive strength after heat treatment at 150$0^{\circ}C$ are 92.34 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 370 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively. The activation energy of mullite formation is 11.47 kcal/mol.

  • Polymer light-emitting diodes(PLEDs) have great potential application in large area flat panel displays and general lighting so intense academic and industrial research, and impressive scientific and technological progress has been achieved in this field. However, the efficiency and stability of PLEDs till need to be improved in order to fully realize the advantages of low cost and ease of fabrication provided by organic materials. Here, we report our effort to enhance the PLED' s performance in two approaches : 1) Utilizing nano-structured materials such as nano particles, clay, nano porous silica in active layer 2) Modifying the device structure in nano scale to improve not only the device efficiency but also its stability.
